2013 BOOK CHALLENGE! Are you in?

Goal 72

#31 The Sanctuary by Ted Dekker

From the book jacket:
Drawn into a terrifying game of life and death----the lives of Renee & Danny are in each other's hands. And the body count will not stop at two.

Ok, so I've been a longtime fan of Ted Dekker, but this book just did not work for me. The characters just didn't seem real. The female was supposed to be OCD but compared to other books I've read with OCD characters, she just seemed scatterbrained, lol. And obviously written from a man's perspective, she didn't seem to have any 'womanly' traits.....
Plot was too 'loose' meaning why are they doing this & how did this happen??
I give this one 0 stars & would not recommend it.

OK, so I don't feel so bad now!:lmao:

He's Briana's husband. She met him at Claire's house in the "present" time. I think he was raised by some rector or something. We knew in the book that he was orphaned but they never really explain what happened. Roger is able to travel back into the past with Briana after they were married and that's a bit of a mystery but this novella sort of explains it.
OH, ok, now I know who he is...LOL!

so book 37 - I wanted a chicklit - fun light read so I grabbed something with 3.75 rating from a goodreads author - first of a series - I don't consider myself a prude but I felt like I was reading porn - so I quit that book. I figure the author will no doubt be someone's favorite romance author so I don't want to offend anyone by giving author/title. It just wasn't my cup of tea.

So book 37 became - Sh*t my dad says by Justin Halpern - very quick, light read - fun - just compilation of quotes and few family stories - made me laugh, I liked it.

Book 38 is Manhunting by Jennifer Cruise. It is about a woman who devises a plan to find mr. right and then falls for someone who isn't exactly what she expected. Predictable but I'm enjoying it - I need light, fun reads lately.

That's disappointing. I've always loved Ted Dekker, especially Thr3e and the Circle Series.

I've finished book #16 out of 50 (and I seriously need to pick up the pace here or I'm not going to make it!!)

To Be Sung Underwater by Tom McNeal

I don't remember HOW this book ended up on my "to read" list, but I didn't really care for it despite all the good reviews it had. Basically, it's about a middle-aged woman who has it all - great career, husband, teenage daughter - but yet can't stop thinking about her first love. If you came across the contact info for your "first love," would you be tempted to call?

The story as I was reading was great and kept me interested, but I just didn't like where the story went and how it played out in the end. I'd give it a 3.5 star rating.

Next up: The Light Between Oceans

I'm about 100 pages in and thoroughly engrossed in the story so far. Can't wait to read more this afternoon! :thumbsup2

Can't wait to hear your take on this. It seems to be well-rated on Amazon yet totally panned on this board.

I finished The Dinner last night (#13). I'm not sure what to think about it. It was well-written and I certainly wanted to see how it ended, but the main character did a lot of "blathering" which was probably part of his character but it got to be too much at times. I'm having issues with a lot of books and I'm finding that I'm doing a lot of skimming. Maybe it's just that I"m too busy to really spend time with books lately?:confused3 It was my son's Prom last night so admittedly I was distracted.

Anyway, it was interesting but at the end I was left trying to figure out what the deal was with the book. The characters certainly did a 180 from the start of the book, or at least my perception of them changed. Odd.

I think I will start The Burgess Boys next.

Book 16 - Alex Cross, Run by James Patterson

Book 17 - The Innocent by David Baldacci

I would recommend both of these books. They were fast reads and enjoyable!

I am now going to read The Storyteller by Jody Picoult. I have been turned off by her books lately, but my aunt read this and said that it was good, so I will try her again. I started Lone Wolf and could not get through the beginning of it... (and the endings of her last few books have really annoyed me too... so we will see!!!)

Goal 100

#58 The Mill Children by Suzanne Marshall-set in England in the 1850's and covers a period of reform of children and their working conditions through three characters who were children when the book starts
#59 My Dear Sophy by Kimberley Truesdale-a prequel to Persuasion and is the love story of Admiral and Mrs Croft when they first met

Finished Shopaholic Takes Manhattan last night. Becky Bloomwood is starting to annoy me. Now I'm going to read Under the Dome before the TV Show starts.

#18 - Wine in My Sippy Cup - light, fast read and pretty funny in parts. It's about a mom of 3 young kids & life as a SAHM. She is struggling with how to keep her marriage interesting and figuring out what makes her happy. I think it was free on Amazon.

48. Hide by Lisa Gardner

From Goodreads: It was a case that haunts Bobby Dodge to this day—the case that nearly killed him and changed his life forever. Now, in an underground chamber on the grounds of an abandoned Massachusetts mental hospital, the gruesome discovery of six mummified corpses resurrects his worst nightmare: the return of a killer he thought dead and buried. There’s no place to run. . . . Bobby’s only lead is wrapped around a dead woman’s neck. Annabelle Granger has been in hiding for as long as she can remember. Her childhood was a blur of new cities and assumed identities. But what—or who—her family was running from, she never knew. Now a body is unearthed from a grave, wearing a necklace bearing Annabelle’s name, and the danger is too close to escape. This time, she’s not going to run. You know he will find you. . . .

The second in the DD Warren series. I liked this one. It had a few possibilities in how it could go and kept you guessing.

Goal - 100 books.
Book #31 - "Lord of the Flies" by William Golding

Well, I really wasn't missing anything by not reading this earlier in my life! I really didn't enjoy it! The basic premise is that a group of British schoolboys are stranded on an island, and what happens to them. As time passes, they become more savage and violent.

The writing was very good, but the subject matter just turned me off! Maybe if I'd read it as a teenager, I would have enjoyed it, but now, as a mother of young children, it rubbed me the wrong way! It also made for some very bizarre dreams!

Next up: The Enchanted April

Goal: 52 books this year.

#32 down and done.

Dear Mr. Darcy - A Retelling of Pride and Prejudice by Amanda Grange is indeed a retelling of P&P, recounted in a series of letters to and from the principals of the Jane Austen original. I'm a huge fan of Austen and I LOVE these prequels, retellings and sequels. I've read several by several different authors and have enjoyed them all.

Note to portia9: I reviewed the previous listing you so generously provided, and I didn't see this author listed. I hope she's new to you and that you enjoy this format.

book 38 Manhunting by Jennifer Cruise

book 39 To the Moon and Back by Jill Mansell
light, cheesy chick lit - she likes him, he likes her neither has nerve to tell the other...ending wrapped up in pretty bow - indeed all the characters in this book end up with fairy tale endings..

Finished Shopaholic Takes Manhattan last night. Becky Bloomwood is starting to annoy me. Now I'm going to read Under the Dome before the TV Show starts.

Just put in a request for that one for the same reason!

I will check it out.

I am currently reading books by Sarah Waldock which I think you might enjoy. I am halfway through the first one of the "Bow Street Mysteries" and as far as I know there are three of them. The main character is Jane Fairfax from Emma. They are:

Death of a Fop
Jane and the Bow St Runner
Jane and the Opera Dancer

They cost me a whopping $1.50 each ;)

19/30 - The Racketeer by John Grisham

Okay, I'm done with Grisham for a while. :crazy2: Talk about having to suspend reality, well this book pushes the envelope for that. I get that it's fiction, but when the author feels the need to include a note at the end saying "research and accuracy weren't deemed a priority" (or something to that effect), that says a lot. :sad2:

1/5 stars (and that's being generous for the parts of the book I actually did like)

Next Up: Confessions of a Shopaholic by Sophie Kinsella

Lisa Gardner is one of my favorite authors. If you like her type of books, you should like Karin Slaughter too.

#32 Freak by Jennifer Hillier

Good book. Sequel to Creep.
Continued the story of Sheila, who had been kidnapped and tortured by an ex lover in the first book, only this time the bad guy was the ex lovers girlfriend. From the back jacket:
Engaging thriller, with the kind of twisted story that makes you a bit queasy even as you can't look away.
