2011 Super Goofs

Re-check at the doc's yesterday. I am making progress, but until I am symptom-free I can't even entertain the idea of running says the doc. I have been told that this is a "chronic condition that will need to be managed" and running may not be part of that management.

Sucks. I have suddenly realized how much I value the structure, effort and accomplishment that running has provided me.

Off to yoga....probably a good thing to det the mind in a better place.

Maura

Oh Maura, don't let his thoughts get you down. Many people find ways to do what they love even when the Dr's disagree. Get a second opinion. Talk to others with the same problem. My BIL had a terrible back problem with numbness in his legs and thought he'd never run again. It took two years, but he's back at it and has completed another marathon also! (And he's in his 50's):)

So it's been awhile since I've posted, been lurking and reading but had nothing to say other than I've been running ok this summer but not nearly as much as last year.

So with that (and a huge motivation problem), I finally signed up for the Hershey Half and......The WDW Marathon in January!!!! :wizard:
This will be my first Disney race of any kind and I'm really excited!

Hope everyone else is finding a way to stay motivated!

Jeanne

Hooray for signing up for those races, Jeanne! I am pretty sure I'll be doing Hershey as well. Hope to see you there!

Hi Goofs! Hope everyone is well and injury free. Maura, hope things are getting better!!! Back from vacation last night and I've been a slug so time to get back into the routine. Looking at fall and winter races and trying to decide what to do. A few friends are heading out to Vegas in December for the Rock and Roll 1/2 where you get to run on the strip! Has anyone done that race before? Stay cool in the summer heat!!!!

Bumping up to the first page! I couldn't find the Goofs!

Hope everyone is running well and often. The heat has hit upstate NY and my runs are slowing down as a result :sad2:

But I know once the fall gets here I'll be able to pick up the pace again.

I ran a fun Women's distance festival 5K this past week and the area's Corporate Challenge 5k a couple of weeks before that. I actually had a PR at the Corporate Challenge 26:39! It was cloudy and a little sprinklely so I think that helped me alot. I was very happy with the result. The Women's distance 5K was a little slower (28:00 even) but that's ok, it was fun and I got a hot pink tech tshirt:cutie:

Hope Maura can give us an update on how shes' doing soon, I know we all miss her!

Where oh where has everyone been?

Just booked my flight for the Goofy Weekend and dinner at Bomas:cool1:

Can't wait!

I had to defer NYC Marathon this year. Got diagnosed with a little thing called breast cancer- looking at major surgery this month but I am going to be fine and crawling my way across the finish line for Goofy- ****s or no ****s!

Still here, just not posting much. Summer is winding down for us. My DD goes back to school in 21 days.

Praying for you in your fight against cancer. I have a friend in Texas going through the same thing and she is doing great and I wish the same for you!!

Oh my goodness, Joann. Good for you for still planning on doing the Goofy Challenge with all you've got going on. I wish you all the best as you kick cancer's butt!

Sorry I've been so quiet lately. I work full-time and have two work-whatever-hours-I-want "fun jobs," which leaves little time to play online. Luckily one of the fun jobs is leading a Galloway Training Program, so at least I"m being pretty diligent about my runs! I'm doing the "time goal" marathon program with Savannah Rock N Roll as our target race. Then I plan to do a couple more "casual" marathons -- no time goal -- to keep my training up between that and the Goofy. If all goes according to plan and there are no injuries, I may achieve the silver level in Marathon Maniacs by doing 6 in 6 months. (All this from the girl who, while training for her first two halfs, said she'd "never" do a full marathon.)

Hi guys. Honestly haven't felt like reading much about running and Disney race prep when I'm not doing any of either.

Joanne Sending positive thoughts your way for beating breast cancer. Good luck with your surgery and hope your treatment plan works well without knocking you too far back. My mom is a 10-year survivor (at age 87). A fighting attitude is definitely what's needed.

I have not run a lick since May and per the doctor shouldn't run til I'm "symptom-free" from my disc issues. But that's not happening so I am going to start running again soon. I feel like if I wait, I'll keep waiting forever and I already feel as though I have lost a great deal of fitness and structure to my life so I'm going to do it.

Hope everyone has been having a good summer. Just got back from a trip to Europe, which was fun---even if I did run into an Adventures by Disney tour group at Neuschwanstein castle!

Maura

Joann Hugs and Strength to you! Keep a stong attitude!!:goodvibes

Maura So glad to see you back here! We've missed your posts! My BIL had to take over 6 months off of running for a similar back issue. He still has some symptoms, numbness in his legs and occassional back flare ups, but he is back to training/running. He started back to running by walking mostly with a few running intervals. He slowly upped the running intervals and decreased the walking. It took a couple of months but he got back into full running. I know you'll get back to it too! Good luck!!!!:thumbsup2

I have a date for a bilateral mastectomy 9/12:scared1: I am hoping to be more streamlined after surgery! Off to do 5 miles with my favorite running partner- Bella Buttercup (the amazing golden retriever)

Hey Goofs! I thought we didn't have a thread anymore, but then found us on the second page...I guess everyone has been as busy as I have! I completed my transition out of the military and made the move with my kids back down to Florida over the summer. Still jobless, but going back to school in the mean time for a career change. Hubby is getting ready to leave us for a year long deployment, so it will be a tough year for us. Kids are back in school now so I'm finally getting back into running and just started my Dopey training this week.

Joanne: Praying for a successful surgery for you. No doubt you'll have the determination to beat this thing!

Maura: Hope the back is holding up and hope your pain is minimal.

What's everyone training for?

Joanne I hope your surgery goes well without any complications. Your attitude seems way better than what mine would be if the same was happening to me.

ShannonHope your schooling goes well and life assumes as much of a "boring routine" as you can manage/expect. Good luck with Dopey training

As for me, after 3-1/2 months I am still not symptom-free. Seems I get really close and then I backslide with stuff happening in my right arm. But enough is enough---I have decided to start running again in September and see where it takes me. I have still not ruled out doing the relay in January. And here's where you can call me crazy: I still entertain thoughts of doing a Boston/New York double next year. Which means I would have to sign up for Boston in mid-September.

Crazy, yes, but I feel like I have given this long enough and I want to run again.

Maura

Maura- my sig means more to be today than when I first posted it.
I am getting really scared as my surgery date approaches. I wish this ugly time were over and I can get on with my life

Hey Suzanne!

Joanne Saying a prayer that your surgery goes well.

I started running again last week. Not sure how this will end up. Still feeling lots of stuff going on in my right arm/neck, but I don't know if it's the running or something else. I WISH I could just ignore it all. Will try to build up mileage slowly--not that I have any endurance at this point!

Through it all, I have still made resort reservations to go down to WDW to do the marathon relay. Juggling two right now. I've really missed the boat on getting any reasonable rate. Would have tried to book a DVC studio by renting points, but everything is full up that weekend. So it's either POP or PO-FQ. Really would like to stay at PO-FQ, but it kills me to pay nearly as much as I have paid for deluxe rooms w/discount in the past. Hoping a room only discount comes out, but it hasn't yet and who know if it will. Seems like Disney has finally realized that they don't have to discount marathon weekend.

Maura

Just a quick drop in- surgery went really well. The best news is no node involvement! I have been out walking a half mile and feel I am getting stronger every day

Joanne Yeah! on the no node involvement. Speedy recovery and positive thoughts to you!

Maura - Keep pluggin along girl! You'll get it back, maybe not the same as before but you will get it back!

Miss reading more posts from the Goofs :( but I'm busy too!
