2011 Disneyland Race Reports

I hope so too! Cars Land should be ready by the Tinkerbell or not until the next DL half?

CarsLand won't be ready until the DL 1/2. But a lot in the front of the park hopefully, might be done in time for Tink. I think I heard somewhere that the Carthay Circle (the huge new structure in the entrance area) should be done really early spring. But the walls around Hollywood might be down before that.

If anyone is interested this weeks Marathon Show is about the Disneyland Half. Here is the link and the description is below. I haven't listened to it, it just popped up in my RSS feed, so I can't comment on the content.

It's the Disneyland Half Marathon as only The Marathon Show can do it. You'll hear about some new products at the expo and we'll visit with many of the fans of the show. We talk with the women's champion and give you some up-close insights about the elite runners and celebrity, Drew Carey. We'll take you out on the course where we race against some spectators, hear a cheerleading squad that doesn't know any cheers, meet a survivor and bring you all the color of this amazing event.

I listened to The Marathon Show yesterday and it was great. I enjoyed hearing about the DL 1/2 as it was the next best thing to actually being there. Joe interviewed VerticalChaos (Beth) on the show too!

I enjoyed the race. On Friday on the way to the expo (a bit tired and cranky) I told myself NEVER again.

After getting the ½ medal and the C2C medal, I had a change of heart. I didn't PR, but I wasn't looking to either. I wanted to enjoy my first time in DY in 20 years. Since the walls should be down next year in DL, I am seriously considering a redo trip. Most certainly with more than 46 hours in Anaheim.

Glad that you had a change of heart and a good race! :goodvibes

I was wondering where you got the holder for your iphone that I saw in your medal picture. It looks like just what I am looking for. Thanks!

It's an Otterbox, Defender Series. You can order them straight from the company, but I got mine for a few bucks cheaper on Amazon.:goodvibes

I enjoyed the race. This was my second time doing the DL 1/2.

I thought getting to the corrals was better this year, but that's because I went to the corrals as soon as they allowed. Last year I got stuck in the crush of people and I wanted to avoid that this year. I do agree that they need better signs and not just people yelling out directions. While I couldn't see the start line, I could at least hear what was going on this year.

I agree that there were less characters this year. I did stop for a few pictures.

My pace was slow through the parks due to stopping for pictures and the crowds. I sped up once we were out of the parks. I was happy with my finish time.

So, I had a good time and I'm looking forward to my first WDW half in January.

Now that I've had a week to reflect on the race, here's how the race went for me:

I lined up in Corral C right around 5:15. I was surprised at how many people were already lined up or at least getting to their corrals. After navigating through the crowds, I was able to make it to my corral in a fair amount of time. For next year, I think I'll start lining up at 5:00. It'll be early but at least I won't have to fight through the crowds and it'll give me enough time to calm my nerves, stretch, eat a Power Bar, etc...

The race started well. In fact, I felt that I went out too fast of a pace for the first 7 miles...but I felt really good! Miles 8-10 were just moving along and not feeling any pain or fatigue but by mile 11, I hit the wall (hard!) and I was in survival mode. During those last couple of miles, I felt my running pace was more like a slow stroll. I definitely did more walking those last couple of miles than I did running. Maybe that's a common thing for these longer distance races but they were tough! Making that last right hand turn from the Paradise Pier for the finishing straight gave me just what I needed! Seeing the large crowds cheering you on and seeing my friends and family doing the same, I got my 2nd wind! I didn't have much of a finishing kick but I definitely wasn't walking either. At the finishline, it was a combination of joy and happiness of completing my 6th DL 1/2 Marathon. While I never thought that I would have done 6 of these races, I was just happy that it was all over!

I agree with others that while running through business parks and boarded up shops is not my cup of tea, Disney probably couldn't do much better in terms of logistics of shutting down more visually-appealing streets all the while affecting traffic. I will certainly let them know that but I don't think they can do much about it. Running through the parks is always a nice perk! Seeing the cast members and characters is always a nice touch. I don't stop for photos but it's nice to see them cheer us on. I would also have liked to see more characters out on the parks...I don't think it'll take too much effort for a CM to don a Goofy costume, would it?

Running through Angel Stadium is another nice treat, too! Seeing myself on the jumbotron (or whatever it's called) is pretty cool to see. Plus, seeing the huge crowds in the stadium gives me yet another boost to keep running!

On that note, seeing the cheerleaders, dance troupes, bands, etc... out there really makes this race unique...especially running through those business parks. It helps pass the time away and forget where I'm running through. So thank you for all of you out there....it was much needed!

Lastly, thanks to all of the voluntears! You guys have a lot to do with dispensing drinks, cleaning up cups, guiding runners to where they should be, etc... In addition, you offer words of encouragement to all of us with a smile on your face! For that, thank you for what you do because for me, it helped out a lot!

So, is this a perfect race? Well, no but close to it but there will be always room for improvement but seeing this race has been in existence for only 6 years and it's gotten this big and organized as it is now, I think they've made huge strides! Will I be back next year? You bet! Since I'm a legacy runner, I want to see how long I can keep this going! Thanks for reading and sorry for the rambling...

Dh and I thought the race was much more subdued than the past years. We avoided the loud music area and headed towards the corrals at 5:00 ish and waited to be let in. Even in the corrals it was really quiet. Actually prefer that instead of having to hear the really loud talkers. (Too early in the morning)
The usual placement of bands, cheerleaders, and our favorites the Boy and Girls Scouts, and 4 H'ers cheering us on.

Final thought: the race was very subdued and a lot of the "Run Disney" staff seemed confused especially for the Kids Race.
