2011 Destashing Thread

Pretty much emptied out my attic yesterday. 1980s Wedding dress, antique portable typewriter from some past relative, antique dishes I had been guilted into taking by MIL when I married DH over 23 yrs ago, old drapes, storage & organizer containers, frames, old knick knacks.......We don't have children, so no one is going to want this stuff.

Just kept stuff like fans, luggage, 1 trunk of our childhood memories, and a trunk of DH's military stuff he needs to turn in when he finally gets out, cat carriers, and empty boxes.

It was getting warm up there, so I'll go back on a rainy day & just finish putting what's left up on the shelves to tidy up.

Love this! What are you doing with the antiques? Selling or donating, and if so, where?

We too have antique (?) old 'heirlooms' (says MIL) and thought we could sell them.... But where? And when? And how much would they really bring in....?

Went through the whole closet. Couple of bags of clothes to goodwill and got rid of some jeans on freecycle. Paper didn't get shredded as scheduled because the shred day was from 10-12 and I had written 10-2 on the calendar.Oops. DH is going to take it to work since it's not a lot and they have a big shredder they don't mind him using.

This morning I went through all of our mugs and got rid of the ones we really do not need and got it down to two small shelves. I put the old mugs in a box to take up to the beach house we share with a bunch of other families. Everyone brings old silverware, dishes, and pots and pans to use rather than spending on new. Let's just say that no one ever has matching plates for dinner.

Yard sale day. Most of the big (as in space) items gone! My stuff is priced to sell. Not looking to get rich. Just get rid of stuff.

Hello everybody. I think I may have joined in the beginning of the year but have been hit or miss with things. Now that I am newly unemployed I thought I would use my time for a major spring cleaning and destash. Hit the ground running today and arranged for a charity pickup this Wednesday and sorted through all the items on the enclosed back porch. It seems to be the room where everything gets dumped. And what was I thinking to collect all these grocery bags Anyway I found several boxes I can use to fill for charity donation and several of those missing umbrellas. Now off to sort through some clothes to fill those boxes/

I am planning on tackling a few things today. 1st is the downstairs pantry and 2nd is the upstairs storage closet.

Made $275 at my 1 day yard sale. Not as much as I see posted here sometimes, but I think more than I've ever made. Not having children, I don't have a lot of the items people come looking for. It usually ends up being kitchen, household, decor, or computer type stuff that I have to sell. Furniture pieces didn't sell, but I will try craigslist for a while more before freecycling them.

It wasn't a huge sale. I've only been cleaing out for about 2 months, and being alone this year, only got to a few rooms & the attic.

Doesn't matter, I ran out of room to set up in the garage anyway. lol

I'm happy with what I made. I price things very low to get rid of them but still make a little.

Will try a few items at my Mom's yard sale as she lives in an area with many vacation homes and household / decor things sell better there. After that, the rest is going to charity.

We too have way too many mugs! Not as many as my mom but too many.

Anyone have ideas for either using them or displaying them? I do have a few house plant cuttings in a couple, but would like to use a few more of them instead of getting rid of them.

Sorry to hear about your unemployment. Good for you for finding ways to use your time & clear stuff out. I'm trying to do a similar clean out before I hopefully start work later this summer.

I took 10 bags of stuff to Goodwill on Friday. We missed out on yard sale day so this stuff has been sitting in the hall for a few weeks. I met a friend over there to give her a book so it was good motivation to take it over. Last night, DD17 & I went through her room & got rid of 4 bags of stuff plus about 6 pairs of shoes. Yeah!

The kids cleaned the basement last weekend so now I just have to organize my stuff. I got a free big cabinet on CL and plan to use it to organize my pics & scrapbook stuff. Hoping to get things looking good this summer. DD's graduation is next year so I really want to get & keep the house looking nice & get some minor repairs done by then.

I declared to my family a couple of months ago that we're going to decrease our stuff by 1/3 and we're working on it.

I've started selling things on CL which rocks - love making money on things we're trying to get rid of. Now this is fun!

I got the pantry done but not the upstairs closet. I mowed the lawn yesterday instead and did some little fix it projects that I had been neglecting.

It is too warm up there today but it is suppossed to cool down a little during the week and I can work on it then.

Add another $50 to my yardsale total. Up to $300 now. (my previous total of $275 was wrong, it was only $250) A buyer contacted me after the yard sale about the vintage typewriter I had listed in my Craigslist yard sale ad and came and bought it today.

Talked to my husband on the other side of the world, and he couldn't believe I got that much for it.

I have a vintage typewriter! It was my grandmas, mayber her moms, so its wayy old. But its just been sitting in our basement so its really dusty, eww. Is there really a market for them? Maybe I should PM you...

This recent article made me dig ours out since it was perfect time to sell. However, ours was in VERY good condition & CLEAN since it had been kept in its closed case. 1920's Portable typewriter

Check ebay for completed auctions on yours & its condition. I might have been able to get more on ebay....or I may not have. I was just happy it was going to some young guy who had been looking for one and was very happy to get it. He seemed to already know all its odd levers and knobs. I didn't.

Great article!! I love old typewriters! I have the one we played with as kids, and it's displayed in our LR. Its from the '20's and it looks very cool, but I've had to explain how it works to my children. They asked where the screen and print button are!!! cute..!

LOL. At the yard sale I put a sign on it stating not to play with it. I saw a few kids looking at it and asked them if they had even ever seen a typewriter.

No typewiter story, other than yes I old enough so we used them in high school. I combined 2 holiday boxes into 1. Didn't get rid of anything though. Found out friends are gonna have a multi friend/family yard sale. Will put the Fenton I no longer want in that and see how it goes...

So...destashing is hard to do with the little ones under foot! I took an extra day off so I would have 4 days to get stuff done and the baby decided that he is going to be ABSOlUTELY MISERABLE and very clingy. DH managed to get quite a bit done in the garage, tossed boxes and condensed stuff, moved holiday decor to the attic. And drop off a bunch of boxes to Goodwill that have been sitting since the fall.
I managed to go through my older DS toys and toss a bag full of junky little things he's collected from bday party gift bags, happy meals, etc. and some things that I don't think work anymore.
I did force myself to go through the box with all of DS preschool artwork and stuff and narrowed it down to a couple of things and the pictures to keep, and tossed everything else. I also cleaned out a crate of stuff DH cleaned out of my car ages ago - I don't know why I let it sit so long, it was all just stuff that needed to be put in closets or cabinets.
Hoping today to tackle some of our "multipurpose" room...lol someone told me that's the term they use for their junk room.

We used to have a tradition of cleaning out the garage over Memorial Day Weekend. Aren't we the fun bunch? It always felt good to get it done and we wouldn't have to think about it the rest of the summer. Well, dh is working today and we have a bbq tomorrow, so not happening this year. Bummer. Oh well, I have a salad and pies to make for bbq tomorrow, but after that, I'm hoping to work on ds1 room and possibly dd room. Hope everyone is enjoying their weekends.
