2010 Tri Thread

oops! Sorry about those details, guys. I'm doing The Austin Triathlon (Olympic distance).

My chiropractor gave me full clearance to swim again this afternoon.

Thanks for the supporting wishes!

Good luck Richard! Glad you got the ok, but try to be careful out there!

Hi gang,
I did my first Century ride today. What a blast EXCEPT, it was in central Florida with a lot of hills. Ugh :)

It was in Sebring, FL and they have 3 days of riding. I just drove up today. Got up at 3 am, way too early to have to get up. Some of my peeps did a 62 mi ride yesterday in addition to the 100 today.

Good rest stops with cold drinks, snack bars and PB&J. Can't ask for anything else. When we finished of course we went for the obligatory 30 min run (in the blazing sun). Oh yea, we then sat in the pool for about 20 minutes. So, does that count as a tri?

So, that's done but I am sure there will be many more before my first full!

Richard, don't forget to give us a race report.

Duane

Oh, Richaaaaarrrddd! Race report, puh-lease!!! popcorn::

Good job on the centure ride, Duane! That's awesome!

Anybody else REALLY ready for cooler temps? I was thrilled to get a good run in on Friday. I did 2.4 miles in 19 min (really good for me) and especially proud because it was 94 degrees out! :scared1:

There is a 10K in Oct I'm thinking about doing - the longest I've ever run was 4.3 miles so that would be a big challenge for me. I'm really thinking if I can improve my run that my tri-time would be soooo much better. That's where I always fall apart.

mgsmom,
I too am so ready for the heat to be over. But, we have another few months left down here.

Once the heat breaks, your runs will be so much better. When we did our short run yesterday it was almost 100% sun. But, just that little bit of shade we found was awesome. You felt invigorated. It makes such a difference. Although it was still over 90, the biking was a bit cooler because of the breeze. Don't know about you but I don't run fast enough to create a breeze :)

And yes, the run is the key to a tri. Luckily I came from a running background (only the last 5 years) so it is a bit easier for me. OK, not easier because it still hurts like heck but I have logged many miles while hurting and fighting through it so I know what it feels like.

Sign up for the 10K! It will be in Oct so it should be down to 92 by then :) Go run, your times are fine. Maybe slow down and go a little farther.

enjoy,
Duane

OK, guys, I am not going to forget a race report...after I have had a chance to sit down and put my thoughts together, at least. Until then here is a race update.

I completed the Austin Olympic Tri in 3:18:31 beating my 3:30:00 goal with little impact from my earlier injuries. The knee and shoulder are both sore today, buit not painfully so.

Duane -Good going on the century ride! :thumbsup2

mgsmom - We had cold this weekend. I thougth I wanted it, bu tdid not like it. didn't help my run either. That may be from doing core class teh day before too, though. ;-) Starting sore is not typically a good thing. :rotfl:

Duane - Awesome job on tha tcentury!!!

RIchard - Huge congrats for the PR adn overcoming those injuries! Glad the hurts aren't too bad!

I have completed my (rather long) race report, with photos. Instead of putting it all here and taking up lots of space, you can find it at my blog by clicking here.

Thanks for all the support!:yay:

Richard - Awesome race! I dream of having a swim like that someday! Too bad you couldn't fully push the bike, but to PR anyway is stellar! Cool that oyu got to wear teh medal. Was wondering about that pic. :-p What do you think of her book? What's teh name? Thanks for the report!

Carrie, until this race that was a dream swim for me as well. I don't know if it was the injury-induced rest, the swimming tips or dumb luck...but I will take it! The book is Calling the Suit by Sheila Taormina, and I'll be happy to review it after I have finished it, but if my initial experience is any indication I think I might become very happy with it.

I do think that not pushing the bike might have been a blessing to save for leg strength for the run. I am going to ponder that one for a while.

She was really cool about the whole medal and placed it over my head for the photo, very similar to when I met gold medal diver Laura Wilkinson last year (who is also in my signature photos with me wearing one of her gold medals). [Yes, I do know how lucky I am to have held and worn two Olympic gold medals!]

Richard - awesome race report! Sounds like you really had a great swim and overall a consistent race - good for you! :yay::yay:

I know we are all waiting for fall to begin so it start to cool off! Went for a run today and did 3.25 miles (taking Duane's advice and stretching it out further instead of worrying so much about speed). Def went well - maintained about a 10 min mile the whole time and that was good. Helped that it was only 91 degrees and I had some sporatic cloud cover. :thumbsup2

Sooooo, anyhoo - the 10K I was looking at in Oct is actually a 15K  Um no. But, there is a 10K on Sept 25th. How much time would I really need to train for that one? I can knock out 3 miles without struggling and 4 miles has been done a few times before. What do you think? :confused3

You're not supposed to increse tiem or distance by more than 10% per week. However, your body is trained to go for a longer time when you think of your tri trianin/experience. I would try either go 4 this weekend, 5 the next and see how the 25th goes, knowing that you may have to slow down or do 5 this weekend, try for 6 next and see from there how you feel. Very short notice, but with your ablity to go 3 or 4 and having endurance for longer, you shoudl be ok. Would slow down your pace to accomodate the distance, though.

Richard - Gee, I think my claim to fame is meeting someone who has touched 2 gold medals. ;)

I have to think meeting me is a low hurdle to reach, but I am available for meets, handshakes and hugs--and a good dessert always gets my attention!:rotfl:

So, in line for the Port-o-Potties at RnR SAT didn't count? ;)

Good to know about the 10% thing - didn't know that. I need to start reading a magazine - maybe a running or tri magazine - that would help me be more knowledgable.
I'll go ahead and run 4 miles on Friday then rest Saturday and try for 5 on Sunday. After that little experiment, I should have a better idea if I should sign on for a 10K or not.
I will slow my pace too - now that I've been running faster all the time, my old pace seems easier. :woohoo: Maybe that will pay off!

Thanks for the advice!

I would not do them only 2 days apart. That seems liek pushing it. how often do you run 3 to 4 miles?
