2010 Tri Thread

Great job everyone!

Just got off my Cruise to Run - Alaska adventure. Spent a lot of quality time with Sarah Reinertsen (and her fiancee Brooke) on the cruise. Seems like she and Mary are kindred sprits... I think it becasue they are of similar statue and have overcome significant issues in thie early lives.

Anyway, she was such an inspiration and a fresh breath of I CAN that I have hit this week with a new sense of purpose. We are actually targeting a coulpe races in same cities over the next year. For those who do not know her story, here is a short u-tube film.

Back to work!:scared1:

Carrie - great job!!! I'm so impressed!!! I'm also impressed with Scott's spirit - what a great guy!!

Coach - that is VERY cool! It would be amazing to spend time with them!

Thanks for all the encouragement, everyone! I do feel good about finishing, especially now that I know I did fracture my foot. My doctor told me I'm a moron for continuing the race. My husband agreed. I told them they were wimps and wouldn't have been able to handle it. I am bummed that I can't do the Aflac Iron Girl Tri later this month - I wanted the stuffed duck they give everyone- but I will survive.

Carrie, great race! I would have walked the hills as well. Oh wait, I did! Tell Steve that he did finish the race and he showed graet character as well.

El&Asmom, good luck on your tri. Remember to not drop your water bottle with your electrolyte drink on the bike. Oh, and get a better night sleep the night before than I did.

Coach, thanks for the link. What an inspiration she is!

Now I get to go meet with my trainer so we can figure out what I can do in a boot. My doctor did give me two boots so I could use one to swim in. Not sure I want to go in the water yet though. ;)

thanks again everyone for your kind and encouraging words!

monsterkitty! :scared1: I can't belieev you did it on a fractured foot! Wow. Not sure tha tI recommend that, but huge kudos for finishing!

Do we have any pictures from everyone's most recent Tris?

Race Report

The Bridgeland Sprint Triathlon proved to be a well run event. The race organizers did a great job putting on a fun event.

The day before the race I attempted to get fully hydrated and consumed water all day, plus 96 ounces of Gatorade G2 as well. I was quite surprised that this did not force me to take additional bathroom breaks during the day or night, which I concluded to mean that I was already dehydrated and needed all this to catch up to where I needed to be. From Saturday morning to Sunday morning I gained about 5 pounds, which I concluded was pretty much the extra fluid my body needed to have that I had been missing. By the end of my race I will feel very happy about going through the extra effort to rehydrate my body.

The 500 meter swim was a point to point lake swim, ending in an area adjacent to the transition area. The water was warm but well marked with big orange and yellow buoys. Given the course layout, many early swimmers swam too the first buoy and then along the aligned buoys, which actually lengthened their swim. I started out far to the left and just swam straight towards to distant yellow buoy that marked a right turn to stay clear of the pack. Unfortunately, I twice got boxed in by swimmers that could not swim a straight line and wasted a bit of time getting away from them (although at one point I slowed a bit to let them clear me and saw them swim their heads into each other in an almost Three Stooges kind of way). For some unknown reason I felt a moment of slight panic during the middle of the race, but calmed myself by remembering that I have done longer swims under worse circumstances just fine. I've never felt that way before during a swim, but am glad I got past it...especially since I was out in the middle of the lake at the time! In the end I finished the 500 meter swim in 12:17.

While the transition are was well laid out, they had to cram some unfortunate people way up in the grass on a hill adjacent to the parking lot used for transition that was way out from the bike entry and exit. I was one of the unlucky that got that area. Still, I had a decent 2:18 T1 time.

I had a pretty strong bike ride, if you go by that I passed so many more people than passed me--and generally the ones that passed me were pretty awesome cyclists with awesome bikes. My average speed of 19.7 mph was right around where I hoped to be, and I think represented pretty much my best effort for the course. I worried a bit that going hard on the bike might negatively impact my run, but I felt I needed to put out my best effort to see how my body would react on the run to somewhat tired legs. I finished my bike ride in 42:37. Unfortunately, the posted race times did not show a record of my bike time (in fact around 1/3 or more racers lacked a bike split) and showed an excessively long T1 time instead, so I calculated my speed based upon my watch split and the 14 mile known distance.

Transition 2 was about as good as it was going to get for me as I had to cart my bike way across the transition area and past the run start, before trekking back to the exit...but I still managed a 1:56 T2 time, so I really should not complain much.

My run was looking to be my biggest question mark going into this race. I have never run the whole course as part of a triathlon before (though I have run all but the aid stations), but I planned to run every step of today's run. The biggest complication today was the early heat, which I expect was in the mid-80's by then and very sunny. Fortunately, once we got past the first half mile there was occasional shade from trees, and most of mile 2 was on a tree-covered path. I covered mile one in 10:08, which I consider to be a solid time for any mile for me in any race, then I covered miles 2 and 3 in a combined 20:30 (I did not see the mile 2 marker.) which surprised me even more. I was definitely pushing a pace that took real effort for me, but I felt good while doing it. As I passed the Mile 3 marker I knew that there was only a half mile to go and I had been running alongside another runner from my age group that I had been determined not to let get away from me, so I pushed the pace for the last bit and with about 150 yards to go I ran all-out. I figured if I was going to get passed, it would not be easy on anyone to do it. I held off my challenger and beat him by 6 seconds, so I have to guess he didn't have what it took to stay with me at the end. My time over the final half mile was an amazing 4:30, for a 35:08 total run time. I held on to a volunteer for support while they took my timing chip and gave me a cold water bottle and an ice-cold, wet towel, before finally walking off to stretch out and meet up with my coach at the finish.

My stated goal for this race was to finish in the low 1:40 range (1:40 to 1:45), but I really hoped to get into the 1:30's. In the end I finished in 1:34:16, which happily beat my goals. More important to me, though, was that I gave a hard effort the whole race, which is what gave me ability to surpass my goals.

Richard- great report. I know what you mean about pushing the bike. It is a sprint and you are supposed to go pretty much all out, but I am always worried about the run :)

Thanks for posting,
Duane

Great race, Richard! Sounds like a huge success! That's awesome that you kept such a good pace on your run! Woo hoo!

Anyone else cranky and mad at the world because they can't train because of a stupid injury?

I need an attitude adjustment!

That's not me currently but i have advice. Channel the energy and work on parts of the body you can ... BUT ... also understand that you MUST allow time and energy for the body to heal. It will require a lot if energy to mend your bone. So work on things that so not load across the injured joint. You cannot do squats but you can do extensions and curls. If you club has an arm cycle grow to love it. When I was working through a stress fracture in 06 I would challenge friend to hand cycle races since we had two side by side. Work on the upper body, work on core. Go swimming BUT only with a pull buoy - NO KICKING.

Lots you can do just put your thinking cap on.

Richard - COngratulations onyou're race!!! That's awesome!!!!!

Monsterkitty - Charles has good advice. Hang in there!

I have been slacking, big time! Just a crazy week since our race, crazy weekend adn finally getting caught up. Wen to a 12.2 bike time trial Tuesday and was very pleased with my time! WIll swim tonight. SIgning up for an almost olympic on teh 22nd (swim is 500 m short wth?). That shoudl help keep me going. jst cant take this heat (and I know it's worse elsewhere) Ugh. Oh, adn I have a 5K Saturday. HS CC alumni run. Going to do what I can and wear my 70.3 visor to ward off my former coach telling me how fat and slow I am. Going there because the boy's coach is also retiring and he's a great guy that I'd liek to say goodbye to.

Forgot to tell you. At one point, downhill in my 70.3, my garmin very brefly flashed 56 mph. It was just after lapping, but the numerbs were there. :p I did have one mile over 24 mph. :scared1:

Awww! Hang in there and try to be patient! It is SO important that you let it heal - listen to the good Coach Charles!

That shoudl help keep me going. jst cant take this heat (and I know it's worse elsewhere) Ugh. :

I hear you about the heat - I have been putting off all kinds of running! Last time I ran was Monday and it took me almost 25 min to bang out 2 miles. Normally, that was good but recently I have been able to keep a 10 min pace. It was soooooo hot and muggy. Like the air is actually hard to breathe, you know?

OH, I was so disappointed the other day. I was looking at some races in the area, really looking for a 10K to do in October (working on that run!) and I saw a Ramblin' Rose in a couple of weeks just about 30 miles from here! I went to sign up (what they heck?) and it was closed. :headache:

Oh well. I'll just keep on runnin' (and saving up for a new bike:yay:)

I'm getting antsy! Lot's of training but no races until a sprint on Oct 3.

Even though I am "only" doing a HIM in November, most of the team I am training with are doing a full IM in November. So ,I am pretty much following their plan so I can train with them.

That means an 80 mi bike ride tomorrow - YOW! The last 65 mi ride I did(with bridge repeats) killed me. Of course we also have a 30 minute run right afterward. It will only be 93 and sunny at that time. Ugh.

So, I might die, but I'll be ready for the HIM.....

Just had one of those useless birthdays yesterday. It was a great day but I got a year older but didn't get the benefit of going up an age group :)

Have a great weekend!

Duane

Ack, the Danskin tri is this weekend! I'm really not nervous as I think I'm prepared enough to finish strong (strong, but not fast!), although I have a feeling the last mile or so of the run is going to be painful! The weather is supposed to be beautiful, high of 94. Although, with a 6:45 am start, I'm not sure it will feel all that warm next to the lake :)

The only thing I'm wondering about is the waves, I think there's over 4700 people registered. I feel like at my tiny super sprint (300 people), we went 1 min apart in groups of about 50. I have a feeling the waves this weekend will be like 200! We'll see what they say at the expo on Saturday.

I'm going for a swim tonight just to get stretched out and then go to the expo and bike racking tomorrow. I'll be back with a race report ASAP on Sunday!

Happy birthday Duane.

Good luck at the Danskin Tri on Sun bekkiz. I have mine at Pleasant Prairie next weekend. I'm stressed too about the swim. I'm having a hard time imagining that many people swimming around me. I just want to get through the swim and move on. After I get through the water it will all be good.
Have fun!

Any advise on tapering? My sprint is a week from tomorrow. This week I had one day where I ran 3.5m and swam 0.5, a 18m bike ride, a day of swimming for about 40m, and a brick today of 10m bike, and 2.5m run. I took 3 days off where I normally work out 6d a week at longer distances than I did this week.

What should I do this week? Some of the plans I saw just recommended working out 3-4 days with one day of each sport for about 15-20m each day with a day off before race day.

Any recommendations? This is my first event, and the idea of tapering is new to me.
