2010 Tri Thread

What are your thoughts on Garmins for the race? I have a bike mount and my velcro wristband. Advantages: knowing where I am on the bike course, being able to correct my speed on the run (mainly slowing down at the beginning). Disadvantages: one other thing to deal with, might get discouraged about pace and push too hard. I'm undecided. I have a regular watch with a lap function so I can have a basic idea of times. I know I'm being silly- it's just a sprint!:rolleyes1

Jen,
Not silly at all! I would always prefer to know more information about where I am and how I am doing, so I will generally have my Garmin with we on the bike and run....and I don't think there's such a thing as "just" a sprint.

mgsmom Glad you got your groove back!
Jen Great job on doing a mini-tri! My race is at the end of June, so I figure I'll start doing a similar regimen as the date gets closer. Right now I am feeling confident about each individual leg, but put them all together and I am not so sure!

It's so interesting learning about everyone's training regimens. It's very inspiring :) Especially because I have no real plan

Anyway, two new things:
1) I bought a new bike last night, I can't wait to get out and ride (probably tomorrow night). It's a Specialized Sirrus, so nothing fancy, but it should be much faster than my old cruiser. And I got a new, matching, helmet. I'm so cool :rotfl: or just really dorky.

2) I think I'm going to sign up for a super sprint (.25/9/1.5) on June 19th. I'm already good on the swim and bike distances, although I still have a lot of work to do on the "run." I'm still only doing a 1 minute run/2 minute walk interval for about 1.5 miles and I'd really like to do better than that. This particular race is geared for the first timer and it will be nice to have some practice with the transitions before the Danskin in August.

mgsmom - Glad your last run was better! SOunds liek you were pretty dehydrated on the bad run. If you get thristy, you should already have been taking in more fluids. Be careful with that. FYI, one reason I do tri's is that theya re better fro em in the heat. I couol off greatly in the swim adn stay fairly cool on teh bike. So, it's kind of a head start before the run. (At least that's what I tell myself. ;) ) You will eb fine!

Jen - Great job on the practice. You will eb awesome!!

Maura - We're thinking of doing Island Lake Saturday of Memorial Day Weekend. It's a sprint. You up for it Ms. Amateur Athlete who's really more like a pro? :goodvibes I want to have a sprint in before I do an Oly end of June. Oh, I know you're not that far, but I have my parents house less than 10 min away for the weekend. (they'll be camping) So, if you want ot make Saturday morning easier, just let me know. We checked out he beach Saturday adn it's sand. I don't get that too often for tri's. Woo hoo!

Duane - Great pic! COngrats!

Bekkiz - COngrats on teh bike!

OMG, now I've done it. Heaven help me. I have bike shoes and bike pedals are on order. :scared1: I really hope I don't kill myself. DH keeps telling me how much he likes them for hills, though adn our training route these days is super hilly. On teh total DIva side of things......, I'm getting Speedplay Light Action Cromoly in PINK! I'm *almost* embarrassed. I am used to teelling people to suck it up and get what color whatever is best for you is. Seriously, this is the pedal I would have gotten. just a huge bonus that it's pink. :upsidedow

Oh, someone was asking who's trianing for what. I am training for a HIM July 31.

Do we want a list of who's doing what races in teh first post?

Carrie,

I may not be around that day--depends on whether DD ends up going to Nationals. Her chances are slipping, so I may be home. But if she doesn't go, I am trying to talk her into a trip to Disney!

If I'm around, I might consider it. I have a friend who may be doing that one as well-she has done the series, just not sure if she is doing that one.

Maura

Maura - SO my chances are slim. :( We just signed up anyway. I'm suer seeing us just doesn't compare to going to WDW, though. :rotfl:

Jen - I forgot to reply to your comment about my confidence. While I am feeling much better about my personal trianing and abilities, I'm also quite sure I will DLF my Oly. While I am much faster in teh swim than last year, last year I got a PR in teh swim, but was DLF in teh sprint swim adn most, if not all, of teh Oly swimmers passed me. :guilty: I DLF'd the sprint, not just the swim. OK, so I sepnt the rest of the race feeling sorry for myself and could have done better. However, small races have stiff competition. I'm not at that level. As long as they don't tell me there's a time limit, though, I'm gonna suck it up and see how I do. Not sure what my point was, but it struck me funny when you noted my confidence. But that's all I can really measure by is my personal success, even when I DLF. I'm sure you will do great in your tri!

Thanks everyone for your encouragement. In between bursts of panic over last minute work/kids/packing details, I thought "hey, this is going to be fun!" Kind of wish I'd ridden my bike more or done more bricks, but too late now. ;) I think my plan is to get through the swim, have fun on the bike, and try to catch people on the run. I'm really not that concerned about my time, but I am going to take the Garmin. Odds are I'll mess it up, but in theory it would be nice to know where I am and fun to look at later.

Carrie- you made me laugh. I've been DLF twice. I decided if I was going to be at the very end, I might as well be DLF and get the cheers! Good luck with your pedals- I took mine off for the sprint, but am going to try again soon. I'm kind of jealous of your pink pedals... I had no idea mine were so boring!

Good luck Jen! I'll look forward to reading your race report!
I am on vacation next week - California to visit family and go to Disneyland - I am just going to cherish the rest week and not beat myself up for taking some time off. I've got to the end of June to be race-ready!

Jen Hope your race goes (went?) well. Look forward to your report.

Did 34 miles on the bike with DH today. Is there a bed nearby to nap on? Every time I think I'm in good shape, I quickly learn that I am not as good as I think I am! The route did have hills-including one nasty one with 8% grade (so DH says). I huffed and puffed up, shifting gears and attempting not to fall over and DH just rides on up like la-di-da.

Oh well, I earned my dessert today!

Maura

Jen - a little late but I use my Garmin. I just slap it on my wrist and go. I really don't watch the time, just the pace with the bike and running. Actually I always forget to turn it off so I never have an accurate time. I am not one to give advice on starting out fast. I did it today and was beat by 200 meters. I had to side stroke twice just to catch my breath. I don't have a bike rack either, just take off the front wheel and stick it in the back seat. Hope we hear about your race soon.

Bekkiz - I always wanted the Specialized Sirrus. It is a sweet bike. And let's go with you are cool looking, not dorky :)

Carrie - PINK pedals? You can't be serious (Duane says as she is zipping by him on the bike with pink pedals) HIM in July - that ought to be a blast!

Maura - I hate that when I am in a small gear huffing up a hill, just fast enough so I don't tip over, and here comes someone blasting by me.

Had a sprint this morning. This was my second in 2 weeks (other was a pool swim). But, they were both within 15-20 mins from my house and were cheap. You have to support the local races here as there aren't too many.

Swim was opposite of the last OWS. This time instead of "not being able to swim" I went out way too fast. Once I did that I was totally wiped out by 200 meters. I had to side stroke twice just to catch my breath. But, I still came out of the water much closer to the front of the pack than the back of the pack.

Nice ride, a little windy though. Funny how you never feel the wind when you are running. It was hot. Overall a lot of fun. I did get 3rd in my AG. And this time there were more than 3 people in my age group :)

Next up a reverse sprint on June 6.

enjoy all,
Duane

A reverse sprint sounds like fun! Get that run out of the way, right?

That is just the hardest thing for me is being able to master that run at the end. Which is funny, because when I'm not getting ready for this sprint-tri, I run three days a week! :confused3

Well, kids, I survived!

Turtle Crawl Sprint Triathlon:

First, I had to get up at 3:30 a.m. to pick up a friend and drive an hour to Jekyll Island. Very Disneyish, except I had to be reasonably alert since I couldn't hop on a bus!

Uneventful drive. We found the place with no problems (probably because for once I was really early!) Picked up our race stuff and handled transition relatively well. I would much rather do it the day before, but I still managed to get all my stickers and numbers in the right places. They had a tri-tat system- you put temporary tattoos on for your numbers. Great in theory, but took too long. Being the needy type that I am, I grabbed a volunteer to help me with mine. We both messed up, so I had tattoos and regular Sharpie markings. ;) Tons of people reversed their numbers, scratched them out, and wrote them in marker, which I found amusing.

What I did not find amusing?? They had already lengthened the bike to 14.4 miles because of construction, and then they added 50 yards to the swim for 650 total. (Thankfully, I wasn't doing the Olympic!)

The swim:

So you might have gathered that I was nervous about the swim... we walked for an eternity down the beach. A bunch of people from our class were together, sharing the apprehension. Our coach told us to get in the water. It was really windy and there was a strong current. He said it would be hard to get to the first buoy, but then the current would drag us in to the finish. (You went out to a buoy, hung a left and went straight until turning for the finish). It was a timed start. We entered in pairs within a couple of seconds of other people.

Getting to the first buoy was sooo hard. I heard some people screaming for help behind me. I was conveniently breast stroking (also known as treading water) because I'd swallowed a ton of salt water already, so I could see the lifeguard on her surfboard- she was paddling over and yelling something like "I can't get there yet." This did not encourage me...:rolleyes1 The current kept shifting- I didn't know that at the time, I just knew that my coach was a big, fat liar! ;) I did a lot of freestyle once I calmed down and changed up my stroke to deal with the fact that I was breathing on the side with the waves. It still took forever to reach the buoys. I was swum over a couple of times and a guy knocked one side of my goggles- nothing like some salt in the contacts! Anyway, after about 30 minutes of sheer terror, I was finally out of the water. (Our coach later said it was the most challenging open water swim he'd done in 15 years).

The bike:

It's a long way to transition, up a boardwalk and through sand. I was fine with that, cause I was out of the water! I put on my shoes without socks, grabbed my helmet, and headed to the mounting area. I got going without any real problems. Now here's the thing with my bike- I've ridden a lot on a trainer, and I've ridden a lot slowly outside. So I had no idea how fast I should be going. I was averaging about 17-19 mph (I did take my Garmin). I passed a bunch of people (cause if I didn't make it clear, after the swim, pretty much everyone was in front of me). I realized I was at about mile 4 and about to pass a guy with 20 on his leg. And I thought to myself, perhaps I'm not much stronger than a 20 year old boy and I should stick with him... So that's what I did. (I eventually passed the 20 year old at the end of the run, which really pleased me. :rolleyes1) The bike was great, except for the last 3 miles in a headwind. But again, I wasn't in the ocean, so I was happy.

The run:

Dumped the bike and helmet. Grabbed the hat and race belt. Drank some water, since I'm still too nervous to grab my bottle on the bike. Couldn't think of anything else to do, so I started the run. Here was my happiest moment- even though I only did one brick in training, the run felt fine. Legs weren't heavy (so should I have pushed more on the bike after all?) The course was a mess because of more construction. It was an out and back, so I saw some people from my class both ways which was a nice distraction. My Garmin said the course was a little short and that I averaged about an 8:17 (hard to tell since I was not the best at turning it on/off at just the right spots). I was extremely pleased that I wasn't running much slower than just a regular 5k without all that near drowning and biking stuff first! I saw our coach before the finish- he yelled about a final kick. Miracle of miracles, I was able to pull out a little sprint to the finish. I never can do that!

So that was it. They had lots of food and goodies afterwards. We sat around a bit and cheered for people and talked about the race (mostly sharing swim horror stories). Got a sweet t-shirt. The official results have me at 1:51:xx and 4th in my AG. I'm dying to see the splits so I can tell just how horrible I am at swimming!

There's another sprint tri in October at the same place. The swim is only 400 yards. I'm torn between never, ever wanting to see the ocean again and wanting to redeem myself. In the meantime, there may be a local duathlon in August- now that I can work with!

Here I am with my friend at the finish. I'm the Goofy one in the pink hat.

Awesome race Jen! Good job on the swim. I like how they start you in pairs. I have only done a race when they start a larger group together. That would be nice. Either way, I'm with you the swim is still my toughest. But you made it!

Pretty fast 5k times too. I am usually 45 sec slower (per mile) than a normal 5k.

You know you need to do this one again. You need to beat that OWS!

Thanks for writing the report,
Duane

Just for Duane.... :upsidedow

SpeedplayLightActionTitaniumPink.jpg

Duane - Don't worry. I can't see myself passing you! :lmao: A reverse sprint? Not for me! Dh and I were jsut discussin the possiblity of drowning if we went into the water tired fform the swim and teh bike. Does seem like it'd be fun to change it up otherwise, though!

Jen - Way to go! OMG, what an awful swim! WHile Lake MI can be scary, at least there's no salt. Justthink how easy a "normal" OWS will be from now on! Holy cow on teh bike and the run! That's great!!!

Maura - Way to go on the bike ride! I was passed going uphill in my lowest gear yesterday. I can comisserate.

Did an 8-mile run adn a 15-mile bike this weekend. It's a rest week. Yay!

Jen Congrats on your great race. Thew swim sounds awful. I wonder if it's always like that--mine was windy/choppy, too. I guess I have to do another so that I can compare! Great run time. And I agree, it's hard to figure out how much to push on the bike. I guess that comes with experience--which, again, means I have to do another one!

Carrie Pretty pedals!

Followed my ride on Saturday with a seemingly glacially slow 9 miles yesterday. Well, at least I didn't cut it short!

just when it starts heating up in central TX, I've made the decision to run. I guess it seems that sanity comes in small amounts around these parts.

I'm finishing up my cycling spring series and I'm a bit worn out. I am really looking forward to running again, despite the heat/humidity.

Last year I sold the truck and got a small car. Somehow I forgot in the equation how to get the kayak from point A to point B. After our tax return, I shopped around online and did some research. I'm very happy with the rack system we got.

Went out to the venue with the kayak and they had the buoys set up. My son and I unloaded the kayak and got down to the water. Went in and paddled around...it's different. Beach entry both start and finish.

I observed 2 swimmers and I just don't get it. I'm of the mind that with OWS comes responsibility. Swimming without a spotter/kayak is just plain reckless...or is it just me?

The water was not too cold and I'll be in the water for the first time this Wed. My main focus is to ramp up my pace running and get my legs under me.

Jen - what a great race report! That swim would have totally freaked me out too - I'm SO proud of you for doing it! Wow! Sounds like you really kicked some booty on the bike and run! Your run time is really fast! My goal is to run a 10 min mile - I'm pretty sloooooowwwwww.

You said you use your Garmin? Several of you guys have actually mentioned that. Do you just strap on the portable kind you use in your car - or is there one specifically for a bike? DH has one he uses in the Jeep and I'm tempted to use it on the bike just to see my pace. I'm hoping to keep about a 16-18mph pace for the race - that seems reasonable I think. Anyway, I would like to be able to keep up with that.

My neighbor actually has a wristwatch kind of thing he bought that has a Garmin and heart rate monitor (among other things) on it. It's pretty cool - maybe a future purchase - I don't have $200 to throw around right now.
