2010 Tri Thread

BigEeyore The outside of the knee pain may be ITband. It can't hurt to work on stretching for that, or using a foam roller(the torture weapon of choice!) I have used the following web site for many strengthening/stretching exercises.

http://www.exrx.net/Exercise.html

And at that same site, here's a link to inof on ITB.

http://www.exrx.net/Kinesiology/Inflexibilities.html#anchor13320380

As for tape, KT tape comes recommended. I actually used it at the marathon in January for IT band issues and quad strain and I believe it helped. They have instructions and videos on how to tape various aches/pains.

http://kttape.com/

And the thing with knee issues, which msgmom pointed out, is that the way to deal with knees is to strengthen whatever is weak around it. Example, I have a weaker hip that contributes to my IT issue on one side. So I do abductor strengthening, and also work on my quads, glutes, etc--strenghtening and stretching.

I am a tri athlete. OK, a sprint triathlon and a very slow one at that but I did finish and didn't finish last. Actually I placed 3rd in my age group (OK there were only 3 of us). This was a sprint which included a .75km swim, 20K bike and 5k run. It was held in Clermont Florida which is the hilliest place in the state. We don’t train on hills because we don’t have any, unless it is a highway overpass.

I arrived early so I could get a good place to park. Besides, I wasn't sleeping much anyway. Set up in transition, pretty easy based on all I read and just scouting around. They did have assigned spots and I was at the end of a row - the outside end but it did make it easier for me. And face it, time was not an issue for this race.

The swim which set the tone for the rest of the day. I borrowed a sleeveless wetsuit because the water was 67 degrees. I don’t go into water less than 80 on a normal basis. It was brutally cold to say the least. Started off from shore and had to swim out, across, and then back to the beach. Up to now my only real swimming experience was in a pool. Open water swimming is a little (a lot) different. Not sure if it was because it was so cold, the water was dark, the waves were a little rough, or I was just excited/panicked, but I just couldn’t swim. I can easily cover the distance in a pool without any problems. I just couldn’t get my head down to swim. I'd get water in my mouth, and cough. It was terrible. The realization that I had to go all that way with a side stroke was daunting.

When I got to the first buoy to turn I was dead. I was still only 1/3 of the way but I would have stopped if I could have. I actually grabbed the large buoy but it didn’t hold me up so I continued on. I wasn't alone. In my wave I was actually 18 from the back. Shows how many newbie's there were. Anyway, I did calm down enough to swim a good part of the last 3rd.

As I was running up someone yelled to me - it was the wetsuit strippers! Yea! Just lay down and they take care of the rest. OK, not what you are thinking. These are people that help you take off your wetsuit. I didn’t think a race this size would have them but it was cool. It was quite a ways to the transition and I did kind of take my time. Did I say I was beat? I took a few extra seconds to wipe my feet and to actually change my jersey as it was a bit chilly and I thought having a dry one on would help.

Off on the bike to an immediate steep uphill. Not long but 30ft after that was another short straight up hill. Nice way to get acclimated! It was a very nice course mainly around the lake. There were a couple of really tough uphill sections that killed me. Did I say I was tired? I even lost my water bottle and turned around to get it. I had just bought it the day before, I was not going to lose it! Overall a fun course although I did spend a considerable amount of time up out of the saddle in first or second gear. That was new to me.

Next transition was of course quicker. Put on some shoes and my number belt an off we go. It was a 5k out and back. The Olympic distance people had to do it twice. I had practiced a bit getting off the bike and running some short bricks and it seemed to have paid off because I could run from the start. I didn't have the yucky feeling in my legs. I ended up with negative splits in the run so that is good.

One of the nice things about this was that the Olympic distance folks started before us but they had a longer bike ride. Did the same course as us but had an extra road or 2 they had to go down. This mixed it up a bit. There was always someone on the road with you. I'd be grinding it out going up a hill and here comes a $7k bike with disk wheels flying by. Let's me know how fast you can go on a bike :). But even the run, since they started earlier than the Sprint group, most of us ended up running at the same time so you didn't feel alone at the back.

My only real disappointment was in the swim. I don’t care that I am slow it was that I couldn’t swim. Never expected that. It just threw me so far off that it took most of the swim course to recover. Then of course I used up my legs doing the side stroke. But my first one is done. Already have another in June, I am sure more on the way. After another sprint or 2 I will do an Olympic or 2 then looking for half Ironman next year. Then, who knows. I'd love to do a full, but will wait until after the half is in the book :) Heck I could even swim .75k. Did I mention that I was tired?

Enjoy,
Duane

Duane Congratulations! I know what you mean about the open water swim. It's choppy, you can't see anything and you just want it to be done. Sounds like you enjoyed yourself, which is great. Good luck on the next one.

As for me....my second wetsuit came and while it is not dramatically larger than the first, it is more comfortable. So size charts be damned, I am sticking with this Medium. Now just need to send the other one back.

Another day in the pool today. Enough said! (My swimming seems to be going downhill)

I'm just jumping to say Hi! I'm a pretty new Triathlete- did my 2nd race yesterday. I'm sticking with Sprints until I get my swimming better (and my confidence level up).
Looking forward to "talking" with y'all.

Bigeeyore: a few years back I had a sharp pain in my knee area. My wife, a nurse, asked around and got me in to see a sports orthopedist. When I went in and described him what was going on, he knew exactly what it was. My point being: if you want it done right, see a professional. This is not something to mess with. Just my take.

Duanerice: good for you for sticking it through. With multi-sport, there are multiple things that CAN and will go wrong. You did it. Cool!

Sk8ingmom: $850 for a road bike? That's a steal. Personally, I am a Spesh man, but all the bike companies are competitive against one another. They are ALL trying to get your business. Some do better at road, some better at tri, some better at mountain. Some do it all. My cheapest bike was $750. But I use that one the most. So it's all relative.

Good job, Duane!
I enjoyed reading your report - and am impressed that you survived the open-water swim!!!!

Congratulations Duane!

How do you guys fit the training in? I remember training for the duathlon and trying to swim one day a week was hard to get it all in last year. Any tips or tricks?

Good work, Duane! Open water swimming is tough to get used to, but you will get used to it. That sounds like an outstanding forst tri experience.

and Mel, it can be tough to fit training into a busy schedule, but helps if you can make it a regular part of your day.

Great job Duane! I know what you mean about being able to cover the distance in the pool and not in open water. That was my experience in my first tri last June, it's so disappointing to train and not be able to use it on race day.

Mel - it does get harder to fit it all in - especially when you get closer to the race and your workouts are so much LONGER. I workout 4 days a week all the time, so I just change those 4 workouts to help prepare me for the sprint tri. Last time, I didn't spend enough time training the run, so that's what I'm going to focus on more of this time. So, of the 4 days I will swim one day (30-45 min) and take a 1-hour spin class another day. The two leftover days will be devoted to running. I'm running about 3 miles per day right now. When I get comfortable with 5 miles, I'm going to start doing something else first. Like, swim for 30 min and THEN run the 5 miles.
I think this will keep 2 of my workouts in a relatively normal time frame and I really only have to make adjustment (time-wise) on the other two.
Probably a couple weeks before the tri, I will do a few workouts that sequence all three activities just to get a feel for it.
I'm lucky that my hubby is very supportive and will do whatever he needs to take up my "slack" with the extra time. He ran the WDW marathon several years ago.

This is only my second sprint-tri, so take everything I say with a grain of salt! ;)

nov02mom - WELCOME! I just found this thread recently too, and am doing my first tri this summer. I did an indoor tri last year, and it got me hooked!

Duane - Congratulations! :cool1: I loved your race report, though you have officially scared me about the swim! My event is in a lake, along the shore, so I am hoping it won't be too bad.

Chimera - I get up before 5 am four days a week to get my work-out in. It was brutal at first, but your body gets used to it and it is the only way I can be sure I get my exercise done for the day. Once kids get up and the day begins, too many things can keep you from doing it!

Everyone - thank you for your thoughts and ideas about the knee issue. I have hope now that I can run again after years of assuming I never would! I am going to try the exercises, the KT tape, and working on my running technique.

BigEeyore - You may want to read ChiRunning if you want to work on your runnign technique. Hope you find somethign that helps!

Mel - Last year we did 2 bikes during the week, one wass followed by a short run (10 to 15 min). Then, we did one swim. Had a 2nd on our schedule, but I don't think it ever happened. Saturday, we did a LR like we were training for a half. We did throw in 1 30-miler bike ona Sunday adn probably turned a couple of the short LRs into bricks. That got us to an olympic. I can try to get out the schedule if you want. Scott did a great job of combinig a few different schedules. I so WISH The Penguin made a tri bnook. Most of the schedules aree so intimidating. Even my Ironman friend and her Ironman Dh are telling us that less is more. now, less for them is huge for us, but not as much as so many schedules say.

Duane - Congratulations!!! You are a triathlete!!! Way to go!! I grew up near a lake and train in a fairly choppy lake. (First year I didn't have an indoor pool option) It's a HUGE difference. At Chicago last year, I saw so many people jump in the water and do just what you did. I just knew that the yhad trainined in a pool and Lake Michigan had them freaked out. In Chicago, for the sprint, there is a rope along the seawall that you can use the whole time. i can't tell you how many poeple I saw do it, but it was a lot. My dh can't breathe when he does freestyle (that one reason we ar ein a swim clinic). he has raced 2 years wwith only side stroke. Huge congrats on hanginign in there. That had to be tough. Way to go for not giving up!!!!!

Maura - Yay for having a suit that fits!

Duane-

Congrats!! Your race report was great!

I share your swimming pain. I had a very similar experience in my first and to date only tri. Totally could cover the distance in the pool (and then some), but for a multitude of reasons was reduced to a sort of breast stroke/side stroke/dog paddle thing for almost all of the race. It was like I'd never been in the pool. I'm calling it a major lesson learned and hopefully can do better next time. :rolleyes1

My tri class is tonight. I'll report tomorrow if anything interesting happens or if I learn any good tips-

Jen in GA

Yep Jen, that was it exacty. I can't wait to get back in the open water. Too cold right now though :)

Ok, I've been secretly trying to figure this out - but I give up - I'm an idiot.
What's a brick?
:confused3

My simple explanation....

A bric is a bike, then run session. So you do your time on the bike, then do a short (maybe only 10 minutes or so) run. The idea is to get the feel of your legs after the bike portion of the tri-- see what it's like to run right after all that biking.

Maura

Same goes for swim then hop on the bike. Although the bike to run is much tougher. First few times my legs felt like jelly!

Like Maura said, for most of us we only need about 10 minutes just to get the legs used to the turnover. Some plans call for longer bricks but I'm not there yet.

enjoy,
Duane

And, when you do a bike to run brick, it's what your legs feel like when you start running. :rotfl: Never worry about asking questions. most of us here are still fairly new and did not know a lot of this stuff not too long ago.

Ah! Thanks for the clarification!!! I guess I can quit calling them combos now and I will sound much cooler! :goodvibes

Ordered a Dolfin Uglies 2-piece today - have no idea if it'll be lapswim worthy - we'll see! If it works in the pool, I'll just put a sports bra over it for the bike/run. :yay:
