Wow, thanks for sharing your experience. That is amazing. Sounds like Disney really did their best to keep people happy. I would nearly bet that some of those who were there still complained that they didn't do enough. I don't want a hurricane to ever happen, because it can be a lot more devestating than what you described, but I can see what you mean about it giving you that time off you needed.

actually, there were a *ton* of people on these boards who were complaining shortly thereafter... i just refused to be one of them... we found the fun in the experience, and appreciated what help disney did offer... i am sure there were plenty of hotels, vacation home owners, etc that did *nothing* for their guests, leaving them to fend for themselves... imo disney handled it in a truly "disney" fashion

as far as devastation, i totally know it, unfortunately, first hand... we live on the east end of long island and have experienced some bad hurricanes at home, plus my brother in florida also experienced a lot of hurricane damage over the last ten years...

DH was expressing some concern last night about travelling in August. I dont really know much about hurrican season, but from what I can see on the interwebs, August-September seems to be peak time? But, if this is how it was handled, I really don't see it being that bad! Yes, 4 of us in a hotel room for 24 hours might get a little punchy.. but if we have to "suffer" locked up together like that - what better place than AKL? LOL.. perhaps we'll see some flying livestock a-la Twister? (i know... terrible thought.. but the visual was just too funny.... "Debris! Antelope!")

actually, for a resort like AKL you will most likely not be confined to your room... because of the indoor corridors, you will be able to roam the resort (inside)... other guests at AKL, WL, CR, etc reported other hurricane experiences, including impromptu buffets, characters, movies in lobbies, etc throughout the entire ordeal...

Hopefully only 1 more week until DVisa can book FD!!!

do you know something the rest of us don't? i have not heard that rumor at all... last year DVisa discount was only offered a few days prior to gen'l public, not a full week... for all we know, it might be 5/3 for DVisa cardholders and later in the week for the GP... of course, that is just another guess!

Thank you for sharing your story. Its nice to know Disney does things to try and help when a hurricane has come through. I think its nice they had food at a cheaper price, rooms after the hurricane at a cheaper rate for those how can stay and tickets that don't expire for the days lost in the park. Very nice.

Im sure it was scary looking at the hurricane as it passed though.(Ive never been in a hurricane) What do you pack now, incase there is a hurricane while you are there and are stuck in your room for a long time? I wonder if Disney would give free internet if you were on lock down?

it certainly had its scary moments... we were on the top floor of pop century, so the noise was deafening at one point when the wind was really whipping...

as far as what to pack... nothing that you don't normally pack, although maybe a deck of cards or two (my kids had played in the arcade earlier in the day, before the room-lock-in, and won one of those 12 in 1 game sets w/chess/checkers/backgammon/etc etc etc and it came in mighty handy... so maybe a new inexpensive board game (disney related of course!), just in case... it would also come in handy if someone gets ill and you're confined to quarters...

don't know about free internet... it would be a nice perk, but i would not expect it...

Great Hurricane story, is good to know how efficently Disney handled it, gives me peace of mind if one should by chance hit when we are ever there.

Indeed, a great story. As a Norther, I avoid Florida during those smokin' hot & humid months. Just can't take it. But should I ever visit during hurricane season, it's good to know that Disney has their ducks in a row if another storm draws a bead on the place...

Yet another Rochesterian here. We booked our flight on Airtran back on March 9th, and got 3 tickets for roundtrip ROC to MCO for $594.30. We are going August 13th thru August 28th, and we picked our seats already. I know that is a good price , but if I see it drop any lower I will still call for a credit. I have heard that you can use the credit for baggage fees . Have either of you ever done this at the Rochester airport before?

Just wanted to say hi from a fellow Rochesterian! I've been playing with dates - still have nothing set in stone - and airfare out of ROC is going as low as $175 up to $225 for us depending on the days. Of course, on Airtran.

About a month ago I had it down to $145, but we're not sure exactly when we're going yet.

sure, i love talking restaurants... even more than i love talking hurricanes

we've got a 2yo who eats like a 12yo... so, we're going for whispering canyon (skillet), 'ohana, possibly HDDR, and garden grill... see the theme? all family style (less work than a buffet!)! LOL!

We are doing Le Cellier, Beaches and Cream and 50's PTC as our repeat restaurants. Then we have Wave, Coral Reef, Plaza, Yak and Yeti, Tusker House and Ohana for the first time. All ADRs are in place, except B&C, which is a bit of a crap shoot for free dining, being they don't take ADRs. We have Boatwrights as a backup ADR, just in case we can't get into B&C.

No, and honestly, I didn't even know you could call and get any sort of credit if the price of your flights dropped!! Thanks for the tip!!

I've already told DW and the kids that they'd better plan on packing LIGHT! One decent size carry-on and a backpack each. If I absolutely have to, I'll do a single checked bag for the excess. Plus, if we do end up with a checked bag, we'll bring the twin size aerobed so the girls don't have to sleep in the same bed. It's funny, though. I never complain about the small beds at Disney, but DW does....am I missing something?????

We're from Rochester too!!! (Hilton to be exact!) We're headed down from Aug 20 - 29th. We are also booked on Airtran - I booked us at $89 a way (direct flights - necessary with a 7 and 2 year old!) Last time I looked they had flights on those date for $76 for certain flights. Good luck!
