2007 International Food & Wine Festival (Marketplace Booth Details Now Available!)

I am excitedly waiting, this is going to be more of an adult trip than our previous ones. (Okay, its the Mommy likes wine and is going to try it all trip. Well all in moderation, I have 8 days to do it in.)

I just sent the following email to wdw.guest.communications@disneyworld.com.

If anyone knows a better address to send this message to, do let me know. If others write in as well, then perhaps someone "higher up" will start to pay attention, and F&W bookings will be handled better next year)

Hi!

I wonder if you are aware of how poorly the Epcot Food and Wine Festival is being managed--especially this year. Reservations begin on August 6th at 7am for events at this festival, yet the schedule still has not been announced. When I called (again) at the beginning of this week, I was told that's because "celebrities are hard to pin down". True enough--and that might explain why the Party for the Senses is not yet finalized (though the celebs for the much-later-in-the-year Candlelight procession are!)

But most of the events--like vertical tastings and food and wine pairings involve no celebrities. Nor does the schedule of wineries who will be around offering free tastings on any given week. So I suspect the reason has nothing to do with celebs, but with incompetent management. Many people are pretty worked up about this. You may want to check out the multiple online threads about this surprising and un-Disney-like development.

On a personal note: my husband, daughter, and I attend the Food and Wine Festival every year, traveling from Syracuse, New York (husband and I) and from San Diego (daughter). We spend thousands of dollars not only on wine and merchandise at the festival, but also on fine dining around WDW. But we cannot book our air travel/hotels/dining reservations until we see the F&W events schedule, for we plan our trip around what tastings (especially the verticals and food and wine pairings) we want to book.

As it's now so late, and booking air/hotel/dining is becoming more difficult by the day, we've just begun to discuss not going this year. If attendees as devoted as we are are considering this option, then I'm guessing others are too. It's a shame for Disney to lose business because F&W management cannot release a schedule of events more than two weeks ahead of the August 6th booking date.

The way this is currently being handled is a tarnish on Disney's sterling reputation as a well-run organization. Just thought you might want to know.

Great letter woolfcross. Not going this year :sad1: or I would join you in writing a letter as well. DW and I have attended several F&WFs in the past, and I always recall having at least some information early in July. Of course, I remember booking ressies as early as just after July 4th as well.

Am I dating myself?

Planning to go back again next year -- for DD's first time ever! Will have to figure out how Mommy and I can sneak away for a Signature Dinner one night (hoping to convince Grandma to join us -- built-in babysitter!). Looking forward to seeing this year's itinerary as I will assume that next year will be pretty much the same and will book our plans accordingly.

Good luck to all getting the ressies you want -- and please post review/pictures when you get back!!!! :thumbsup2

Great letter, very well done!

I just found this thread and am so glad I am not the only one who is frustrated. Since it is just me and I already have my hotel and airfare planned, I can deal with having just the weekend to figure out which events I want to do. But it is so hard to get ADRs for regular reservations now (since the DDP came into existent), that is what I'm stressed over. The number of TS meals I plan and the days I plan them for depend on how many events I am able to sign up for and when they are scheduled. They really should take that into consideration.

And I really feel for all of you who have to wait for the event schedule to even book hotel and airfare!

Seems like plain old incompetence to me--and thus very "un-Disney". Disney is usually so good at making trip planning around events easy. Unlike some of you who know exactly when you're going and are just curious (can't say I blame you), we wait to book air travel, hotels, etc. until we see the schedule and select what we most want to do.

The official line that I got when I called at the beginning of this week was that "celebrities are difficult to pin down". True enough. That might explain why the Party for the Senses isn't up, but the vertical tastings, and wine and food pairings, and list of wineries that will be around on any given day should have been announced LONG ago--for few (or no) celebrities are involved in those.

My memory may be a bit foggy, but I don't recall prior years being that different from this year in terms of when info is released relative to the booking date. Granted, this year the booking date is 6 days later than it was last year. The "Official" list is when the disneyworld.com website gets updated or when the event schedule got mailed out (I understand this year there will be no snail mailing). "Unofficial" lists squeaked out a bit in advance of that (perhaps a week or two, tops) and were by no means comprehensive.

Even when the lists are released, information is by no means complete. I expect to see event names, some sort of brief description, dates offered, and prices. Here's what levels of description I recall being available for last year's festival at time of official listing/when ressies opened.

Party For the Senses: shortlist mentioned above. NO specific guest chefs mentioned (although I was able to sort out a few a month or so prior to festival start by directly asking some chefs who mentioned to me they were doing the Epcot festival again; educated guesses may also be made by seeing which chefs are booked for other events)

Food and Wine Pairings: shortlist mentioned above. No specific menus or vinters mentioned in advance. "Themes" are tied in with hosting restaurants.

Cook, Book, Bottle: Shortlist mentioned above. Chefs already booked were listed, although several dates showed TBD at time reservations opened. Nothing's set in stone. Chefs are subject to change.

Chef's Afield: pretty much same sort of info as aforementioned CBB.

Odyssey Kitchen Conversations: Shortlist mentioned above. I can't remember if any specific chefs were listed when reservations first opened or if it was simply described as "Food Network personalities". It may have just been the Deen brothers (who ended up bowing out due to birth of a child) and Cat Cora listed initially. Oddly enough, by the time the festival opened, the official festival booklet no longer even mentioned Food Network as the source for the guest chefs.

Odyssey Cooking Schools: Shortlist mentioned above, plus themes. Some of the listings may have had guest chefs listed as well; I can't remember.

Sweet Sundays: Shortlist mentioned above, plus some guest chefs listed.

Exquisite Evenings: Shortlist mentioned above, all themes listed, plus some guest chefs listed.

Regional Feasts: Shortlist mentioned above, plus themes listed.

Signature Dinners: Shortlist mentioned above, plus hosting restaurant, plus theme.

Wine Schools: Shortlist mentioned above, plus themes listed. I can't remember if wineries/instructors were mentioned as well.

Vertical Wine Tastings: Shortlist mentioned above, plus specific wines.

Whew!

I'll admit I get quite anxious this time of year, too, and can't wait for info to be released. I approach it by booking my trip dates and then deciding which of the scheduled events I want to attend.

Waiting is so very frustrating. Thank you to the dis'ser keeping an eye and ear out for this info. I appreciate it. I am planning a ladies only long weekend to F&W Fest. and I am the "cruise" director, so any info is appreciated!

WOW! It's nice to see that it's not just my husband and I waiting around for this info. We already have our dates and some ADR's but it would be nice to know what else we are doing.

Just another person waiting for info. I've got all our ADRs made. Just thinking I'll cancel if I have to. I think this waiting is ridiculous!

Perhaps the poster who works as a Disney concierge could pass the word along to the powers that be that whoever is in charge of F&W is not up to Disney standards? Or get us the name of someone in management so WE can register our difficulties/complaints with the way this is currently handled? For I'm betting that it can be done a lot better--and that someone at Disney would like to know and correct this.

I think Party for the Senses is the one thing you can count on for scheduling...it's always been on Saturday nights, except for the odd one on a Friday that was moved because they needed the venue for something else apparently. This would only make a difference if you're planning around the chefs that might be involved, but why couldn't they release with a TBD?

And well, Sweet Sundays wouldn't make sense on a Tuesday, either. ;)
I tend to agree that the repeat events have usually stayed true to their
prior year's schedules.

Even when they've had a chef named for an event, at least twice the chef
has changed on me. So even that isn't a guarantee.

That sounds like you were in the middle of the event and they suddenly morphed into someone else.

I watch too much Star Trek.

Thanks for the kind words, Mermaid Mom. But I can't help thinking that if everyone who's posting here would email the exact same message to wdw.guest.communications@disneyworld.com (or another link if you have one), then our concerns might actually be addressed.

Doesn't have to be an essay (I'm a writer, so rambling on at boring length comes naturally to me)--just what you're saying on this board--i.e. "I'm frustrated", "Where's the schedule?", "Why is it later this year than ever before?" etc. When communicating with corporate structures, it's not WHAT you say that makes them change policy, it's how MANY are saying it!

Improv Gal--perhaps I've missed something. I went back and looked "above" and didn't see any "shortlist" of vertical tastings or food/wine pairings. Can you direct me to what it is you're looking at? (if no dates or specific varietals/vintners mentioned, then not helpful to us).

My piece of (unsolicited) advice: don't be frustrated--be pro-active! Email Disney to let them know you think the schedule should be released before August 3rd--and that since it's not rocket science, this isn't asking a lot.

Sorry, I personally don't think it's a big enough deal to write a letter. It doesn't really screw up my scheduling.

It's pretty ridiculous though.

Then of course you shouldn't! Others who have posted on this board, however, seem to have the same difficulties we do--and sound pretty frustrated. I agree that writing a letter is a pain in the neck (even I'm not worked up enough for that), but an email is as easy as posting to this board.

Why talk to each other--why preach to the choir--when we can talk to Disney with a couple of sentences and a push of the "send" button?

Sorry for the ambiguity. The "shortlist" referred to my line, "I expect to see event names, some sort of brief description, dates offered, and prices."

The only events for which I recall specific varietals/vinters being announced by the onsale date were the Vertical Tastings and perhaps the wine schools as well. It's usually a safe bet that if the vinter is there for either of those two events in a weekend, that vinter is probably doing the corresponding Party For the Senses as well.

I know how frustrating it can be when trying to plan a trip. I ended up with a last minute trip reschedule myself this year thanks to the Star Wars Weekends shuffle.
