2007-2008 cheer parent thread

My girls used to take dance with a studio, and I'd spend $$$ fo classes and lessons and the recital (no competitions).

Then older dd dropped dance when she made the high school cheerleading team, and I thought I'd be getting some financial relief. :rotfl: But no....the school pays for the uniforms, but I had ot buy all the warm up gear, buy cookie dough and magazines and n ad in the journal (fundraisers) and pay for the travel costs to the competitin in WDW. And then she asked if she could take private tumbling lessons at the all star gym that choreographs the school team's routine.... (Ditto with younger dd, she drpped studio dance when she made the high school dance team...and I got to spend my moeny in new and interesting ways...)

Thank you for the update on the cheerleader. What a tragic thing to happen to such a young woman.

My poor dd...tried out today for the college team and didn't make it.

There are two colleges she's considering. Yesterday she told me she'd choose this school, not the other one, if she made the team here. The eother school has tryouts in two weeks. Now I don't know which school she wants to attend, Cheerleading is so very important to her.

undrcovermom..............so sorry to hear about your DD.

That is a fear my DD has..............accepting admission to a college and then not making the cheering team. She is looking at schools with good cheer teams (sometimes I think even before academics!!).

Do college teams hold tryouts after the deadline to make your decision to go to that school? If so, that is terrible!!!!

I wish your DD the best!!!

Undercovermom - So sorry to hear about your daughter's tryouts.

Rbuzzotta - We are counting on you to be our eyes and ears at Worlds. :goodvibes

We had our send-off for our J5 team yesterday. Everybody is so excited and the changes they made to their routine are fantastic! Hope everybody does well. Good luck to Stephanie and her team :cheer2:

goofy.........I will try to be your eyes and ears for Worlds!! I will bring my laptop but am seriously getting nervous about not getting into the Milkhouse due to overcrowding!!!

They do have a live webcast (it will be about 1 hr behind schedule so not quite 'live'). I think you can order it on usasf.net (not sure).

We leave friday...............

I just so your thread and was disturbed. I am a friend of the family and also at the event. Your post is completely inaccurate in so many ways. :sad1: I didn't know to cry or be angry when I read this post so I did a little of both prior to writing to you.

Please, we are all still mourning her passing and having a hard time. Especially us friends who were at the event and have known her for a long time. We just want these "rumors" to go to rest and move forward. We want to see change in the teachings of cheerleading. Safety should be the first concern.

 I am so sorry for your loss

When you are ready and it is appropriate, would you please share the accurate information?

The only way to dispel rumors is for the truth to be out there. Otherwise, rumors will persist, as many parents are also concerned about their children.

Thank you so much. And again, our prayers go out to the family, her teammates, her gym and all her friends. :grouphug:

we were at the event and it was very disturbing. I hope the family is able to find peace. I saw some pictures and Lauren was a beautiful girl and appears to have been a wonderful person. (from the messages I saw). I hope it wasn't my post that was so upsetting. I just posted what I knew from our own eyes and what was being said at the event. I hope the full truth comes out and we can all learn from this. I would like to see paramedics stationed next to the performance floor with full ACLS equipment.

ABC News is reporting:

According to the death certificate, Chang's death occurred when she was "accidentally kicked in the chest during a cheerleading competition."

Specifically, the certificate states that she died of complications from a condition known as bilateral pneumothoraces -- in which the lining of both lungs swells, decreasing the ability of the lungs to take in air.

Which is consistent with the e-mail from the gym owner about the lung collapse that the pp posted.

I hope the family finds peace, but also finds the strength to educate. Another article said it took the response team 5 minutes to get there. That is way too long. It is such a dangerous sport, I agree the paramedics should be stationed at the mat. Heck, even in my kid's peewee football league, there is always an ambulance stationed at the edge of the field. It should be the same for cheerleading.

CFcheermom,

Everyone has this young lady and her family in our thoughts and prayers. My daughter has joined the facebook group in prayer for this young lady. A total tragedy.

As for what the owner did or did not do, I will not pass any judgement. The fact is clear, a young lady with so much to live for died!!! Cheering is a dangerous sport and I preach to my child that progression is the key to keeping her safe in this sport. Her coaches preach that as well.

Do you think the owner of the gym was trying to downplay it a little for the sake of the flyer who kicked her?? She must feel awful!! I am not looking to make excuses for any cover up but that just came to mind.

On this sad note, we are now packing for Worlds!!!!!! How exciting!!! Stephanie has really been pushing (not tooo hard) herself so that what she is able to do now she will hit this weekend. No running tumbling. She tried but just can't push it. The ankle is still swollen and the MD said yesterday that she bruised her bone quite a bit as well as shredded some tendons. He said with going back to practicing it will take longer to heal. She needs some time off!!! Starting Monday!! LOL!!

Good luck at Worlds!!!!!

I apologize if the info I posted on Lauren's death was inaccurate. I only posted what I knew at the time. Please post the accurate information when time allows. Like the other poster said, the only way to dispell rumors is to get the right info out there.

Just found and finished reading this thread yesterday.

Congratulations! Quite the honor to earn a bid to worlds. Tell her to be careful on that ankle and good luck!

I will have to hang out here occasionally and see what is happening in the cheer world. DD just aged out and has decided not to continue in college. The college she committed to does not compete and she thinks it would be too boring.

Yay! I finally got my vids from jamfest up on Youtube. They are private though so if you want to see drop me an email. We had a tumbling collision day 2 but still ended up in first....yippee!!!

Everyone wish my dd good luck. Today is her first stunting private. Pray for her to not get embarrassed (that is her fear), and that she does well and doesn't shut down (a biggie for her). She knows if she doesn't fly then she will be on the same team next year. Her tumbling is better, but still not up to par with the next Level. At least she could fly. She wants it so badly, but is scared to "do bad" as she says. Tryouts are next week.
