2007-2008 cheer parent thread

I really hope the Special Needs team that got a fully paid bid at Cheersport (KE I beleive) competes at the Milkhouse!!! I want to see them again!!!

Last I heard, Kentucky Elite will be there. They are such an inspiration, I do hope they are still planning on going. Also, congrats on Stephanie's continued progress.

Undercovermom - good luck to your daughter on her tryouts!

Tnkrbell - Thanks :flower3:

Fltwinmom - glad you enjoyed the video. Good luck on your new coaching career!

Good luck to all at Worlds. Our small Junior 5 team will be there. I don't envy you and the crowds, but I do wish we were going down to see all the wonderful teams!

I guess we must be one of the only gyms where existing cheerleaders don't have to try out. If we sign our contract before try outs they don't need to go to try outs. They evaluate all the kids during the last few practices.

Wow Brenda, I thought all teams held tryouts. Even though there are tryouts, kids are moved from team to team throughout the summer. They get to practice together and see how different groups work it out. I am sure the coaches already know who will be on what team, but they leave it open as they don't know who will walk through the door!!

What type of contract do you sign?? We only sign a form that states we are aware of the gym rules (attendance, attitude etc) and will abide by them or can be asked to leave.

I really hope that cheerleading becomes more standardized beginning next season!! I think if it becomes standardized, then it will be viewed more as a sport. There are so many different National competitions with so many different judging techniques that is makes one crazy!! What works for one comp is totally wrong for another.

Worlds is going to be CRAZY!!! I will bring my laptop with me just in case I can not get into the Milkhouse due to crowds and will have to watch it on the live webcast!!! Trust me, I won't be happy but at least I can watch it!!
I am just afraid that those teams that go on in the morning may hang around the Milkhouse to watch the LG SR and LG Unlimited COEd teams!! The place is small enough and I know Disney will not be a lenient with crowded aisles as some of our local comps!!

Our tryouts are happening this week, but are run much the same as above. Everybody, including the veterans have to try out.

The cheerleaders will be put into "groups" after tryouts that will practice together for the summer. There will be movement amongst groups as the coaches watch and see how things jell.

The actual teams won't be announced until August.

Nope, our existing cheerleaders don't have to attend try-outs if they sign their contract. What happens is after the regular try-outs (new kids) they place all the kids on teams. They have their work days during the summer and some kids get moved but for the most part the kids usually end up where they are originally placed. We have final team placements at the end of August.

Our contract is lengthy...about 14 pages maybe! It spells out everything and we have to sign our life away LOL! Pretty much the contract helps keep away those kids that might walk out mid-season b/c if you leave mid-season you are still obligated to pay for the rest of the season.

LOL..our try-out packet/contract is also about 14 pages.

However, everybody must still tryout. It also spells out everything, - ie: there will be 3 re-evaluations during the summer where cheerleaders can be moved (although they can really be moved anytime), dress requirements, the all important pages of fees, including a huge penalty fee if they withdraw before August, the philosophies of the gym, when you can breath (only kidding) although it is such a huge commitment for these athletes that sometimes you do think that they have to schedule time to breath, etc. I have 3 kids in club sports and I have to say, the commitment that cheerleaders put into their sport is one of the highest of anything we have experienced!

We signed that we will abide by the rules and pay the fee's on time!!! Stephanie's team has an issue with attendance!! I think they have only had a few full team practices. She was telling me that there have been remarks made regarding 'next' year and attendance etc. She thinks they will be much stricter!! Some of the kids travel up to 2 hours to get to the gym!! I love the gym and coaches, they are so easy to communicate with and so positive but the attendance thing does bother me. Even when Stephanie could not participate because of her ankle, I still drove her to every practice!!! She sat and watched!!

As we near the end of the 2007-2008 season.............I wish all those cheer princesses and princes the very best. May your off season be filled with high hopes and dreams for the next season. May you all continue to love the sport and reach for the stars!!!!:cheer2:

Today is signups for next season. I have 2 girls that cheer. We are using the same uniforms as last year thank goodness. New cheerleaders without last years uniforms have to pay 410 bucks per kid for all the gear. :scared1: I don't know if that is high compared to other parts of the country but that is a big chunk of change all at once. We only do one big competition and the rest is just cheer at the local football games.

On another note my oldest daughter went to a concert in Arizona last weekend and the local radio station was having a dance contest to meet the band. My daughter did her cheer routine from last season and won the contest and got to meet the band. So I guess I am getting my money's worth LOL.

Our fee is $625.00 this year. That includes the registration fee, a brand new uniform for this upcoming season, spankies, practice tanks, 2 pairs shoes (practice and competition), makeup and bow.

New cheerleaders have an additional fee of $135 for warm-ups and backpack.

Our monthly fees range from $250 per month for the mini & tiny 1's to $340 for the level 5's. This includes tuition, team fees and nationals fees. Does not include travel expenses for the out-of-state competitions. This is the season's fees broken down in 12 month payments. If you pay the year's fees in full at the beginning of the season, you get a small discount.

Our attendance policy is extremely strict.

100% attendance is required unless you are really sick. The coaches are pretty compassionate though, so valid reasons they usually approve. Weddings, funerals, things you can't control are usually approved. But your parents had better not schedule a vacation during competition season!! Vacations are approved during June & July and during scheduled gym breakds during the year. But in the summer, if you are in town, regular 100% attendance rules apply.

They do have medical masks in the gym, so you are required to come even when you have a slight cold. You may not do much, but you have to be there. Cold and flu season is always funny to look down on the practices and see these kids doing their routines when you can only see their eyes. They wear them if they are sneezing or coughing so as not to get the whole team sick.

We have absence request forms, so if you have a wedding, etc, you have to ask for it off. They run it pretty much like an office environment. Days off have to be asked for and approved. However, just like your coaches, our coaches are so wonderful and the kids love it so much there, that the coaches usually have more of a problem keeping the really, really sick ones out.

We also have kids driving (and their parents) from all over. They must really want to be part of the program! :goodvibes

We are having a huge send-off party for our Junior 5 team on Sunday before they head out to Orlando. The excitement is so palatable!

Good luck to all competing and pixiedust: to all trying out in the next few weeks.

And :grouphug: to all the parents that they survive it all! :goodvibes

was anyone at the mass minuteman challenge last weekend? A poor girl had her trachea crushed while flying. She was apparently without o2 for 4 minutes. All the kids were so upset. I looked and looked online to find a news report and cannot find anything.

Wow! I didn't hear about this. We had one team there and our individuals. What level and team was it? It must have happened later in the day because I haven't heard anything about it.

I believe she passed away on Tuesday. The info I have so far is that she was from Energized Athletics out of Watertown, MA and was hit during a level 6 basket toss.

Below is an email I just got from one of our gym owners:

I just got a call from a woman who has been talking to the owner of Energy (they are like family) so the information I have is accurate. What happened was two weeks prior to this comp she had a fall and was hit in the chest and did not feel well and did nothing about it. At the comp this weekend she was on the mat (no one hit her) and she said I cannot breath and collapsed. She died of 2 collapsed lungs. The media is all over this and I feel just horrible for Kim (Energy cheer owner) she is trying to mourn and they just won't leave her alone. It was a tragic accident and it is unfortunate and we all know because it was during cheerleading the media will make it something it is not. The girl was 20 yrs old and a coach at the gym as well for many years. The family of the girl is very upset as you can well imagine. They speak very little English and will not have a wake or funeral (it is their culture); However the media is hounding them.
My prayers are with them all.

If at the comp this weekend you hear anything false please let them know the truth. I would hate for false claims to be made this weekend against Energy cheer.

This is horrific news. My heart goes out to the family and gym owners as well as the young girls teammates and students.

My former gym had an accident in which a young girl died and I can tell you that I have never felt a loss of words as I did at that time. My heart went out to the girls family and the coaches at the gym who were with the young girl when she died. The coaches and gym owners handled it very well and helped anyone that needed it. It was an awful situation and one you would hope would never happen again in a lifetime!!

This is just so sad. May God bless everyone and may he watch over all the cheerleaders, coaches and gym owners in that they may never have to hear or bear witness to this type of accident again!!

Thank you for this update. My girls were there and they all heard that her trachea was crushed doing a basket. Everyone was so scared and frankly many of the parents were re-evaluating the safety of many stunts. Although it is still a tragedy . . . that really words cannot express, at least it was not a fault in the safety of the event. It did feel like it took a long time for emt's to respond, but who can say. It was a weird event, multiple girls were injured and another had a severe asthma attack.

My thoughts and prayers go out to this poor family.

Ok I won't complain. I am just thinking about coming up with the money for next year while being the working taxed to death family we are. We make a good living but that would just be too much for us for 2 girls. Sounds like a huge financial output but hey if they enjoy it and you can do it then woohoo.

I am also sorry to hear about that cheerleaders death.
