I won a contest at work (Best Buy, Appliances, in case anyone wants to know about Dyson vacuums and front load laundry). We will be in LA for 5 days with Best Buy and then we will have a couple of days. We would like to go to DisLand. Is there anyone who can give us advice on where to stay. Do we use the points and stay at the parks or will we be better off not staying on property.
Thanks

Congratulations!

We have stayed @ the Grand Californian twice (once on points). We have stayed at the Disneyland Hotel twice (once on points). If you have the points it is a good use of points since DVC had lowered the points needed to stay @ the DLH and GCH. Paradise Pier is just too far away. The Lilo and Stitch Breakfast is our favorite though. They have a bananas foster french toast that is to die for.

Our favorite resort is the Grand Californian. The closeness to California Adventure is worth every penny.

If you need some help PM me and I can guide you in the right direction.

WOW, that is amazing!! You can't beat a trip to California!!! We've never been to Disneyland, so I can't help you there, but HAVE FUN!!!

Cindy - those photos are AWESOME!!! I am SO in for a trip to Hilton Head in the summer of 2008!!! Sign me up!!!

I do have questions on appliances. Since I am now renting a house, I need to acquire a washer/dryer. Is Energy star or HE or Front Loading really going to save me money? or Do I just go get something used?

It's too bad we don't have a firm moving date Cheryl b/c I'm virutally positive our new house will come with a washer and dryer and I'm definitely not leaving NY without my new set even if I have to drag it to FL myself! :lmao:

We looked into the whole Energy Star HE difference and for us it was the water consumption that was going to save us the most money (as opposed to electricity) because our water costs us a lot. You might be better off just looking around at Craigslist or something like that to get a good quality used set cheap.

The story tellers breakfast with Koda at GCH is really cool.

Not too bad! We have tried all the character breakfasts in DL and our favorite is still Lilo and Stitch. I'm telling you the French Toast is a must have! We flew to DL last year for DH's Birthday and Lilo and Stitch was his birthday breakfast request. I think he and I ate pretty much just the French Toast!;)

We stayed at the Disneyland Hotel and used points. You can use points at the Grand Californian and Paradise Pier. We really enjoyed our stay at Disneyland Hotel and would like to try the Grand Californian. The off site hotels (known as the Good Neighbor Hotels) are very convienient to the parks. Actually some of them are closer to the parks than the Disney Hotels. Our friends stayed at one of them and said it was pretty decent, especially for the price. Check out the Disneyland forums on the DIS, there's a ton of info.

Also, if you pm me your address I will send you the Birnbaum's book that Mary sent to me when I was planning my trip. It's a 2005 edition, but there is alot of useful info in there.

Congrats on winning the contest - that's pretty neat!

Great pictures Cindy - I like the picture of you and Cameron kayaking. My boat would be going in circles :rotfl2: Loved the bunker they built so you could have some peace and quiet!

Cheryl,
I got the package today. THANK YOU SO MUCH! I love all the papers! I would also suggest craigslist but I don't know if it's as popular in FL as it is here. My daughter says in Daytona it's not used very much.

Cindy,
Great pictures of your HH trip. Thanks for sharing, it looks like a relaxing place to go and as for gravel one lane mountainous roads YIKES :scared1: I just can't do them either. I can be a passenger but not the driver, I feel like I will drive right off and get vertigo and everything! Glad you made it safely.

To all my jewish friends on DIS,
Happy Passover! We had a lovely seder with family from Israel. My daughter, Michelle, couldn't make it home for the holiday and didn't have a seder to go to so she did the best she could in her dorm room (bought eggs, canned matzah ball soup, matzah, gefilte fish, grape juice :rotfl2: because she's not 21 and couldn't buy the wine! etc.) and then we put on our computer camera and tuned her into our seder...it was the next best thing to having her with us and kinda fun.

We have stayed at all three onsite hotels at Disneyland. Grand Californian is by far my favorite, but we really loved the Disneyland Hotel as well.

Our favorite character breakfast is at Goofy's kitchen in the Disneyland Hotel. Widest selection of food and best character interaction. At least for us back in December 2005 when we went to all 3.

Disneyland is smaller than the Magic Kingdom at WDW, but that makes it cozier too (IMHO). California Adventure is fun especially if you like thrill rides.

Congrats Amanda on the prize. Enjoy your trip!

Great pictures Cindy. We just got our confirmation for our stay at Hilton Head in October. It is only for one night on the way home, but we've always wanted to see the resort.

Did you talk to Cameron already? pirate:

We had a slight problem. Going out, we paddled into the wind and the guide said on the way back it would be much easier as we'd have the wind at our backs and the tide was going out. So, we turn around and just about as soon as we did, Cameron & I headed into the oyster beds. Everyone else was going along their merry way, yet here we were stuck in the oysters. No matter how we tried, we couldn't get out of them and continued to go sideways. We were in hysterics laughing so hard. :lmao: We'd get out of the oysters (which are really, really sharp & bumpy) and then we'd head over to the opposite side of the creek, still in the wrong direction from everyone else. :lmao:

I thought the guide would come and help us navigate back into the group, but he just kept going along, saying it was a good thing we were laughing about it. :confused3 Cameron later said to me he didn't thing the guide could help us anyway as he couldn't have gotten out of his own kayak with all the oysters around.

My theory is that we got caught up in a current going the other direction that all the other kayaks missed. That's my story and I'm sticking to it! :rolleyes1

And, Cameron was so mad at me at the beginning of the trip. He really wanted to have his own kayak and we were going to let him, until the guide asked if Cameron had every kayaked before - to which Cameron answered yes he had and I said I was the one who never kayaked before. The guide wouldn't let me go out in a single kayak as they can tip rather easily whereas a double can't tip because of the stabalizers. So, even though Cameron could have gone out in the single, the guide wouldn't let me go out in the single, so Cameron was stuck with me as then the guide wouldn't let me take Walker because I had never kayaked before. It turned out okay in the end because Cameron later agreed that it would have been tough out there by himself. I just kept reminding him of what fun he would have missed out on if he hadn't been stuck with dear old Mom! :rotfl:

Mary, when you go in October, are you staying in a studio? I've read that some of the views from the Lodge are really nice. We never stay in the lodge because we like the single buildings and from my understanding, most of the studios and one bedrooms are located in the lodge (lockoffs?), while the 2 bedrooms are mostly located in the single buildings. IIRC, there are only 5 studios & one bedrooms located in the single buildings (all lockoffs), underneath the grand villas. The remaining of them are located in the main Lodge building.

All this talk about DL wants me to plan a trip out West! :cheer2:

We booked a one bedroom for HH in October. We already had a one bedroom booked at Boardwalk that we were cancelling. We figure we should get to Hilton Head sometime mid-afternoon so we'll have some time to look around. Won't be staying very late in the morning as we'll be up and early on the road to NC to go see some race shops. :car:

Great pictures Cindy! Makes me want to go and stay there sometime soon.

I've stayed at 2 of the hotels on DL property and at one of the good neighbor hotels. It was not a far walk when I stayed off property but having the luxury of hanging out at DD there and just going back into the hotel is really nice. There is quite a nightlife at DD there. Very different from WDW's DTD. My favorite stay was at GC - had a view of DD and that was great!

Ilene, You are welcome. We actually found our rental house via craigslist.

Happy Passover, next year if she is out here, she is welcome to come to my house.

Cheryl

Happy Passover to all our friends!!!

We have been to DL as well and stayed at the Disneyland hotel (paid cash - oh the horror) and loved it! We really enjoyed DL and parts of CA (some rides were a bit much for me - :rolleyes1 ).

I wore my crocs last night without socks and don't like them as much - any suggestions? Do they have different ones at the parks??? ooooh my shopping has already begun :rotfl2:

There was a whole thread about crocs and socks the other day on the Budget Board. It read like a Dr. Seuss book. Personally, I prefer my crocs only without socks so I don't have a suggestion! :lmao:

They only have the pink/white/green/blue/red/black mickey crocs at WDW BUT there's a little Crocs store right at MCO!

Have we all seen all the new varieties of crocs? I'm afraid I can't keep up! I really think these will be my next pair--they come in celery which would be my choice over fuschia. :scared:

You can sit by me, my friend. :hippie: I can't stand my Beach styles without socks. For some reason, my feet sweat and nothing is grosser than sweaty feet.

My solution which are actually very comfortable:

We saw several new styles in Hilton Head. But, unless you have very narrow feet, they aren't going to work. I loved the look for the "cleos" but there is no way they were going to fit on my wider feet. :(

Now I'll have to head over to the budget board and find that thread.
