Can anyone tell me anything about an iPod?

I'm thinking Cameron might like one for Christmas, but I am very technically challenged in this area (as Mary knows I had no idea what her PDA was although my kids did  ). Gary & Cameron are off camping for the weekend, so I'm thinking of heading up to the mall to check them out. But....I don't want to be at the mercy of the Apple Salesperson either.

Can anyone share any info as to what I might be in the market for?
Cindy, I just wanted to add to what Julie has said...If your not too interested in the ingraving, check Sams club and Costco first. I was able to get Krystina a nano there for her bday for under $130.00 I think it was the 1GB, but may have been the 2GB. I am also in the market for the refurbished ipod shuffle for 29.99 at the apple store, they are sold out now, but I was told to check back daily as they add new ones daily. So just keep checking! Also the shipping is $4 for them, but free if over $50. HTH!

No worries there Mary. Dana is a sweetheart but she is too young for me. For the record, I am 33 but I still get carded a lot especially at WDW. Last week in NYC they looked at me like I had 3 heads when I ordered a beer and took my ID out like it was a natural instinct.

That's why I love Georgia. Onne of my first trips down there, we went out to dinner at a Macaroni Grill. While we waiting for a table, we went to the bar to get some drinks. Much to my surprise, I got carded. I was feeling pretty good about myself until I found out that in Georgia it's the law that everybody gets carded :rotfl2:

Okay currently there are 3 types of iPods on the market. They are known as: Video (aka iPod, iPod Video, 5G), Nano 2G, and the Shuffle 2G. A number followed by G stands for the generation. So 2G is Second Generation. There are also special U2 versions (as in the rock band) of both the Video and the Nano that come in Red, which I'll get at.

You will want to know two things: his color preference and size of music collection.

My personal feeling is this. When a teenager asks for an iPod or an MP3 player they generally want a Nano, and you want to target the 4GB if you feel the price is right. It's light, very portable, the new 2G is very durable (can be thrown in a backpack - the case is aluminum), and it's what their friends have, want, or talk about.

I have a black iPod Video 60GB model (see below), and I use it every day as I walk or work and even in the car.

Cheryl has a Black 8GB iPod Nano (but it's in a green case), and she uses it as a pedometer because she has the Nike attachment for it. The pedometer can only be used with a Nano, which is why she has a Nano and not a Video.

You will want to familiarize yourself with this page (and I'll help you below):

http://store.apple.com/1-800-MY-APPLE/WebObjects/AppleStore?family=iPod

The Video comes in two flavors and two colors: 30GB (GB just like the size of a hard drive - because it is a hard drive), and 80GB. There was a 60GB version that the 80GB recently replaced, but it's been discontinued though you may still find some on the shelves. The two colors are Black and White (note back is metallic in both cases, front is the color). They are prone to scratches.

The 80GB will cost $349. It holds up to 20,000 songs, and plays video.

The 30GB will cost $249. It holds up to 7,500 songs, and plays video.

The U2 (30GB) will cost $279, and is identical to the regular 30GB, but it's black with a red control dial, is engraved with the signatures of the members of U2, and comes with some special U2 videos only available on the device and nowhere else.

The Nano comes in 3 flavors and 6 colors: 2GB (silver), 4GB (silver, green, blue, pink, red), 8GB (black, red). They have an aluminum case and are more scratch resistant than the Video as a result.

The 2GB will cost $149. It holds 500 songs.

The 4GB will cost $199. It holds 1000 songs.

The 8GB will cost $249. It holds 2000 songs.

Now at this point you will have noticed that the 8GB Nano is the same price as the 30GB Video, and you're probably saying why get the 8GB Nano at all ever. Well there are a few reasons:

1) Notice the comment of Cheryl's pedometer above. The Video can not use the Pedometer. Since Cheryl's primary use of the Nano was for walking this was a crucial feature for her so she got a Nano over a Video.

2) Weight, the Video ways about 10 times what a Nano weighs.

3) Size, the Nano is about 25% of the size of the Video.

4) Color choices.

5) Durability and Resiliance (it is Flash Memory not a hard drive, and is made with an Aluminum case). Read as: Nanos are better for kids.

Finally there is the new 2G Shuffle. This comes in one color: silver. It is 1GB and can therefore store about 250 songs. It also does not have a screen which makes it a little bit different in terms of control (see below). However it weighs only a few ounces, is the size of a matchbook, and has a built in clip (could be worn as a broach).

The Video and the Nano have an LCD screen, you can surf your music and choose what you play, where you start, etc. The shuffle lacks this. You can only listen wherever it picks up (depending on settings you can only make inside iTunes - the Nano and Video as I said can do this on their own), and you can only jump to the next or the previous song, you can't pick a start point.

The Shuffle is $79.

Now why should you know the size of his music library? So you know what size works for him AND allows him to grow his library.

For example if he has 10 CDs. That's about 100 songs. A Shuffle works and he has room to grow.

However if he has 50 CDs that's about 500 songs. That will fill a 2G Nano, so a 4G Nano would be the best choice as he'd be able to carry his entire library and grow.

A few things you should know up front...

Things like cases, and lanyards cost extra, but not much extra if you spend time to locate them. I shopped and got Cheryl's green case with lanyard for her Nano for $12. Video cases are a bit more money. There are shuffle cases, but I can't see getting them, since it already has a clip and at <$100 it's a throw away item. If it breaks, get a new one.

You are married to iTunes. Other things will work, but you'll still need iTunes to upgrade your iPod (Apple updates about twice a year). iTunes is both simple and complex. Your son will probably want to get songs from iTS (iTunes Store). However, you should monitor him closely with this, as I've heard horror stories. I suggest that instead of backing his account with a credit card, you buy iTunes Store gift cards that you can find in just about any chain store (Best Buy, Target, Wal-Mart), and have him use these. This way you can both monitor and limit his purchases.

If you have more questions don't hesitate to ask.

Judy - Next time I'm home will be around Christmas so I don't know if I'll have too much time away from the family. When are you coming down to WDW next? Maybe we could meet up then. I used to live in New Milford so it sounds like I'm about 20-25 minutes from you. How far are you from the Palisades Center? I love going to see newly released movies at the IMAX there.

Jeff - we live about 10 minutes from the mall. Palisades Center is exit 12 and we're exit 14B. We go the mall quite frequently, since it has the best movie theater in the area - an AMC/Lowes Multiplex with stadium seating.

Diana Lyn said:
That's funny because we just made plans to take the kids to see Happy Feet at the IMAX in Palisades Center over the holiday weekend. I LOVE that mall.

Diana - you're coming down our way? Give us a call and we'll stop by to say hi.

That is one mall I enjoy going to. For those who have never been, it has every store you can think of from the major chains in it plus a full size home depot, BJ's warehouse, ice skating rink and one of my favorites, Dave & Busters. It's got Target, best buy, circuit city, Barnes and Noble, 2 food courts, a ferris wheel, a NASCAR experience, an IMAX theatre and a Loews stadium seating theatre. I know I'm not doing it justice for all that is there. The only bad part is it's slowly sinking into the swamp it's built on.

I think it started sinking the day it was built. When it opened, there were already cracks showing. Thank goodness they carpeted the first floor, because the concrete floor was plain ugly. Did you know it was intended to be bigger than the mall in Syracuse, making it second only to thed Mall of America. Thankfully, the Clarkstown Town board voted against that proposal.

We have three in this house.....soon to be 4.
dh has a regular ipod click wheel. i think it's about 20gb
kt has the same.
i have an ipod mini (they don't make them anymore....i think the nano replaced them)
nick will get a video ipod for christmas.

the biggest differences are the size of the stoarge. my mini has 4gb of storage. kt and mike's have 20gb, and i think nick's video ipod has 30gb. nicks will be the only one that can play movies and video podcasts.

all of them are VERY easy to work. they make listening to music or podcasts easy. all are easy to sync with the computer using itunes. they also play audiobooks.

i don't know much about the nano or the shuffle. i do know with the shuffle you can't pick which song to listen to next....you upload a bunch of them and it plays them in random order. there is no saying 'now i want to listen to xyz'

mike has had about 7 different mp3 players but they all had some sort of "flaw." some wouldn't do the audio books, some made it hard to pick which music you could listen to, some had hard to push buttons....

but once he got the iPod he couldn't be happier.

don't look around for sales. apple dictates the price and no one really strays from that. our meijer had them the other day at 30% off. i called at 10pm to see if they had any in stock (thinking i'd drive in to pick one up at midnight) but the guy said they already had more ppl in line than he had iPods and they'd been there since 7pm!

hth!!

I have a video ipod (30gb) that is the black one that holds a heck of a lot of video, music, photos etc. I do not have the largest version (in capacity) and I enjoy it but find it hard for my eyes to see the movies clearly. I doubt I fill it up with music as wow that would be challenging.

Matt has the Ipod nano and I think it's the 2 gb. He's filled it up so he has to switch out music to listen too - but he has a lot of music!

Apple does NOT allow their vendors to put these on sale much at all so you really can't get a good price shopping around everyone should have the same. Pricing is in the accessories.

The one Julie has is the same one two of my kids got. I found it for them on Amazon at $279.99. Most places had it for $299.99. Compared yo my other daughter's earlier 20gig model, it's much thinner. I almost hoped my Creative Sounds Zen Touch would break so I'd have an excuse to buy one for myself.

Speaking of which, I have a 20gig mp3 player with 3700 songs on it already and still have plenty of room.

Once again a DisBuddy asks and they get what's coming... this is a 90 second clip it runs about 8.3megs in size and took about three minutes to upload. Dialuppers click and go get a cup of joe, DSL & cable beasts shouldn't take but a second or two(or three or four....)

Please remember this is not to embarass, this is to demonstrate how much fun we had with our new life long friends. :duck:

On with the show...

Nothing to be embarassed about. I wish I had those moves. It was worth the wait :thumbsup2

BUT

we also got a Castawy Cay shoreside survival kit with

THE DUCKY WILLIAMS PUZZLE

Okay as previously stated I am as big a puzzle guru as Gail so this was WAY cool!

I am gonna get my pics in an mialing pack and sen them out tomorrow or Monday at the latest (sorry I took so long :guilty: )

Also getting nervous and excited about the CJ's

Squid

The Castaway Club shoreside survival kit is either the Ducky puzzle or a CD of the music played at sail away. For the 11 night cruise we received the CD but it was cracked. I called and they are suppose to send out a new one.

Hey Diana, I finished the Castle puzzle! It was hard to put together towards the end, trying to fit everything together, but it looks pretty cool.

I will post a picture later, I've got to go out an buy birthday gifts today for the boatload of family that has birthdays this week - 5 to be exact.

Cindy, Amy, Diana and other scrappers,
I thought I had this down but I'm confused by the "sign in" page. What is the purpose and what happens to the tags? Do they just sit in a pocket or do they get put on a page and displayed? Is it customary to do tags? Can you just have a lined page for Name, Dis Name, location etc. My idea is to use "tiny" tags and maybe display them all on two pages...is that consisten t with the idea?
Ok, I'm sorry that I'm so delayed on answering today. Emily had her Thanksgiving program & feast at school today.

Anyway, you most certainly can just have a lined page for people to sign in. It really is up to you and what you want to have on your sign in page. Last year, I made tags out of the character luggage tags. This year, I'm doing something completely different. It's really up to you. It's just a place that you can quickly see who contributed to your scrapbook.

DH has an iPod that just downloads music. Very easy to download from our computer. DD decided she would like an iPod for HER music. Well, we decided to upgrade to a 60g so she can have movies while we fly back and forth to Florida (the DVD player is too big and the battery does not last a long time). Anyway, downloading music is easy but downloading movies is NOT. You end up buying software to decode the movies and the process is technically difficult. Stick with an iPod for the music.

Todd you seem VERY knowledgeable about the video iPods. Have you downloaded any movies on your iPOD? Can you give us a recommendation on software that you used?

I signed up too but didn't get to apply for that campaign - I was asked to do one for amex and small business owners but I don't own a small business and didn't answer that way. I have a feeling this is not going to be for me. Ugh :(

I got one for the AMEX card too, but since I don't have a business either, I had to pass on that one.

Not movies, but some TV. I've bought a few (I think 5) Lost episodes from iTunes. Those transfer as a no-brainer exercise if you use iTunes. Simply tell them to sync, and they sync.

I have not purchased any movies from iTunes, because there's really no reason for me to just yet. If the upcoming iTV device is all that, and if I've got the $300 lying about I might get one.

The other sources for TV and Video have been iTunes freebies (they do about 1 video item and 2 songs per week - 1 mainstream, 1 indie), and my TiVo. If you have a TiVo (a real TiVo not a cable company copycat) you can use the TiVo desktop software (the $25 version, not the free version) to convert video for use on your iPod. I have episodes of Kim Possible, Lost, Justice League Unlimited, and a few other things.

One thing with TiVo Desktop is the software is a bit limiting in that it doesn't present a way off the bat to convert stuff that you are archiving on your computer that is not in the default TiVo Desktop directory. To solve this problem I wrote a wrapper program that forces TiVo Desktop to do this. You can find it here:

http://www.net-marks.com/software/tivo_converter_wrapper

As for getting movies off of DVD. Well, you'd need a DVD ripper - I've not really felt the need to do this so I don't know much about such software. Once you have it, you can use the following to convert any video (under Windows - I'm not a Mac user) for use on your iPod:

http://www.videora.com/en-us/Converter/iPod/

Another option is to that if you have Windows Media Center Edition and a TV card and use that to record TV, you can use the following to convert from the MCE proprietary DVR-MS format to standard MPEG which can be played on your iPod (or even your TiVo):

http://bluwiki.com/go/DVRMSToolbox_User_Guide

The steps would be use DVRMSToolbox to convert to MPEG, use Vidoera iPod Converter to convert to iPod.

Hope this helps.
