Which is the best route to take - go through Chicago or take 294 around the outside of the city?

We are going to leave about 1 PM (EST). This should get us to the south end of Chicago about 4PM (Chicago time) barring any slow ups due to weather.

Gary's telling me you want to take 294 and to NOT go through Chicago. The hotel in right off of 294 --- as a landmark, look for signs for the Rosemont Theatre. They will direct you off of the highway.

Maybe Mark will pop in with directions. If not, I'll make sure that Gary posts some tonight.

I should have posted some driving directions before now.

To get to the hotel from MI: Take 294 north to the River road exit. You'll go under an Oasis and then the O'hare Airport will be on your left as you're approaching the exit. Follow the overhead signs, the exit ramp is on the right. You want to go fractionally south on River road, it is a right turn after you exit the highway. The hotel will also be on your right. Do NOT take I 94 thru the city. The Dan Ryan, the section of 94 that is south of downtown, is under a multi year reconstruction and there are lane closures.

If you're going to Archiver's: Head north on River road which is a left turn onto River out of the parking structure, go north to Golf road, turn right. Stay in the right lane. When it opens to three lanes, stay right. Make a right turn onto Milwaukee Avenue, immediately get in the left lane and make a left turn at the first light, and then right once you're in the parking lot. Archiver's is right in front of you. :)

To get to the pizza place, it's on Higgins, which crosses River a bit north of the hotel. Coming from the hotel, a left turn, from Archiver's a right. Down about a mile or so. I'll dig up that map and repost it later today.

I was typing, proofreading and such while you were posting :p

Safe travels for all you folks headed to Chicago. I was watching GMA this morning and it looks like it's going to messy in the midwest.

I knew you would come through!! After all, you saw how much I paid attention on our drive to and from Michigan. :)

Ok, updates:

Here's the map to lunch at Gino's Pizza again. (click here)

The hotel's just off the bottom right on River road, the restaurant is up on the top left on Higgins where the green highlighter is.

Now, for the weather. We're starting to see some spotty snowfall on radar.

http://www.wunderground.com/radar/mixedcomposite.asp?region=b3&size=2x&type=loop

This is a slightly different radar, as it shows where the real snowfall is happening. I'm still a bit doubtful we're going to get that dumped on. If you look there's a faint line of the back of the front going diagonally from Milwaukee to just above the K in Kansas City. As that line sweeps east following the warm edge of the front, the snow is sweeping up from the sw, it's just going to be a matter if any real amounts form up in our area before the front moves east. Sofar, the substantial stuff is staying south of KC. Let's hope it doesn't move quick enough north.

I would take 294 around the city...its Friday, and the traffic is awful in the city...especially...90/94. There is always traffic there. We are heading downtown early tomorrow to avoid the traffic!

Safe travels to all traveling to Chicago...the weather looks very messy!! See everyone Saturday afternoon!

I'm dreaming of a white Christmas
Just like the ones I used to know
Where the treetops glisten,
and children listen
To hear sleigh bells in the snow

I'm dreaming of a white Christmas
With every Christmas card I write
May your days be merry and bright
And may all your Christmases be white

I'm dreaming of a white Christmas
With every Christmas card I write
May your days be merry and bright
And may all your Christmases be white

This is for my county. I am about 70 miles south of where Cindy lives. They really think more snow will come our way then farther north.

Oh well the garden tractor has the snow blade on, the tire chains on, the gas tank full, and the battery charging!

And you know what they say

" when the going gets tough, the tough go to HOOTERS"

YUP calendar girl signing today so we are driving to a nearby HOOTERS to get calendars signed and PICS taken! We are taking my manly Avalanche and DAMN the snow full speed ahead! HOPEFULLY I will post some pics tomorrow some time!

I agree with you Steve. It seems like we get a dusting here and you get 2' of snow by you. Same goes usually for rainfall.

Good thing is that no one is coming from way south where you are. Tina has a drive from that area, but I'm betting it's mostly highway for you, Tina, right?

Let's hope it all misses us. What a difference from last weekend when it was in the 60's around here and beautiful.

Everyone take it slow and stay safe.

Steve, have fun at Hooters.

I'm thinking we might have some bad driving on the western part of Michigan and past the lake and Chicago, but once we get headed north it should be fine. If it's slippery, we'll drive slow, but we will be there!

We were going to leave about 3 PM, then I moved it back to 2 PM. I might just move it back to 12:30, that way Deanna will only miss 2 classes and lunch hour. Do you think Deanna will mind if I take her out of her last two classes? :rotfl:

Gail, if you want to call me on your way, I'll update you with the conditions in this area. Just don't plan to talk my ear off, okay? ;) :rotfl2:

2pm update:

It really looks like it's going south. The advisory has been moved from 3pm to midnight now, they've also lowered the total accumulation from the morning's 6-12 inches down to 5 to 9 inches. I fully expect them to lower it further before the end of the day.

Here's the current radar: http://www.wunderground.com/radar/mixedcomposite.asp?region=b3&size=2x&type=loop

The front continues to bow south and east, and that swirl of snow down in Kansas simply hasn't moved much all day. If the front continues to move on the north end when the snow does start tracking along it, it could miss the Chicago area completely. Although I think we might see some light scattered for sure, maybe even a bit of substantial snow by morning.

Can you tell I'm not a huge fan of computer projections? Their 'models' have as much intelligence sometimes as some of the ones on America's Top Model.

Gail, one thing the Illinois tollway is efficient about is plowing. If we get any substantial amounts of snow the roads will be clear in no time flat. I'd say your guess is going to be on, even if the roads arn't poor, the traffic will be slow in the Indiana corridor just because it has snowed. 80/94 bunches up at the drop of a hat.

Everyone heading around tomorrow, be careful, 1st snows in the Chicago area tend to be messy even if it turns out to be nothing.

Despite the winter weather approaching there is a BRIGHT spot!

November 30th ends the hurricane season in the Atlantic Basin!

I can vouch for that! ::yes:: It was 72 degrees on Monday and Tuesday, and today we're getting 12" of snow and sleet. They closed the schools this morning before it even started snowing! :faint: They closed my office at noon, thank goodness.
Safe travels for all going to Chicago tomorrow!! pixiedust:
Cheryl, glad you are feeling better! Take care. pixiedust:

I'll be on my cell phone and between John and I we only get 1000 minutes a month! :chat:

Thanks to everyone for the weather updates. My biggest concern is the western area of Michigan and Indiana. I think once we get passed that section it should be ok.

I liked the 65 temps we had yesterday a whole better :sunny:
