2005 points transfered 2004?

I have a quick question can points from 2005 use year be transfered to my account and be used in Aug of 2004? I would appreciate if anyone can help answer this questions.

Yes, 2005 points can be "borrowed" into your 2004 use year, but only at the time of reservation, and only exactly as many as you need for the ressie. Just a note of warning, once borrowed, they cannot be returned.

If I am not mistaken borrow points cann ot be transfered to another's member account. I just want to double check. The only way a member can have 2005 points now is if they borrow them right?

I don't think so. I think you would have to have them make the ressie for you in order to do that. I am sure someone who knows for sure will answer here soon.

I think they can transfer their 2005 points into our account and then you can borrow from there. I transferred some of my 2004 Aug. points to a friend of mine to make reservation in October. Now this really isn't borrowing because the reservation is after Aug., but I think it can be done.

From my limited understanding, once they are transferred they can be banked but not borrowed.

Do I have that correct?

I calld member services and they said you can't transfer future years points into another members account. The only way a member could have access to 2005 points now is to borrow the points. Borrowed points can't be transfered into another member's account

Thanks for getting back. I was pretty sure that was how it would work, but a little bit of doubt was there too. I still think the other member could make the reservation and link it to yours.

I was told by someone on this board that you can transfer 2005 points to 2004. This is called a manual transfer. I have not done this myself but have heard of those who have. MS needs to know this is a manual transfer. It takes a few days to do as opposed to a regular transfer which is instantaneous. I'm not sure about borowing the points after they have been transfered.

Can anyone verify the manual transfer? I'm interested in doing this as well.

<font face="times" size="+0">chirona, the only way you could use 2005 points for an Aug-04 reservation is if you use <i>your own</i> 2005 points by borrowing them. Unfortunately, as mentioned earlier, you can only bank transferred points, but you may not borrow them. So the result is that it isn't possible to use transferred 2005 points for your reservation, since you can't borrow them.

As for whether 2005 points can be transferred at all, AFAIK the answer is "Yes"... and I believe, chirona, if you asked to speak to a Manager at MS, you could get a different answer. The thing is that only those members who are currently in their 2004 Use Year (so this would mean members with Feb, Mar, Apr, and soon Jun UYs) can transfer their 2005 points. This is because MS can only handle transfers in your CURRENT and NEXT use years. (Unless they have changed their rules recently)

OnTheRocks, an example of how you can currently transfer 2005 points to someone's 2004 UY is as follows:

John has a Feb Use Year.
Tina has a Sep Use Year.

John's 2005 Use Year covers the dates of 2/1/05 - 1/31/06.

Tina's 2004 Use Year covers the dates of 9/1/04 - 8/31/05.
Tina's 2005 Use Year covers the dates of 9/1/05 - 8/31/06.

John could transfer his 2005 points to Tina. But due to system limitations, Tina would be required to specify to MS which Use Year she wants to receive the points into.

If Tina chooses to receive John's 2005 points into her 2004 Use Year, then those transferred points can definitely be used for the date range of 2/1/05 - 8/31/05.

If Tina chooses to receive John's 2005 points into her 2005 Use Year, then those transferred points can definitely be used for the date range of 9/1/05 - 1/31/06.

I know this seems confusing because technically, according to the written rules in our POS, Tina <i>should</i> be able to use John's transferred points for any dates from 2/1/05 - 1/31/06. But MS has had a limitation in their system that has difficulty tracking that. One can assume that if the issue is pressed with a Manager, perhaps Tina could get a full year's use out of John's transferred points, but so far I have not seen anyone here on the DISboards volunteer their experience with the system limitation. Another thing that is unknown is what happens when you bank transferred points. So if Tina banked John's 2005 points, then what date range does MS's system think they can be used?

Anyway, sorry I went on for a bit. Obviously this topic fascinates me for some weird reason. For anyone who's interested, please feel free to click on the link in my sig for more details on transfer rules. It has been a half a year since I last did a transfer, so I wouldn't be surprised if there were any new recent developments as far as the "Unofficial" rules go. MS seems to be constantly giving out conflicting answers about points transfer limitations. It's unclear if the reason is that they actually are changing the rules all time, of if it's because there is a lack of detailed training and CMs are giving out incorrect info. *sigh* HTH!</font>
