2005 Hurricane Season outlook worsens

Glad I am at the BWV. At least we will have a kitchen to cook in and I don't have to worry about going out onto the Boardwalk to find food. :teeth: We lived through Isabell here in Richmond. We didn't have power for 2 1/2 weeks! A few days of rain at Disney is nothing!! :umbrella:

I know i should aim this at my TA but i will try here first.

I opted out on disney travel insurance......
Disney will make as much accomadations for us as possible in case of a hurricane but what if my plane cant make it to disney?

Do i get screwed out of my disney trip? Lose money to re arrange our plans?
I dont care if i lose dining as it was just a perk to begin with...........
What if i cant fly out do i lose my room? and would disney expect me to call around to find a room somewhere else or do they try to accomadate us there too?

Now im nervous dang it!
I just barely said no to the travel insurance yesterday and paid my vacation off.

any one have some peace of mind for me? :wizard:

I guess I'm more worried about flying during hurricane season, especially since I have to fly down most of the eastern coast. Just get me there and back with as little turbulance as possible!
I feel safer when I'm at Disney whether that's realistic or not.

Last year we were scheduled to fly to Orlando just before Ivan was predicted to affect the area. We started to cancel air tickets and resort reservations, but rescheduling got too complicated - trying to work around work schedules, kids activities (and could I really give up our first cindy's breakfast?!?) So, despite our family and friends strongly advising against it, we decided to go anyway. I just tuned everything out and went full steam ahead. Since Ivan ended up hitting the panhandle, we lucked out - but I know we were probably crazy and a little irresponsible to take the kids into a probable hurricane. I guess I just went Disney nuts! We had a great trip and the parks were pretty dead for a couple days.

My sister and brother inlaw live in Homstead (just South of Miami) and she was telling me yesterday that Sept is supposed to be the worst this year. Their house was destroyed by Andrew several years ago and her sister was destroyed by Charlie last year. I hope for everyones sake it's not going to be so bad.

HeatherinVT, Its not too late. You can still get trip insurance from www.insuremytrip.com. I bought mine through them. The insurer was Travelex Travelite. A+ rated company and have seen many cruisers/land vacationers recommend them. They cover losses due to weather and a wide variety of other things. Medical care is even primary coverage. Generally better and cheaper coverages than Disney anyway. Good luck to us all traversing during hurricane season!

I was trying to remember when was Frances and Jeanne? What months? I am going the Labor Day week of September and I have been reading alot about the hurricanes hitting the Atlantic harder this year.

im wondering how bad sept. will be too. i recently moved from pensacola, fl, and was in hurricane ivan. hubby is in navy. he is still in pensacola, but is going to japan in oct. for 2 yrs so he moved kids and i up to arkansas to be by grandma.
I thought my weekend disney trips to disneyworld were going to be over until hubby made cheif. he is getting pinned( chief ceremony) sept 16th , so kids , grandma and i were going to go to disney world for a 6 day trip. my mom has never been to any of the disney parks. so i thought it would be nice for her to see.
but after ivan i am terrified of those darn hurricanes. we will be going from sept 18th until the 25th. guess i will just keep constant vigil on the national hurricane site..lol

I think Francis was was in the middle of September and Jeanne was towards the end of the month.

I know someone who went during Jeanne, and they said the kids were playing games in the hotel lobby and it was a lot of fun. Well, for the kids. :teeth:

And they stayed 2 extra days.

All we can do now is hope for the best.

Frances shut down WDW over Labor Day weekend. Jeanne hit at the end of September.

I think September 10th is considered the peak of the hurricane season. There's a new tropical depression out there that bears watching. It's likely to become Hurricane Irene. However, right now the track looks like it will stay to the north or recurve out to sea (hopefully). But it's too early to tell....

My knows everything SIL called today. I started saying how much we are looking forward to being at Disney and hoping that the hurricanes stay away. She said,"Don't worry, hurricane season is over before September." I just said, "Oh."

It would be nice if anyone REALLY could predict these things. Even IF the #of storms develop as predicted, the more important thing is WHERE they go. And we all know from many previous storms, they have a hard time predidcting that even HOURS in advance--much less weeks.
So we'll watch, wait, and hope for the best.

::yes:: DH said basically the same thing yesterday after I sent him a link to this thread with a suggestion that perhaps we should rethink our Sept 28-Oct 4 trip.

We will also be going during September (9/24 to 10/4). Instead of driving myself nuts about this, I keep reminding myself that last year was a rare event for WDW. Did anyone worry like this before last year?

I was informed by Disney that travel insurance DOES NOT cover for Hurricans. My plan is if one hits on the route to the airport, then the flight will be canceled and my airline will rebook (no fee) if they cancel the flight. Disney will change my reservation (no fee) if my flight gets canceled. Disney only charges a fee if you want a refund. Since, I would be rebooking the trip, the only issue I would face is the possibility of losing the free dining promotion, but you never know, Disney may still honor that. If the hurricane hits while at Disney, I have heard that they are very good about it. And if my flight home gets canceled, I can always stay a couple extra nights. Not a really bad thing considering the cheap cost of adding an 8th or 9th day, plus I could switch from YC to a cheaper hotel if I need to.

We booked through Disney and are insured through Insure America. We always get the insurance and since we were stuck in Jeanne last year I double checked this year for Huuricane coverage. It is listed as Natural Disaster and it is covered completely.
We always purchase insurance because of two kids who always seem to get sick on vacation .Luckily its never been sick enough to cancel or reschedule but it's just nice to know its an option. I think it was around $100 .

Exactly. As I said in an earlier post, can anyone find the information of just how many times Disney World has closed due to hurricanes in 34 years? I'd be willing to bet it's minimal, at best.

Disney was only closed once, last year during Jeanne, for hurricanes. The parks never completely shut down, but they did close early @ times.

Of course this is why Disney is giving the Free Dining Plan. They KNOW that there will be some impact from storms, but they want to minimze it.

For those who have packages and are flying, I do recommend you spend the extra for the insurance. Disney was very accomodating last year during the hurricane season for people needing to cancel or change their ressies, but they have no control over your airline. Many airlines charge $100 per ticket to change, so if you spend $100 total for insurance, you may be better off.

I didn't get the insurance....I figure we are driving down and if we need to change the dates, we can do that. I don't know if we will still get the free dining plan, but if not, so be it.....we originally planned without knowing about it anyway.

Please be careful when purchasing travel insurance!

READ the terms of the policy before you put your money down. A LOT of policies do NOT cover hurricanes.
