2005 DCL Points Chart is out!

I called this morning to book DCL on points. MS said the chart was given to them Friday afternoon for 2005 points.

I wanted to book Wonder for the 4 night February 13th sailing.

We are a party of 4 (Me, DW, DS-6 and DS-3). On 2004 chart this would have cost 290 points - Value season (MS confirmed this sailing is value season for 2005) - for a Category 10.

2005 points points v. 2004 for this sail break down like this:

1st/2nd - 96(2004); 111(2005)
DS-6 - 50 (2004); 57 (2005)
DS-3 - 48 (2004); 55 (2005)

Total 290 (2004); 334 (2005)

A 15% increase in points from 2004 to 2005, OUCH!

In any event, we are re-evaluating our options and may choose to wait on DCL to do it with cash at a later date. We'll see.

If you were thinking about DCL for 2005, give MS a call and let me know how it goes (although the CM suggested that there were significant increases in all seasons).

Will they be putting it online soon? maybe we need to go earlier than we had planned. That is a big jump in points.

If they keep it up I don't imagine many would use their points for cruises? Is that what they are aiming for? Anyone?

Did you check other catagories? Curious if the 15% holds up & down the scale of accommodations.

Just checked www.allseastravel.com to price this because we are looking at that exact sailing too. You can buy through them for $2077 without paying the $75 exchange fee. 334/2077 = 6.21 value per DVC point. Gee back out your annual dues and you'd only be getting about $2.00 for your investment. Guess I'll go cash.

I checked categories 6-11 with MS this morning. Pretty much all categories had similar LARGE jumps (e.g., cat 11 from 250 to 286).

Like you DisneyBill, I am looking into a cash ressie. We have checked with Dreams Unlimited. For 6 people in 2 category 11's (we need a handicapped accessible room), it was $2,880. We are checking other categories, but I am heavily leaning toward cash.

Luckily we love Disney, because the non-DVC resort options seem to be getting prohibitively expensive.

Yikes! What a big increase, DW and I were planning a late 2005 7 night cruise. If the increase is the same for that, we won't be able to afford it even with borrowed from 2006.
Must be too many DVC taking up their precious space on the cruise.

Does anyone know how many consecutive years "pts for cruising" has gone up?
Unless a person has banked pts that may expire.......it looks like cash is the best option from now on.

I don't know. But I am renting out my points for our next Disney cruise.

The increases sure makes the whole idea of a "DVC cruise ship" more and more attractive!

Think it will ever happen?

Would you buy into a DVC ship if offered?

I don't think a DVC ship would happen... I'm not sure I would buy into it anyway.
But I'm glad I went ahead and paid cash for my 2005 cruise.

I am glad that the DVC negotiators are looking out for our best interests when it comes to DCL. I don't think I will ever use my points for DCL ever again.

This is quite defeating.

We should not be at all surprised. Haven't we learned that DVC members have an unlimited supply of money and that the bean counters at DVC are more than willing to separate us from our $$?.

Perhaps. But they can only do so with our willing cooperation.

A member can always choose to pay cash to cruise and then either use his/her points at a DVC resort (best value) and/or rent the equivalent number of points for cash.

IMHO, those who use points to cruise are paying a premium for the convenience of reserving through MS - if the premium exceeds the value of the convenience, most will choose another alternative.

While I respect your opinion, I do not share it. DVC members do not have to use points for cruising. I reserve my "Mooooooo's " for situations when I don't have a viable choice for something that is a necessity. Neither condition seems to apply here.

for me, the Mooooo is that DVC thinks of us as the cash cow. That happens to be my opinion, but you don't have to share it!

The more I think about it, I believe DVC uses the option of DCL to perspective members as a very attractive lure that in reality is not workable for most members on a regular basis.

Next time you're around one of the DVC kiosh and a CM is giving the 5 minute presentation, notice how the prospect is deeply drawn to the option of cruising on points. Beyond the original "how do points work" questions, by far the most questions come about the topic of cruising on points.

I don't think most DVC candidates really understand the points chart and assume the points are per vacation, and are subject to future increases unlike DVC resorts. DVC kiosh reps and guides tend to move-past a thorough explanation of the DCL option because I think they know that those who are truly interested in buying DVC for the cruising aspect probably wouldn't if they had a true grasp of some of the ins & outs. I've had one-on-one conversations with some of them later and they don't. Just look at how many times questions are posted on these boards about cruising on points and people are faced with the fact that their 210 point contract won't enable them to cruise 1 time and return to their normal WDW vacation pattern the next.

I just wish members came away from their purchase with a better understanding of this particular option of DVC.
