Good Wednesday Morning Everyone.

gaRry - I need to ask oldest DD if she wants a shirt so I will have to get back to you later. I will try make it this afternoon or first thing in the morning.

Well my DIS name is kinda of obvious also. It originally started out as my AOL name which was my first initial, last name, & some numbers. Not very imaginative or exicting. So I decided to change it and I pick DVC4US - DVC(because we are DVC owners), 4(because there are 4 of us) & Us(because it's us). Still not very exciting, but it will do.

DH and I were looking at some of the excursions light night.(When he finally got home around 11pm. I was talking and he was dozing - happens all the time.) Right now we are looking at jet skis in Key West(hope it's not to cold), the pirate cruise in St. Lucia, and it looks like the best golfing would be on St Thomas, but that is Christmas day. Oh well, he's so good to us, I might let him slide by with this one. We'll have to see.

Well, off to read the boards and so some other things.

tinksdad, I didn't realize you were in remodeling. Can I pick your brain for a minute? If you saw about a week ago, I tried to prime, but the paint wouldn't stick. I ended up scraping most of it off with a putty knife, but there are areas where there are bits of paint stuck to the wall here and there and here and there.

It depends on several issues; What was the previous substrate material or paint? For instance, if it was a oil based (alkyd type) paint, then over coating with a latex generally won't come out well. It's best to stick with the same type of primer and paint overcoats.
Is this plaster or sheetrock? Was wallpaper involved?

I'm wondering if I just prime over that (with a good primer--Kilz 2) if that will smooth out those irregularities, or will I need to sand? Or mud and sand?

I really, really want to hear you tell me that it will be a smooth wall if I just prime over it, but I don't want to try that and have it look like H&#*. :)
Kilz will cover a lot of problems and is quite good at cover water stains and light stains prior to painting. A better product is Zero Lac.

Generally paint will not cover problems in the substrate. You might have to retexture or plaster to get the area in a consistent texture or look "prior" to painting.

Jeez-gone for the day and you guys go crazy. But then, with Ms. Yakkity Yak back, there should have been at least 20 pages....are you letting your guard down?

Linda

Okay, so do I need to go to Mary's webpage to look at the t-shirt designs? I can't remember....

Okay, so I am trying to be like Lynda and the wonder dog Cash and post alot, oh and like Stacey too!

My screen name-----

Sea-U-Later

It's the name of our 24 ft. cabin cruiser! It is in Page, Arizona. And we leave tomorrow after work for Lake Powell!!!! I am so excited to get out of town. Everyone has been playing all summer, and I have not done one fun thing (in terms of vacationing, at least). Anyone want to have a DIS meet at Lake Powell this weekend?

Linda

Oh, and we were on that wagon train too! We just got off in Utah!

We moved in and there was ugly wallpaper. A few years ago, knowing we'd be redoing the bathroom soon (soon for us is 3 years) I pulled off the wallpaper....just pulled it off. Didn't steam it, didn't chemically treat it. Now the shower has been tiled and we have to do the walls before the new floor/toilet/vanity go in.

It's drywall that had been painted that had wallpaper over that. Now the wallpaper is gone, and I assume most of the wallpaper paste is gone. The ugly green paint that is left held up VERY well with all of my scrubbing. Does that mean it's oil based? Or is there any way to tell? The Kilz I have is Latex, as is the top coat that I bought. Where would you go from here? I can mud/sand pretty well (most of the rooms we've redone have required a lot of mudding/sanding) Would it help to just put a thin layer of mud over the entire room and then sand it? Would that help the possible oil paint/latex paint situation? Or will the mud not stick well to oil paint (if that's what it even turns out to be)?

Thanks for letting me pick your brain!

I want to go to on the 17th to WDW and join you guys......do you think there is any way, I can ditch 12 other people and sneak over without anyone in my family knowing? I could say I was going Christmas shopping or something and no one can come with me. Do you think that would work?

:teeth:

Isn't remodeling work fun? I tell you, there is never a dull moment in this field. To answer your question (as if you really "care"), the underlying board is sheetrock. Tape, bed and then texture to finish the process known as drywall.

The hardest part of patching drywall is the matching of the texture, that and clean up all the flour like dust from the sanding....

way to go Stacey!

I DID care. The word sheetrock was escaping me. And you're right about matching the texture. The couple that built our house (a contractor & his wife built it themselves, for themselves) did the texturing in four or five stages. The wife wanted it "thick". Well, it definitely is that. We had a fellow do some other repairs to the drywall, and even he said he'd never seen anyone do it quite like they did. Needless to say, I didn't have the patience to match what they had done!

Ms. Yakkity Yak gave you all a break and went to bed last night. If you happen to pass by Cave Creek AZ on your way to the lake, you'd better give me a call!

I think that sounds like a GREAT plan. But you would probably have to at least bring DD. The rest of them won't miss you...there's too many of them. Shopping is always a good excuse.

And, yes, the t-shirts are on Mary's site.

This is so exciting, now that we're getting so close!!

OhMinnie......don't you have your hands full enough right now? Do you think you could add anything else to your life? Maybe you'd like to adopt one of my kids??

Sounds like the paint was oil-based. Guess that makes sense for a bathroom. We did the kid's rooms in oil-base to make them easier to clean. Everytime I have to clean a spot off of any of the other walls, the paint "disappears" quite easily. I found a spot in our bathroom where the painter had missed, so rather than call him back, I grabbed the can and painted it myself. Found out later it was the correct color....not the same paint. I "touched up" with a semi-gloss......ended up with a nice shiny spot, right in the middle of the wall of the water closet. Hard as heck to remove it, and then had to re-paint again.
My DH wishes I would stick to book work, and leave the projects to those who know what they are doing! I just hate waiting around for them.

I'm just really, really glad that our cruise isn't this weekend. I've been reading some of the posts, there is speculation that the Magic might stay at sea an extra day until the weather is clear. Projections are that Frances will hit FL Fri. night.

Scuba Diver, are you there? Are you planning a weekend in Orlando?

Naw, Stacey. DH likes people like you. Half his business is going in and fixing what others have messed up, and it's not always the homeowner. Lots of times it's other contractors!

Okay, I had to go over to Yahoo and figure out where in the world Cave Creek, AZ was?

Stace-if we end up down there, we will have really taken a wrong turn!

Linda

Speaking of book work, I think I have employees waiting for paychecks.

Guess I had better skedaddle. (I've been watching too many westerns)

Have a great day everyone!

Oh, and I got a T.O.P. up there..........

It's not that far off the beaten path!!!

And, just a little tid-bit of info.....our property has part of the first stage coach lines from the north (Flagstaff, Prescott) heading into Phoenix. The desert never grew back over the path, it's kind of neat.

If the wallpaper paste residue is still there, then that needs to be completely cleaned off first. I thought you had already talked about that. Joint compound (drywall mud) will stick to almost anything. If you want the best results then; get all the dust off the wall and float over the entire surface to be redone, retexture and then paint.

I like oil base paints for their durability, but they are a pain to clean up after. Of course, you can just throw away the brush/roller after like many people do.... LOL. The latex based paints are better than they used to be and getting better, and are generally less obnoxious in the odor department as well.

Just poking you a bit.

I "love" that heavy texture. Just boggles my mind why people would do that. Make dusting a real chore, and hard to hang pictures and of course makes painting a really fun!!
