2003 Guidebook engineering analysis

OK, so I've got nothing better to do....

But being a retired engineer , and based on another thread, and after a PM mail, I thought I'd just compare the new guidebook to the old. This is strictly from a manufacturing point of view, not on it's contents.

This is also based on a sample of two: My old book and my new book. Your results may vary.

The new book appears to use heavier grades of paper, and a considerably thicker binder glue. Personally I think it is more robust than last years and probably will hold up much better.

All in my (professional) yet humble opinion.

Very interesting! I understand everything except how you measured the thickness of the binder glue--did you do that on the end of the guide? Let's hope the performance measures up now!

I measured it at both ends of the binding. I looked carefully to see if it was just 'squeeze out' to give the thickness, but it doesn't appear that way at all so I interpreted it as a true cross-section of the glue thickness.

Thank you for that analysis, it was most interesting Wonder why they used a heavier grade of paper however (the reason for this years dues increase perhaps?)... our pages are fine, but I agree about the binder glue, it needed improving (our pages are coming out)...

Being a Non-engineer, I am always intrigued at the view from which engineers see the world. It definitely widened my smile this morning.

Out only reaction to the book was "boy those pictures look terribly fake." Looks like the same group of 5-10 people walked in fron of a blue screed for a while and then the editors superimposed different backgrounds. Not impressive. Luckily, it is only the contents (especially the point charts) that I was truly interested in.

Thanks for getting out the micrometer and doing that analysis. I don't think I will ever retire, having that much free time to do analysis on the member guide book would drive me crazy of course that may change in 40 years when it come time to retire, of course DVC will be ending around then too, so my life will be complete emptyness

(still awaiting for mine to arrive here in Western NY)

I will add an error analysis:

The machine cut of the outer edge of the book after binding needs a realignment. I had to cut the outer edge of about half the pages apart on ours. My guess is they print 2 pages at a time then have a machine cut off the outer fold.

I didn't think so. Most look like vacation pictures taken with a fixed focus 35mm 'pocket' camera. Probably submitted member pics. A very few, featuring the same family are very obvious staged pics, but probably made up to match the chapters as they are at the beginning of them.
