Never since equaled. The technical accuracy is astounding and you really get a feel for the lonliness out in space. And that Monolith thing on the moon - scary thing indeed! Did you know - when SpaceLab was up there, astronauts carefully ran around the shell of it, filmed it and sent the footage to Stanley Kubrick with a note saying, "You were right!" - and the crew of Apollo 11 were tempted to radio back to Earth saying, we found a large black monolith; discretion prevailed! Now we know that Russia plans to launch a space station when the ISS runs its course, after the space station in 2001 - a large wheel, with simulated gravity.

2001 - so ahead of its time.
