20 steps to making a custom shirt using DARK transfers - "how-to" procedures

If so, is there a standard measurement for adults that is commonly used?
If you are measuring, is it from the top of the neckline or the bottom of the hemline of the neckline?...

for kids, you can see from this photo that it's less than 5". I don't recall exactly (and I gave the kids' tees away so I can't measure now) but I think it may have been more like 3" for a size 6 (small) kids tee.

PS: there was only 1 tee I think that was crooked somewhat - not bad but I could tell! Not bad considering more than 70 made and only used a ruler for the first dozen or so!!! :woohoo:

Hi again,
I am going to use this design on one of my t-shirts.

My question is-is the white in background going to show up if I use a dark transfer and what color of shirt would you suggest?

Thanks.

okay.....hmmmm...don't know how to attach/include a photo....help please

Okay...let's try this. It's the link to the design page.

The Ohana design and princess designs....how do I not have the white back ground when I use the transfer paper?

Thanks.

oops...I need one more post to post links...

sorry...next one will be 10!

yes the white in the background WILL SHOW UP AS WHITE like this one did:

here's another example of white showing:

I think you'll get the idea. Not my favorite but it works I suppose.

so my suggestions to cut around the Mickey head as close as possible like I did in these shirts:

[/IMG]
P4120006.jpg
[/IMG]

Note on the "Bill" MM head above you'll see a little white between Tigger and the MM Head b'c I couldn't figure out how to cut out the white in between without trashing the transfer!

otherwise you can just trim as close as you can but you will see white - like on this one - when you use a dark transfer:

P4120004.jpg
[/IMG]

or this one:

P4120007.jpg
[/IMG]

the only other option is to use a LIGHT TRANSFER, like I did on these shirts:
33049c6c.jpg
[/IMG] and

0f5a4070.jpg
[/IMG]

the only problem is... that you will see exactly the color that's on the tee like the blue on the shirt above came through on the "roll of film" transfer itself. Not nice. :rolleyes1 Oh yeah and I don't personally like that transparent look (like scotch tape). :3dglasses

decisions, decisions. (Personally, I'd cut the white away from the Mickey head as close as possible but that's my opinion.) As far as color goes, a red t gives a dramatic effect, a gray t hides a multitude of sins, and a white t looks crisp and clean but I used whatever worked - the Incredibles I did on yellow (too bright now that I look back at them), the various MM heads I did on gray, white, green, and red ts. Sometimes I went for a "pop" of color like on this one:

Good luck whatever you decide! Here's a little pixie dust to help you along the way... :wizard:pixiedust:

For those who have made tote/trick or treat bags... Did you wash before ironing on the design, or do the vinegar wash afterwards? It's not like DD will be wearing the trick or treat bag, so I'm not so afraid of the color running. But, do the canvas bags at the craft stores have sizing on them as well that I need to wash off?:confused3 I'm just afraid of it not looking as "crisp" if I wash it first. Thank you so much for all the help!

I did not wash mine, it worked fine (not sure if there was sizing on it or not - just took a chance).

I have a quick question...did a stick family on a red shirt. Shirt was pre-washed, and I was using a dark transfer. I was expecting a white background with a red border...what I got was a dark pink background with a red border.

I'm guessing it was because I did not use M_I_C_K_E_Y's transfers? Could it have been another reason? The dark transfers were Hanes. (shirts were not, so there went the idea of their 'mess up' insurance!)

may have been the transfer itself (but I doubt it); more likely the iron was left on too long or was too hot! BTW, I use HP transfers (not MICKEYs w/o a problem). Never used Hanes transfers - never even saw them!

Any good transfers papers that I can find at a local craft store, walmart or office supply store? I want dark transfers, and I have HP Photosmart printer of those all in one, printer, scanner, fax ones.

Also, any ideas buying for 100% cotton shirts? I'm thinking blue and maybe brown ones for all of us if I can find them. I need adults XL, kids 10-12 and kids size 5, so I may have to go white as it would be easier for find the colors in the sizes I need.

if u need to buy locally, I'd recommend HP transfers; avery as a 2nd choice. If buying online you can get either HP (fast overnight shipping sometimes even free) or Amy's (MICKEY'S). There are others but these have been proven to work reliably well!

Re tees just go to Walmart or Michael's or even the Dollar Tree store and see what's available. And, don't think they all need to be the same color - perhaps girls in one color - boys in a different or adults in one color and kids in a different or everyone in different colors with the same designs. Lots of ways to slice it! good luck.

What software program do use? Totally did no know I needed a software program. Help me!!

re software program, if you want to add anything (like a name) to a design that's already available as a generic, then you'd need a software program like Photoshop. If the design is "good to go" and needs no modification, then you won't! Sorry I wasn't clear on that distinction.

Personally, I used Camedia which came with my Olympus digital camera for modifying the design or Photoshop Elements 6.0 when I decided I couldn't live without that!

I tried my hand at this iron-on thing for the first time ever tonight, and I'm so upset! My first shirt turned out fine, but shirts two and three look terrible. The white background of the transfers turned yellow!
I thought maybe the iron was too hot, so I turned it down, but then the transfer wouldn't stick to the shirt properly. Does anyone have any suggestions for what I may be doing wrong? Oh yeah, I leave in TWO days!

sorry nobody answered in time for your trip but here's my thoughts on the problems as it may help others -

yellow?! Hmmm, sounds like the iron was too hot.
doesn't "stick" - hmmm, sounds like the iron was too cool (or wasn't washed first and had sizing on it).

after reading some more I realized that this wasn't possible so I guess I am stuck! Hubby won't pay for more ink but I have all of these great disigns to make.

all you need is a little luck - and a friend with an ink jet printer! Perhaps you can swap something in return for using their printer! Try it if it's not too late.

...okay.....hmmmm...don't know how to attach/include a photo....help please
to attach a photo, the photo first needs to be in a public account (e.g., photobucket, smugmug). Copy the "img" code for the photo then click on the icon above your post that shows a postcard image - a couple of mountains with a postage stamp - it'll be just to the left of the "wrap" icon and just to the right of the "insert email link" icon while you're composing your post.

Ok, I have a problem that I hope someone can answer for me. I followed the directions for printing out a design out of a photobucket, but it is fuzzy!
I dont know what I am doing wrong, i made the pic 100% to copy/paste from photobucket and printed but it is not as "crisp" looking as the ones I am seeing on here.

I did not change anything in the actual design, I just picked the size I wanted and printed. I have a HP printer/scanner, that I thought was pretty good.

I hope someone can help me
Thanks

sounds like it's too big for the # of pixels in the design - Are you stretching the size at all? (If the design you selected was 100% to begin with then I'd guess you are making it bigger than it can be - may not be anything you're doing wrong but how the original design was made.)

Check to be sure you are copying shirt DISigns. I have disigns in my account that are made for 4x6 cards. Others might have DISigns that are not for shirts but for other things. if all else fails, go to the DISigner and ask them? Penny

thanks for the insight Penny!

I'm going to be making some shirts later on this summer, and I have a question regarding the vinegar wash.... Do I HAVE to dry them in a dryer after the vinegar wash or can they air dry. I ask because none of my clothes get dried in the dryer and I would like to avoid the dryer if possible. TIA!

If you do the vinegar wash, it's my understanding that you need to put them in the dryer b'c they need the heat to "set."
