$20 Carry-On Bag Fee on Spirit Airlines

I think it is about time that the airlines started to do something about all the carryons that people have. More people are carrying on their luggage to avoid the fees. That slows everyone down.

I think the airlines have every right to impose a fee. There is only so much space available in the overhead bins and people really try to push the limit with the size of their carryon luggage.

If a passenger is trying to carry on a piece of baggage that does not meet the carry on size restriction or has too many pieces than the bag should be taken by the airline and checked and the passenger charged the checked bag fee if there is one. Having a fee for both a checked bag and carry on is overkill. Almost everyone traveling needs to bring at least one bag as we all need clothes etc. That bag needs to be either checked or carried on. Just build the bag fee into the cost of the ticket. Southwest does this and is very successful.

The only reason they are charging this fee is because they can. This isn't to reduce the amount or size of bag the passenger brings on board...they could care less. They are seeing all this and thinking why should they (that's you and me) be allowed to carry all this on for free? Let's charge them for it! And it's no different nowadays then it was 10 or 20 years ago, people still haul on a lot of stuff...it's a tight space, that's how it's going to be except now you're getting shafted for it.

I think I might start pulling a "Joey" from friends and wear EVERY PIECE of clothing I will need for my trip on my person (and do lunges while walking onto the plane) ... that'll learn 'em

Right on Kim!! This is the real problem, the airlines are not enforcing their own rules. The high baggage fees are the reason people are trying to carry more luggage onto the plane and why the bins are overly full.

The reason the airlines started charging extra for checked bags in the first place was as a "Fuel Surcharge" because fuel prices went up. These fees did not go away when fuel prices went down, in some cases the airlines have since raised the bag fees to a even higher dollar amount per suitcase. Now they are looking for ways to charge you even more.


Kuddos for Southwest for not gouging their customers.


I am currently pricing a flight trying to decide whether or not I can make the trip with carry-on only rather than pay the $25 per bag fee for each leg of my 4 day trip. Unfortunately Southwest does not have the favorable flight schedule for this trip or I would only give them my business.

If the airlines are having a problem with people bringing bags that are too big onto the plane they should enforce the rules, not charge people money and then allowing them to break them. If a bag is too big to fit tell them they need to go back and check it or charge them to do curbside check.

Ummm, like full overhead bin situatioin couldn't have been predicted when the implemented the checked bags fee? So, now the underseat areas are going to be chocked full of stuff so people will have problems stepping over them. Next there will be another fee to "help" alleviate this problem. Then another ,and another.

We just booked with Continental and it's a $23 fee per bag per person. You get that rate when checking in online. If you check in at the airport an additional $5 charge is added to make it $28 per bag per person. We were told this is happening to all airlines for domestic flights.

Now that I understand exactly what is going, I have to admit I have mixed feelings. First off, I think it is absolutely ridiculous to be charged just to use the overhead bins. However, I find it highly annoying when I'm on a plane that is delayed because people bring the largest carry-on they can find. It delays my flight from leaving and causes a lot of traffic and aggravation. Despite this, I understand that there has been an increase in carry-on luggage because of the airlines' fees for checked bags. I think all around this is an ugly situation. Enough is enough.

I think charging for larger carry-ons is awesome. The carry-on situation has gotten way out of hand lately. Almost every flight I've been on in the past little while has had more than one passenger trying to get from the back to the front of the plane to gate check their carry-on because there was no more room in the overhead compartments. Passengers won't be trying to cram an overstuffed, heavy carry-on into the overhead compartment, and it should make boarding and exiting the plane much quicker. I hope the other airlines do the same!

For all except Southwest. Thank goodness for them. I love Southwest. I just have to wait until noon on Monday to check in for my flight next Tuesday.

I agree. It's amazing the bags some people use as carryons. I've seen 1 bag take up almost the entire overhead bin. But I don't know if nickel and diming passengers is the answer. If the reason they're doing it is to deter people from using bags that are too large, why not just not permit the bags to be carried on and make them check it at the gate?

But I do have a plan for summer WDW travel - I'll just pull out my really big purse, put 2 changes of clothes,a swimsuit, a 3-1-1 bag in it plus the stuff that normally goes in it and call it a day.

Then I'll just ship everything I buy home and do laundry while there.

The only problem is that I'm not flying to WDW over the summer.

Now I've got to come up with a good December clothing plan just in case.

These charges are for checked bags as far as I'm concerned. I haven't heard anything about carry-ons.

These charges are for checked bags as far as I'm concerned. I haven't heard anything about carry-ons.

huh? Spirit Airline just announced that they will start charging $20.00 (and up) per carry-on bag for flights after August 1st.

All of that can be accomplished by enforcing the maximum size of bags at check in and again at the gate. If a bag isn't checked and is too large instead of jamming it into an overhead the gate attendant can charge you a fee to do gate check the bag. Once people know they are enforcing size rules they will stop over packing their carry-ons.

A charge isn't needed to accomplish this, enforcing existing rules is all that is needed.
