20/40 vision in an almost 10 year old -UPDATE

My DS is 13 and his vision is 20/325, yup 325.
There was no question that he needed glasses! He wore them for about a year, and then switched to contacts.

Just incase you were wondering you can leagally drive without glasses if your vision is 20/40 or better.

I really hope not obviously - he has so many other issues (Special needs) that I was hoping his vision would be ok. On top of that though - he has sensory issues - glasses will be a nightmare for him to get used to.

For my own sanity - this will be an issue if he does need them - if he doesn't like something he will hide it from me. Like his speech folder - which he hid last week and I found Friday behind the downstairs toilet... (I usually put his backpack on the top shelf of the closet but he beat me to it that day) Unless I get him day glow glasses with flashers on them - I would imagine they may be a bit harder for me to locate if he tries to hide them......:scared1:

:)

I thought we would have a tough time getting our DC to wear his glasses (sensory issues as well). However, his vision was bad enough that it was never a problem. Within a couple of hours of seeing clearly he was over it.

Now if I could only get him to eat more than 7 different foods.

Well I would certainly hope so, as my corrected vision is 20/30 in one eye and 20/40 in the other. It does wonders with my depth perception. :3dglasses

Do you think your son would be more comfortable with contacts?? I know several kids in my daughter's elementary class had to get glasses, and by 4th grade most of them were in contacts. I'm just wondering if it would be better or worse for the sensory part. Don't write them off just because he's young - ask the eye doctor for ALL your options.

One thing our eye dr told me is that kids that really need glasses wear them more often then not. It is the borderline kids that have the issues wearing them--will wear them sometimes but not all the time. DS12 has had glasses since 1st grade and we have never had to tell him to put on his glasses. I don't know the 20/whatever but his prescription is -5.75 in both eyes, WAY worse then mine and I can't even make out the big E on the chart.

The sensory issues might be different but if you can find some titanium frames (they are pretty flexible and VERY lightweight) you might not have issues.

DS has never been teased for wearing glasses. I don't think that really happens much any more because the glasses they have these days are actually attractive vs those big, thick ugly plastic frame that only came in pink or blue when we were kids.

I doubt it with the contacts. His is hypersensitive - things that don't bother most people bother him a great deal. Cutting his hair is a 2 person job and he cries that I am hurting him. (Too hard to take him to a salon so I buzz him myself) Contacts in his eyes would probably send him over the edge :)

DH got out all the sunglasses for everybody and we ate dinner with them on as a game - he lasted about 5 minutes before he had to take his off but 5 minutes is a big thing for him. We'll just keep playing that game every night. Of course I had to turn EVERY dang light on so I could see my plate but maybe that's not such a bad thing. Can't eat what I can't see - LOL :)

If he ends up not needing glasses at least we'll have fun in the meantime.

DD's vision tested 20/40 at the pediatrician's office at her 7 year old well visit. He said that is the point that they refer them to have their eyes tested further. She ended up being 20/40 and the doctor gave her glasses but said she only really needed them for reading and school work. A year later and her vision was 20/20.

when ds had to get them a couple of years ago we took pains to find ones he realy like (power rangers logo in the corner and on the specs case) and to play into his love for superheros (told him with the glasses he like superman could have his own 'secret identity':rotfl2: ).

Well DS had his appt Saturday and all is fine. He has perfect 20/20 vision. :) He had so much fun at this appointment as they made him "swat" pretend flies so now he wants to go back and play more games - LMAO!

Thanks for all your help. We're so glad that SOMETHING turns out well for DS. :)
