2 yo attacked by alligator at Grand Floridian

When will people learn? Signs are posted throughout the resorts, yet people still do it. Now tragically a toddler has lost their life. Before it even started.
What are your thoughts on changes coming to water areas throughout the properties? How does Disney possibly combat possible loss of life or law suits in the future because of this tragic incident?

For years and years guests swam in the waters of the seven seas lagoon and bay lake prior to "no swimming" signs going up. how many of us have gone to River country in our lives? I've swam in bay lake as a kid and remember the alligator nets (I didn't know that's what they were then). This man made lake/lagoon has been here for 45 years and never before has anyone had this happen to them. this is a horrific event and I can't imagine what this family is going through. I personally believe that a child wading in the water is different than swimming in the water and of course if the family had any warning that their child could fall prey to a gator by just putting his feet in the water then they wouldn't have let him stand in the water. But this had never happened at Disney before and we know Disney is vigilant about removing gators from guest areas. Well, now those signs warning of gators need to go up on the beaches. Sadly too little to late for this family.

I too grew up in the 70's swimming in the lagoon. However, we must remember that alligator populations were extremely low in the 70's since they were hunted almost to near extinction. They were not put on the endangered species list until 1967. The populations have now fully recovered, and of course the additional human encroachment on their natural habitat is making confrontations with the gators more likely.

I first came to South east Georgia in the Late 70s and we had a few . Now we have them everywhere.

Just saw on WSVN (7) That a boy was pulled into the lake outside the Grand Floridian! being reported on channel 7 WSVN south florida

Yes, a very sad situation.

I'm going to merge this thread with one already in existence on the same topic.

How awful. I can't imagine what the parents are going through. Keeping them in my prayers. What a tragic week.

The most alarming comment I saw on Facebook this morning were the people who didn't understand why Disney "allows" gators in the water. I saw comments saying this or something similar many times this morning. People just don't realize that there can be a gator in any water in Florida including a puddle or a swimming pool.

Another issue is the "Disney Bubble". People expect Disney to control the weather and the wildlife.

When that Grandma had the heart attack after seeing the boy get bit by a snake that "got loose" at AK, I wondered, How exactly does a wild animal get loose?

Especially since bay lake is a natural lake which seven seas lagoon is connect to. Gators have been there far longer than Disney has been.

Ok so this might be a bit gruesome but let's say at this point the gator got the kid... Do gators have the ability to digest everything from a body to the point no bones are found or will there be remains left if found?

As mangled as the body might be if that's the case I hope they find the kid. I couldn't imagine not being able have a funeral without a body

I just hope that isn't another area that has faced the budget ax. It's fair to question if they cut resources in that area of their operations to save a few bucks. Afterall, they have made cuts it in practically every other aspect of their operations.

What a horrific week Orlando has been having.
I can't even imagine...
I read the parents jumped in the water and tried to pry the gators mouth open :(
