Has anyone here had put their 2 year old in a gymnastics class?

Out local YMCA offers classes for 2 years and up. They are separated by age. It say in those young years they focus gorss motor skills, eye foot coordination, self-esteem, etc.

I think it would be great for DD. I have tried to call today, but no one has answered yet. We will probably try to watch a class to see what we think, but I think DD would love it.

Has anyone else had a child this young in gymnastics? What were your experiences?

Thanks. :)

Jenn Lynn:

So, you're from "Badgerland" ... does that mean Wisconsin?

My DD has taken gymnatics classes at the local (Madison, WI) YMCA and loved it. She did one class called "Let's Get Physical" when she was 2 and then Gymnastics when she was 3. I signed her up for Ballet this fall :).

Robin-Yes I am in Wisconsin. Farther north than Madison though!

I have checked around for dance classes and things for 2 year olds, but most start at age 3.

Little girls in Tu-tus are so cute! :)

I did gymnastics for 14 years, so of course I'm going to say yes. :D

Gymnastics is great when you're little... it's so much fun. At her age your daughter won't be doing anything you'd think of as "gymnastics"; it's more to develop basic motor skills like running, jumping, climbing, swinging, etc. I personally think it'd be great for any kid, and it doesn't hurt that she'll be burning off some extra energy ;)

I would recommend that you pay a visit to the class, and see if your daughter would do well in it. If parents aren't allowed into the gym (gyms have different rules on this), will she be okay being away from you for the length of the class? Will she wait her turn in line and listen to her instructors? Thos are probably the two biggest issues I saw with little kids at my gym. Also pay attention to the student-teacher ratio, and make sure that someone is spotting the kids anytime they're doing a skill.

I hope you decide to let her try it if she wants to. It's a great sport. Just hope she doesn't get as hooked on it as I did :p

My daughter does gymnastics. They usually have Parent & Tot classes for those ages.

.. and the parents usually have just as much fun as the kids ;)

Hey Mickey-Yes, the burning of energy would be great! Especially in the winter! ;)

I think DD will be fine without me for a class period. As for waiting in line, she has never really had to do it. But when she has been around other kids and adults, other than DH and myself, she becomes a bit more reserved and tends to listin better. :p

What is a good teacher/student ratio?

A parent/tot class would be fun too. We have done parent/tot swimming lessons and have really enjoyed them. :)
