Disney dining, how I do love thee. How thou hast charmed and beguiled me through swift passing years, how thou hast drawn my thoughts to thyself across miles and months as we have been apart. Thou art a temptress, teasing my mind with vivid imaginings and treasured remembrances. Thou art a beacon, illuminating the hope of future delights, and thou art a friend, walking with me in challenge and pleasure.

Are you beginning to get the idea that I am very, very fond indeed of Disney dining? Obviously it can cause me to wax poetical, but I promise to stop with the waxing and get on with the storytelling, the story of the dining adventures of 2 empty-nester vegetarians who spent 7 nights in January on free dining, with 2 bonus nights on the end.

DH and I married off our only child back in October. Her wedding was almost immediately followed by a huge family crisis involving the health and well being of my elderly parents. That situation has started to settle itself down a bit, and we decided that early January would be a dandy time to get away on the first vacation we've had in almost 2 years.

We booked free dining for 7 nights at Pop Century, which translates to the Quick Service Dining Plan. We contemplated upgrading it to the regular DP, since we knew we wanted to eat a table service meal most every day, but we did the math with the way we were likely to order, and it came up about $100 cheaper to just pay out of pocket for all our table service meals, the best we could figure.

By the way, we have only been full-time vegetarians for about 6 months, although we have eaten mostly vegetarian for about 3 years. This was our first completely veggie trip to WDW.

And now, gentle reader, enough with the background info, and on with the reviews!

Let me get the most boring part out of the way first - Everything Pop, the ubiquitous food court at Pop Century. We had 5 breakfasts, one dinner, and a number of snacks there, but let me confess right now that we did not take a single photo of anything we ate there. I think the chaos of the place just drove all thoughts of artistic endeavors clean out of our overloaded craniums.

That is not to say that EP is without merit. It does a good job at the Herculean task it faces each day of feeding the teeming masses that thunder through its doors on their hurried way. There are just SO MANY of those teeming masses that the place very often feels like a zoo. An efficient enough zoo, with decent food, but a zoo nonetheless.

Our first morning there we each had a cheese omelette, which came with some fried potatoes. They were fine, nothing special, but adequate fuel for the day ahead. The second morning we switched to bounty platters, asking for extra eggs in place of the meat. By the third morning, the effects of the dining plan were starting to kick in, and we began splitting a bounty platter each morning. DH took the french toast sticks, I took the biscuit, and we split the eggs and potatoes. One morning we used a snack credit and added a fruit cup on the side. One morning we only used snack credits and each got oatmeal, which was not surprisingly, even less exciting than the bounty platters. However, none of it was bad, and it filled our bellies and got us started on our day. All was well.

The one evening meal taken here consisted of 2 veggie burgers with fries. They were on par with the breakfasts, ok but nothing special. DH paid OoP for one of those little bottles of White Zinfandel to go with his. He picked up a cheesecake to take back to the room, while I opted to get my receipt stamped for ice cream after the meal. I was too full to eat my ice cream immediately, but the receipt stamp said I could come back for it any time in the next 90 minutes. I went to the room for a shower, and sent hubby back down for my sundae while I was in there. I really do wish I had remembered to take a photo of the beast he came back with so you could see it, gentle reader. It was easily enough ice cream for a family of 4, with brownies and whipped cream thrown in for good measure. THAT was a true bargain, and it was delicious, although I didn't come anywhere near finishing it.

One more outstanding bargain was the snack I had DH pick up for me and bring back to the room on another evening. It was just a humble side of fries, but they were absolutely delicious, and again, a huge portion. At least 3 times the amount we were served at couple of different counter service places in the parks where we also ordered a side of fries.

That takes care of Everything Pop. My reviews will be including visual proof starting with the very next one!

Day One

Hello again, gentle reader. This was our first full day, not counting travel day.

After our hearty but forgettable breakfast at Pop Century, we were off for a lovely morning at the Animal Kingdom. We were looking forward to using some snack credits on something decadent, and a midmorning snack at the Kusafiri Coffee Shop was just the ticket.

We opted for a Paw Print Brownie to share. Two bites in, we knew we were up against something so sweet that we had to obtain a coffee to go with it before our teeth ached themselves right out of their sockets.

I am ashamed to admit up front just how many photos you will be seeing in this report that were taken at some point after the first bite, but there it is, once a bite is gone you can't get it back, or at least you wouldn't want to, now would you.

As you can see from this already started-on cupcake, the layer of white frosting is thick enough to keep you warm in a winter storm, should you choose to spackle yourself with it. It came with an adorable little paw print of dark chocolate pieces arranged on top, but DH had already eaten part of the paw before we ever reached our table in the Dawa Bar seating area, so we tried to rearrange the remaining pieces the best we could for the photo.

After those outstandingly sweet first bites, while DH was on his quest to obtain the swill that passes for coffee at WDW, I occupied myself with scraping most of the white frosting off and smearing it on the side of the plate. This resulted in a change for the better, and we both enjoyed the cupcake after that.

Two short hours after the sickly sweet Paw Print Brownie came the moment we had been waiting anxiously for - our return to our beloved Tusker House for lunch.* I would imagine that this oasis of imaginative and nontypical buffet food would be a treat for anyone, but for those of us of the veggie persuasion, it is nothing short of a dream come true.

Gentle reader, I have another confession to make (and so soon!* look how close we've already become!).* I hate photos of plates of food from buffets.* They never look appetizing to me.* I think they suffer greatly in comparison to the skillful presentations that most WDW restaurants send out of the kitchen, and why wouldn't they, since all we do is pile our plates willy nilly with everything that catches our eye.* Nonetheless, we did photograph our food at TH for you viewing "pleasure", just in case you really do want to see it.

I cannot begin to tell you which plate was whose, but on reviewing the photos, I was shocked to discern what piggies we were this day!* Apparently we each had three full plates, followed by a number of those tiny little desserts.

P1060020.jpg

This first plate has some veggie couscous, a wholegrain roll with dried fruit, swiss cheese, cucumber and tomato salad, hummus, and some crispy flatbread.* All yummy.* Yummy yummy yummy.

P1060022.jpg

This one has some of the same beautiful, beautiful items, along with some caesar salad, a bit a pita for the hummus, and some dreamily good fruit chutneys, which paired beautifully with the flatbread.

P1060023.jpg

Now you see some samosas with a mango salsa (if you're having the samosas, please do yourself a favor and try the salsa with them, you'll be glad you did).* They were joined by a couple of more pedestrian items, roasted potatoes and green beans (both fine, but you can do much better here at Tusker House), some orzo pasta with veggies, a yellow rice, and a tofu and veggie dish, which you can barely see peeking out at the top of the plate.* The orzo had a lovely fresh flavor, and was a favorite item.

P1060025.jpg

We're finally slowing down a bit.* Here you see some repeats from the more salad-y section - that refreshing cucumber and tomato salad with the lovely creamy dressing, a bit more of the luscious hummus with pita, and the fruit chutneys with the flatbread.

P1060026.jpg

Ok, forget what I said about slowing down.* More samosas with salsa, more roasted potatoes and green beans, more of the tofu dish, a pearl pasta, and a hunk of grain bread with a dollop of butter.

We do have pictures of our desserts, but they turned out so very blurry that I am not going to impose them on you.* I will just tell you that there was a spice cake, lemon square, baklava, strawberry mousse in a tiny chocolate cup, and bread pudding with a vanilla sauce.* All were good, but couldn't quite live up to the glory of the savories that preceeded them.* Or maybe we were just reaping the reward we had sown in gluttony, rendering us very much too full to appreciate any of the bites we had of the sweets.

Just writing down this remembrance is making me so homesick for Tusker House.* This place is the stuff of my dreams during the long dry spells between visits.* If you are a vegetarian, or even if you're not, please give my beloved TH a try, and think of me when you do.* I promise I'll be thinking of you.

As a recently new vegetarian, I look foward to reading your reviews.
