2 rental cars instead of a minivan?

I was looking at weekly rates for a minivan and it looks like it would be cheaper to get 2 intermediate rental cars instead. We'll have 3 adults and 3 kids in carseats. Besides the increased gas cost, any downsides? We have APs, so both drivers will get into the parks for free. Do hotels allow you to park 2 cars? Would love to hear if anyone has ever done this!

Make sure you add in the other charges like taxes, airport recovery fee and surcharges. This can add 15% to each rental

As dvc guy mentioned, be sure to factor in the taxes. Florida has a tire/battery surcharge of 2.05 per day and a licence recoupment fee of .49 cents per day. This will be paid per car so over a week it can be around an additional $18.00 for the extra car. Have you tried mousesavers.com to see if you can apply any codes and get a better rate on a van?

Check with your insurance agent to be sure that insurance would cover both vehicles if you rent and decline coverages. Some policies will only extend to one rental vehicle at a time.

When our 2 kids were younger my husband and I always rented our "own" cars. It just made it easier for our familiy. When our youngest child was tired and not too interested in being out for the day 1 parent took her back to the resort in one car. The other parent and older child could stay as long as they wanted and not have to worry about being picked up because they had their own car. It really worked out well for us. Now that our kids are older and both love being at Disney ALL day we just rent a mini-van!
