2 one way reservations or 1 return?

Hey.
I am looking at flights for march from buffalo and think that if the date I want out comes available before the return date should I just book the outbound flights now and then later make a reservation for the return flights?
Is there any reason not to do this?
I see some great prices and would hate to lose out on the cheap rates for the departure waiting for the return dates to open.
Does this make any sense....I know I am over reacting but I see cheap fares and for once would like to get them.

I think there's a tax you might pay double on, but you're talking a difference of $10, when that one way flight might raise much more than that. I've booked 2 one-way flights before, usually going down on one airline and coming home on another...
