If I have 2 “active” magic bands when I check into a resort can they both be used to get into my room? If not how does the resort designate which one will be used??

Yes. You should be able to use any bands that are active on your account. Sometimes you may need the front desk to reset it, but they should work.

The band is not your room key in the traditional sense. YOU have entitlements to open the room. Your magic bands are all associated to YOU.

The door scans the magic band being used, the system looks up who that band is registered too. if they have a valid reason to enter that room, access is granted. It is all part of a relationship database. No info is stored in your magic band about you or your entitlements.

If, like me, you have 20 magic bands, every one of them will open your room. That is why it is a good idea to deactivate any bands you have lost, or know you will not use any ore.

We take 1 band to use, and have one as a back up per person in case it is lost. The rest form a nice daisy chain hanging from the closet rod in our home.

Thanks also taking a back up! You just never know!

I have what seems like 30 active MB. I've gotten just about one of every design ever released, aside from a few limited release ones. I collect them to use to match any outfit I wear. I don't bring them all but I bring at least one per day, more if there's a planned outfit change for a given day. So yeah, you can use any band you've ever been issued. Sometimes I run in to an issue where a given band won't open a given door but that's an easy fix. The front desk, or concierge desk, can fix the issue. They just have to ensure the serial number on the band is activated in that resort's database. Though now, if the band doesn't open the door, I just use my phone. I use the band in the parks and I don't worry about trekking to the desk to fix it unless I happen to see no line as I'm walking by and I have the band with me.

We usually bring several MBs each to switch up throughout the trip. Usually they all work fine. If you have trouble unlocking the room with it you can always stop by the front desk and they'll fix it.
