So I have been researching purchasing DVC and I either keep confusing myself or come up with more questions and was hoping for some help. I was thinking rather buying one larger contract buying 2 smaller contracts at different resorts with same use year. This would give me a little more ease if able to book these resorts 11 months out rather then the 7 month window. My question is this...... I read you can transfer points one time or once a use year so If I purchase 150 points at AKL and BLT and decided I was definitely going to stay at BLT then can I transfer the points from AKL over to My BLT contract and book a room with 300 pts at BLT 11 months out???? I know about borrowing and banking but was curious if that would work as well? Any help would be greatly appreciated and I hope this question makes sense!!!! Thanks in advance!!!

If you purchase two different home resorts with the same UY, they will fall under a single membership as long as they are titled the same.
You can't transfer points between different home resorts that fall under the same membership. Even if you could transfer the points, they would retain their original home resort & UY.

There is no way at all to turn AKV pts into BLT pts. You are confused.

If you own 150 BLT pts, you can bank and borrow from that contract to book BLT with up to 450 pts every third year. But pts from any AKV or other resort contract cannot be used to book BLT until 7 months out.

You can't cheat the home resort preference.

Ok thanks for the information... I was not trying to cheat anything but rather trying to understand banking, borrowing, transferring, etc ..... it was a question that came into my head and I've seen a lot of good information and advice on here so just figured I would ask...... again thanks for responding

The power to book a particular resort more than 7 months from check-in is tied to the points. If you want to book BLT 11 months out, you need enough BLT points to pay for that reservation. They can be current, banked, borrowed and/or transferred BLT points but they must be BLT points. As erionm stated, if you transferred in some AKV points into your membership, they would still be AKV points and could not be used to book BLT more than 7 months from check-in.

I think the confusion comes in because people talk about being able to book your home resort 11 months out. That's only true if you have enough points from that resort in your account, valid for your dates of stay. I own BWV but I can only book there 11 months out if I have enough BWV points to pay for the reservation at the time I make it. Owning at BWV doesn't allow me to use my AKV points or any other non-BWV points to pay for that reservation.

Kudos to you for doing your homework before deciding to purchase! It can take a while to get up to speed. There is lots of good information in the threads here, and friendly and helpful people willing to answer questions. We were all newbies once ourselves.

Thanks for this detailed explanation!!! We are soon to be a family of 6 so I want to make sure I have a clear understanding of how DVC works (obviously) plus with a lot of the threads I've been reading stating it's been getting harder to get certain rooms or resorts 7 months out I just wanted to make smart decisions. First rule I've written down is purchase where you want to stay not based on price!!! I'm now working on the rest of my rules before I purchase and please don't even get me started on use Year lol ...... but seriously thanks for taking the time to respond !!! Very much appreciated!!! I'll get it eventually hahaha

That's a great first rule. Use year understanding simply comes after repetitive beating into your brain :). It is easy to get confused on all the rules with banking, borrowing, transferring etc. Looks like you got some good answers above regarding your initial question.

To add, owning 2 home resorts to get the 11 months window can be a great choice but it does come with some cost. Unless you want value or concierge, I doubt AKV will every be overly difficult to get at 7 months but it might require using the wait list at times. There are several ways to approach using 300 points for a stay in the situation you're inquiring about. Just remember once you borrow or bank, the points are in that UY forever until the end of the UY and they expire if not used during that time. 2 of the best ways to do this are to bank/borrow and alternate home resort stays. Another is to minimize banking/borrowing and schedule split stays but try to change to a single resort where available at 7 months out.

Thank you for this information.... In regards to a split stay and then changing to single resort 7 months out I had a question? If I was able to do that would it be considered two reservations? Would I have to check out and check back in at same hotel? Sorry if these are stupid questions!!! Thanks in advance

I'm not absolutely sure how it work in this situation from a stay functionality standpoint. I'll let others offer direct experiences rather than say how I think it'll work. I am certain it won't be an issue though.

Does anyone remember the old days of point morphing?
I do - and I am very glad they are gone. With the increase in renting, can you imagine the chaos / upset/consternation there would be if it were still possible? I can imagine DVC the subject of a class action law suit and maybe a huge fine from the state of Florida for "overselling" a timeshare resort.

What do you mean by point morphing?
Remember when we could transfer points an unlimited number of times? And when the home resort somehow got "lost" when the transaction was complete? There were several members with BWV accounts who actively sought point transfers from the less in demand resorts (such as OKW, VB, HH, etc.) and then used those points to,reserve BWV villas (for example) before the 7 month window opened. (They were renting to others even back then). The practice became known as "point morphing" -i.e., magically changing non-home resort points into home resort points. DVC eventually started limiting transfers to one per membership per use year, either into an account or out of it but not both in the same year. They later updated their procedures/ software to keep track of original home resort and use year, thus eliminating the practice. (The rules didn't allow the practice, but the system allowed it , so some did it anyway).

(Dean - I'm betting you remember now, but there are many posters/DVC Members who weren't here when all that was going on).

History session over. :teeth:

You can absolutely combine those reservations into 1. Let's say you booked a standard at 11 months 3 nights at BLT Mon, Tues, Wed. Then at 7 months by some miracle Thurs, Fri, and Sat were available at BLT in a standard. You could book that reservation online with your AKL points. Then at some time in the future you can call member services and have them combine the reservation into 1. This actually saves DVC money as they will not have to clean your original room when you checkout on Thurs and then check back in. I have done this before using points from 3 different memberships. Now what I don't know is if you have the same UY with BLT and AKL under the same membership #, if they will let you take 10 points from BLT and 10 points from AKL and reserve a 20 point room at 7 months.

There was an issue over 10 years ago when transferred points did not retain their original home resort and people were transferring older resorts like OKW points into something like BWV, etc and they were used for the 11 month window for BWV.

I am aware, I just wasn't sure what this was in reference to as posted. Back then one could transfer holding account points and points past the banking deadline and they could be banked up to the last day.
