2 complicated (linked) questions

Well, they may not be too complicated for the experts on here, but I couldn't come up with a snappy title!

The situation...I will soon have a 2 week reservation for my home resort BWV - Standard View in December (please note: in demand reservation which may be relevant?)

Now...in 4 months time (i.e. 7 months out) I would like to try and change PART of that reservation, e.g. the last 4-7 nights for a different resort, ideally a monorail resort / Wilderness Lodge - again both tough to get in December!

Also, and I think this bit might be key...I WILL HAVE USED UP VIRTUALLY ALL MY BANKED AND CURRENT YEAR POINTS WITH THE RESERVATION ABOVE

The questions...

As I understand it there are two ways that I am realistically going to get this 7 month reservation:

1. Go online at 8:00 ET and try to book it if available - BUT in order to make this extra reservation without first cancelling part of my original reservation, it would mean borrowing points - presumably this is not a good idea as this is a one-way transaction? Does this mean I need to wait till 9:00 ET and call MS instead (less likely to get it)? Also, do I risk losing our original reservation (e.g. if someone else has waitlisted it)?

2. Waitlist our two preferences - BUT what then happens if the waitlist comes through? Will they automatically borrow points in order to make it (same problem as above)? Or is there another way to achieve this?

Apologies if I am not making total sense!

Yes, you seem to have it down. There is another option in which you book the days you are hoping to swap at 7 months as a different reservation at 11 months. Then at 7, you will be able to do it online with canceling and rebooking. The risk, is, of course, ending up with nothing that time of year.

Some have had luck with using two browsers and securing the new one first, canceling the old in a different browser, then hitting refresh and the canceled points are there. I have never done it so you'd want to search threads for the exact way.

Other than that, you are waiting to call MS at 9:00 which does limit your changes as it is a popular time.

Thanks, I thought this was the case from what I have read

We do have a "Plan B" which is SSR for the other part - quite like the idea of that with the Disney Springs developments, and I think this should be freely available at 7 months (?)

If we do it the alternative way that you suggest - can we make the original one as one long reservation first, and then ask MS to split it into 2 reservations (e.g. 9 nights / 5 nights)? Thanks

Slight edit:

I've just noticed that the original reservation will cost 177 points, leaving me 23 points current year....this is just enough to book just the FIRST night of my desired second reservation at Poly / BLT Studio (midweek in Choice season)

So, would this work? Go online at 8:00 7 months out, book the first night only....then after 9am (same day) call MS and ask them to cancel the last four nights of the original reservation (or the whole if I split it) and extend the new Poly / BLT reservation to 4 nights with the newly freed up points? Would this work in the same way that I've seen people say that there would definitely be availability for the extra nights as no one can book "my room" for those nights yet? Thanks

No one using the 7 month window could book that room. But if there are two rooms available today but only one tomorrow, someone could gobble up the rest of the reservation you're trying to make. So, that's risky.

Are you having to "walk" to get the current 14-day reservation? If not, you could book the second half with a different name so you have two separate reservations. Then, you could use this trick to grab the room and cancel the reservation at the same time. But this assumes you can get the exact days that match the current reservation.

Thanks again!

I am sort of having to "walk" this original reservation in that I can only book the first 7 nights at first, and then I will need to phone MS up every few days to add on night till I've got the whole 14 (coming from UK!)

I think what I will probably do is split the original reservation, i.e. 10 nights BWV standard (in progress) and then a separate 4 nights BWV Lake View (easier to get, less hassle)

Then at 7 months do the holding / cancelling trick that you've kindly linked above if I can get Poly / BLT for those 4 nights. If these are not available and/or I mess up the trick  I can just call up MS at 9am and book SSR (which I think will be available?) instead for those 4 nights

Does this sound OK?

By the way, are you suggesting using a different name so that DVC don't combine the two reservations without asking me?

If I reserve a Standard View for the first reservation and a Lake View for the second reservation, would that stop them from combining them presumably?

Yes and yes.
