Hi All,

Can you tell I'm in the obsessive planning phase? I have two bike questions for those who bring their own bikes...

1) Are helmets required?
2) Is there a place to park/lock bikes at places such as Crockett's Tavern, the Marina or the Trading Post?

Thanks!

Helmets - Even if they arn't required, why would you get on your bike without putting one on? Averaging 6,000 miles a year on my bike, I see many more recreational bikers, who are on an easy recreational ride, fall and hit their head on the pavement than those who are out for some serious exercise. Please wear your helmet. You can strap it to your bike when not riding. OK, I'll stop now.

As far a locking up your bike, I do not recall seeing bicycle specific racks. However, there was allways a fence or something similar around that you could lock you bike to.

Bicyclemark,

Thanks for the information! I know I should wear my helmet more often. I am also an avid bicyclist as well, but thanks for the reminder. I come from NH where even motorcycle helmets are not required :sad2:

I know that obssessive planning phase only too well! :D We're bringing in-laws who never camp, never vacation, and have never been to DW, so I'm anxious to make this a really nice trip for them.

Back on topic; bicyclemark has convinced me I need a helmet. Any recommendations for helmets for a recreational adult cyclist?

There are bike racks by the pools, TE, the Marina, the Outpost and Settlement bus depots, both trading posts, and perhaps other locations I can't recall at the moment.
I always wear a helmet. Working in a hospital, I have seen far too many people become disabled due to head injuries, and many of them from bikes.

I am a frequent rider, we even do some rail to trail rides. Now this is a true story and I would say it sounds made up, but IT TRULY happened to me right in my own neighborhood. I was not going that fast, I had my helmet on, and a squirrel cuts out in front of me and I swerve, well the squirrel JUMPS and hangs on for dear life TO the bar that is between my legs...REALLY TRUE...well off course I crash and the squirrel scampers off! My head hit the pavement so hard that I dented the foam inside of my helmet...and there was a long scrap on the helmet on the outside. I did not break anything but did wind up going to the hospital and being very sore for a few weeks. The squirrel did not bite me and my helmet held up, I literally saw stars...So please even in your neighbor anything can happen wear a helmet.

just chiming in on the helmet stories....

DH always wears a helmet, thus so does DS5. He thinks it's very cool that Dad wears his, and even tells the neighborhood kids that they aren't being safe. Of course, all the neighborhood kids tell him that he's just little, and they already know how to ride really well, and so they don't need one...etc.

Sooo....when the neighbor kid who was "a big kid (9) and riding really good, of course" crashed into my son right in front our house--DS ended up with gravel stuck in his helmet, and neighbor ended up in the emergency room with stitches! :earseek:

Of course, did anyone learn anything....any other neighbor kids with helmets these days? Nope! :confused3

yes there is a place to stand and lock the bikes. We had 3 bikes and bought one locking chain the would go through all three.
