2 bedroom versus 3 bedroom availability

We are planning our first dvc vacation. One of our friends family is going with us and one other may join (either a group of eight or eleven). We are looking to go over the feb break next year and the availability seems to be getting worse as the seven month mark gets closer. We aren't sure whether the third family will join but the three bedroom availability seems worse than the two bedroom. Am I better off reserving a three bedroom and switching later if they don't join or is two bedroom harder to get closer to the time?

IMHO, Book a two bedroom and a studio for the 3rd family. That way you only have to cancel the studio if they can not come.
There are many more two bedroom units than GVs, so GVs are harder to book.
Have you booked your HR yet? If not do so that way you a reservation so you do not get locked out, then "see" if you can switch resorts if you want too at 7 months.

The 3rd group's indecision should not leave you holding the bag. Agree with PP that you should book 2BR and studio, so that you can easily cancel the studio without additional drama or stress for you. Of course, if you have enough points, you can reserve both rooms and cancel either one later.

When working with guests, get a firm commitment - and make it a serious one. Have them buy their tickets or airfare.

On this board, its fairly common for people to be really interested in going with you, until it comes time to put money into it - then they can't make it. Its also common for people to be really into it - until something better (or more important to them) comes up. It also isn't uncommon for them to suddenly invite guests of their own. Those of us with experience try and make our guest plans either flexible or with people we know will follow through (and often both). We've been four people rattling around a Grand Villa - it was sort of overkill (since our guest died, and his family decided not to go as a result - we didn't really consider that flaking out).

Two bedroom and studio, or if you have the points, two bedroom + one bedroom. With 11 people it would be nice to have a 2nd washer and dryer.

This is great advice. Thanks! This definitely gives us more flexibility and options so I won't end up feeling resentful later if the third couple bails. I feel good about the second couple. She has already taken the time off of work and has been dying to make her first Disney trip. They seem all in. They actually wanted to go this past year but we were already planning a Disney cruise and they really want friends to go with. The third couple is trying to get pregnant so I think that makes all plans a little up in the air for them.

I actually waited too long to book our home resort (Poly) which I am upset with myself about. I should have just done it so now I am watching availability carefully.

Conceiving a child is one of those "more important" things that you can't really consider flaking out - but you do want flexibility just in case.

Yeah I totally don't consider it flaking out. I understand where they are coming from. To be honest, I hope they don't wind up coming with us because I really want them to have their second and they have had a bit of a rough go of it so I am hoping this works out for them. That being said, planning just in case they can make it does limit our options if we are getting a three bedroom so the two bedroom and one bedroom is a great option and gives us better flexibility. I worry the two bedroom options will be limited by the time they will know more definitively so booking this way would be easier.
