Looking to take the family to Disneyland year after next but I don't know anything about the area. We've only ever been to WDW and we only had 3 kids back then. Now we have five (they will be 9, 8, 6, 3, and 2 at time of travel) and I am clueless about where to stay. I would prefer for us to all be in one room, but I'm not sure where we could get a suite for 7. Should I just be resigned to booking two adjoining rooms?? We'll probably go in either September or October if that makes a difference. Oh! And we'll be driving there, so we'll have a vehicle to get around and park.

Desert Inn and Suites can accommodate a party your size. It's across the street from the pedestrian entrance. You may be able to find something farther away though, since you are willing to drive.

We stayed in the 2 bedroom suite at the Residence Inn Maingate in 2011, and really enjoyed it. They have 1 king bed in one room, 2 queens in the second bedroom, and a queen pullout (which was not uncomfortable) in the living room.

We always stay here on our "big" family trip when we travel with in-laws and my mom as well. Their C2 family suite has a total of 4 queen beds and a full sleeper sofa and two full bathrooms. Should work for your group!

we are a family of 5 kids two adults and although we haven't gone yet. We have booked at family suite at desert inn and suites. The location to the resort was perfect and it has 4 queen beds so real bed for everyone We are going the end of January / early february and got the room for 109 a night

To my knowledge BWPPI mini-suites only sleep 6. You can request connecting rooms at Camelot, Tropicana, or ask for a suite at BW Raffles (they have family suites), or Residence Inn Maingate.

Sometimes getting two connecting rooms is less expensive than getting a suite.

We are a family of 10, 8 kids under 14 and are going to try the Desert Inn and Suites in a few weeks. I can update once we go Dec 1-10. We are staying 5 nights here and then moving over to the Grand and staying in the Villas since we are DVC members. Just didn't have enough points for the whole trip. I love the villas because I can cook and save some money that way.

I stayed at the Staybridge Suites during the Christmas of 2010, their 2 bedroom suites will accomodate 7. They have the best continental / hot breakfast I have ever gotten for free in a hotel.
The Residence Inn Maingate also has 3 queen beds plus a sofa bed in their 2 bedroom suites.
The other option is the Residence Inn Garden Grove which is a little farther south on Harbor Blvd. It has quite a few 2 bedroom options with both Queen beds, bunk beds or twin beds and sofabeds. The residence inn's only go up to 6 persons on the drop down box for reservations, but it will tell you on the checkout page the capacity of the room. Most 2 bedroom suites can accomodate 7 people with the sofabed.
Also if you book a Residence Inn, be sure to buy a Marriott Gift Card before December 31 to take advantage of the 10% bonus money promotion they have running now. It adds 10% to the value of the card for free. The cards never expire and can be used just like cash at checkout. You can also use them as partial payment with a credit card at checkout. Basically using them will take 10% off your rate so for example: a $500 hotel reservation would only cost you $450.
