Me (38), DS (8), Debbie (aunt-who-is-more-like-my-sister), Dad, and Newley, Dad's guide dog. The humans in the group are WDW vets.

Resort: All-Star Movies

The Good:

Crowds were very light for most of the trip, but that is why we go in early Feb. A 15 min. line is waaaayyy too long for us. :)

Newley had an absolute ball, but also worked harder than I think he has had to yet. He was quite the pooped pooch at the end of each day. 99% of the people were so good with him... always asking Dad first if they could pet him and whatnot. He was quite the center of attention.

We love that WDW is the only place where you can have both the comforting sense of familiarity, knowing what's around every corner, and yet still get to experience that feeling of wonder around every corner. I don't know of any other place where those two things aren't mutually exclusive.

I am a huge Beauty and the Beast fan... and I was the only grownup in line to greet Belle and The Beast. LOL The CM and I had been chatting about pins; he told them I was their biggest fan, and that I had two pages of Belle pins in my pin case, and Beast gave me a huge hug and made my day. :goodvibes

The highlight of the trip, though, was when Newley got to meet Pluto. I had asked a CM where Pluto was going to be, because we wanted a picture of him and my father's guide dog, and he smiled and said "Go stand by that tree over there." So we dutifully trooped over to this lonely tree about 100ft away, and wondered if we were in the right place.

A few minutes later, some characters started coming down the castle ramp, Pluto among them. He headed off in our direction, and then spotted Newley. He put his paws up to his face in surprise, and then he actually got down on all fours and crawled over to Newley. They touched noses, and Newley gave him a slobbery yellow lab kiss, and it was just so adorable. Pluto must have spent a good 10 minutes interacting with Newley, and we had drawn quite a crows at that point, with camera flashes going off all over the place. I hope my own pictures come out. :)

We got to see Spectromagic for the first time, and loved it. Afterwards, we hopped the monorail to the Poly to go watch the Electric Water Pageant. We were lying on the beach chairs, waiting for it to start, when Wishes happened to start just then. It was the BEST view of the fireworks I have seen yet. Just gorgeous. It was a wonderful, unexpected bonus.

The Bad:

If I ever see a green wall again, I think I might throw up. They are *everywhere.* I have never seen so much of WDW under rehab at once. I know it's for the big brouhaha that starts in May, but really, couldn't they have spaced this stuff out a little better?? I'm not talking about just the rides that we all knew were going to be under rehab -- those green walls are just everywhere, from the Lego place at DTD (oh, was my son happy about THAT... he had talked about going back there for weeks, and was so excited. Thanks, Disney.)

There were walls at resorts, walls at attractions not listed, just stupid green walls everywhere. Bleh.

Bus service seemed spottier than in February trips past... I don't remember having to wait so long, or seeing so many packed-to-the-rafters buses in early February before.

I hope Jennifer and Dave yank the Tiffany Towncar coupon and their endorsement from the Passporter, but that's a whole other story.

Confirming, re-confirming, and having the CM's at CRO (or whatever they are calling themselves now) repeat -- on several occasions -- the exact special needs requests you gave them, apparently means nothing. We will actually be writing a letter over that one.

Bottom Line:

We had an awesome, fun trip, as always, and we never let the aggravations ruin anything for us. We deal with them when we get back. :)

But I have to say, at least for DS and I... as much as we love WDW, it isn't the Disney Magic. :( :( :( After the past 3 February's on that floating dream, we got all choked up this time whenever we would see one of those sleek DCL buses. We miss it so BAD. :( I never feel like I need another vacation to recuperate from the vacation after we are on the Magic. And you develop a sense of family on the ship, seeing the same people every day and getting to know them, that is like a big hug every time I think about it.

We love WDW!! And we had a fabulous time. But for DS and I, I think we're going to have to find a way to get back on that ship next year. :)

Once you get pictures of Newley and Pluto, I would love to see them. Sounds like it was a very magical moment.

I would also LOVE to see a photo of Newley and Pluto! That must of been adorable to see! Thanks for sharing!
:goodvibes

I think I got to see you! I was sitting at MGM when your family and dog walked by. I remember thinking how much work the parks must be for a guide dog, and how he looked like he was taking it all in stride. I wondered what his impression of all of it would be, if only dogs could talk!

I think I saw you too!! I saw a man walking with a guide dog! I was there this past week also and agree with the green wall thing..I hated seeing all that green!! I was like you and thought that the 15 min. lines were wayy to long..haha! Hope you had a good time, I did! Can't wait to go back!! :earsboy:

about the Tiffany Town car, did you take them? If so who drove you?? We had a very interesting drive with them both ways.......

I have used Tiffany Towncar before, and the actual driving part is great. The problem is with their reservations system, and their attitude, which is why I won't use them again.

I had made my reservation online, and put explicit details about us being 3 adults, 1 child, and a service animal. Printed out my happy little confirmation, everything was a-ok. A week before the trip, I called to re-confirm everything, and was told "Oh, we can't fit 4 people and a dog in a towncar. You'll have to be in a van, for $100-something dollars."

When I asked why no one had bothered to tell me this before, when I had so carefully explained everything out, I was told "That goes to reservations, and they don't pull them up until the day before for scheduling." What?!? What company doesn't even look at a reservation until the last minute?? What if I hadn't happened to call??

I complained very loudly, and was finally told that we could have the van at the towncar price. But their whole attitude was that they were doing us some huge favor... when they should have at least skimmed over the ressie when it came in and called me. But even that would have been BS, because we could have all fit just fine in that car. The dog just lies on the floor. And then, when I presented my Passporter coupon for Tiffany Towncar, he wouldn't accept it because they had done such a huge favor for me by accepting my ressie in the first place, I guess!! So unbelievable...

Even more amazingly, when I called Happy Limo (whom I have also used before,) I was told "We don't transport animals at all." I blinked and reiterated that this was a guide dog, and was told the same thing. After I told the girl nicely to please go back and tell her idiot boss to go Google "ADA laws," she did and came back to grudgingly say that okay, they would allow him (!!!) but that we would have to have a van at **$200+** dollars.

I guess they call it Flori-DUH for a reason, if they are that clueless about service animals... wonder what the Mears driver would have done if we booked with them? Told us we needed to charter a plane to ASMo? lol

Still haven't gotten my film developed, but I will post pics of Newley and Pluto as soon as I have them!

thanks for posting - please post the pictures of Newly when you can - that sounds so cute!

Finally got the pictures back that I took! Here is a rather wary Newley meeting Pluto for the first time. :)

it is so wonderful to see the doggie and pluto and your dad too.......just wonderful.......thanks for letting us see them too

Thanks so much for the trip report and the pictures!!! I was really excited to see your report because I have a six year old son who is totally blind and loves Disney. We have gone twice and he has just used his cane or a stroller, but eventually when he is older I hope he is able to get a guide dog and I was really interested to hear about your trip w/ a guide dog and your fathers perspective on the parks etc....Thanks Again!!!!

When we were about to leave ASMo to come home, a little blind Iranian girl and her mother came up to meet Newley. The little girl couldn't speak any English, but she was so enamored with Newley... and it was so sweet to see. Dad told me that they don't give guide dogs to anyone under age 12, which I didn't know.

Newley went on almost every ride with us, except for Test Track and RnRC, and he loved them all. Most of the time he just went to sleep on the floor of the ride car -- but the exception was Snow White. For some reason, he just *loved* that ride! He was looking at everything, and just fascinated. Go figure. LOL

Disney has to be the most accomodating place in the known world for people of any DISability... they were just all so nice and helpful. But I think we were much more excited at Newley meeting Pluto than he was. :teeth:

Glad you all liked the pictures!

Love the photos! How cute is Newley? I love that even hard working Newley got a little bit of the Disney magic.
Be glad that I wasn't there while you were on vacation, otherwise you'd be wondering who that crazy gal was following you everywhere giddily enjoying watching Newley on the rides. Oh, I'm a doggie kook.

Gina-- I really agree w/ you about how accomodating the people at Disney are to people w/disabilities. We have gone twice w/our son, and each time I am amazed at how wonderful they treat our son, it is wonderful. As if we needed more incentive to want to go to Disney, but that really makes us and our son feel the"Magic" even more. He is borderline obsessed already w/ Disney and he can't wait to go back. When we went the last time it was hard for our d/d 3y/o & (sighted) to realize why the characters let our d/s touch them so much and she thinks she can do it also--which is fine, until she ended up almost ramming her hand down Chip/Dale's throat----OOOPS!! ONce again I loved your post because not many people I know can relate!!! I had heard that it was 16yrs. old before you can get a dog, 12yrs. old would be even better!!! But I know it is a major responsibility!!!!

Best wishes to you and also your dad... I told my son all about Newley and he was very interested....He already talks about what he would name his dog and he wants to name it Woody-like from Toy Story--he is his favorite...

I believe that guide dogs are named already when you get them. I know both of my friend's were. She is on her second guide dog.
I understand the fascination of people with guide dogs. We took Kimball to the zoo Monday and people were paying more attention to her than the zoo animals. Her son, our main reason for going had a blast. Someday I want to bring them to Disney. Her first dog went with her on her honeymoon and rode all but the roller coasters as well.

What wonderful pictures!

Thank you for such a special trip report. You have provided me with great information to pass along to two families that will be very interested in your reports also!

Talkinghands is correct -- the dogs are already named. They begin training them when they are just a few weeks old!

If anyone has any specific questions about traveling with a service animal, feel free to ask away. My dad is a DIS-er too -- his handle here is trovello. He'd love to hear from people! He was upset that people saw him and Newley all over the place, but no one ever went up and said they were DID-ers also... heh...

And Dad just told me that he *thought* the age was 12, but it's more like 18 when they will provide someone with a service animal. I guess I can understand why... I can't imagine having had that sort of responsibility when I was a teenager! And these animals are so much more of a responsibility than just your average pet. Their feeding times, rest times, all that, are very very regimented.

I got to see Newley today for the first time since we got back from WDW... I'm not sure who was more excited, me or him. :) He seemed awful happy to have his "herd" back, since all 4 of our Disney gang was there today!
