1st ultrasound later today - I'm sooooo nervous!- Update

I think I am going to have a nervous breakdown if 1:30 doesn't get here pretty soon! I know I'll only feel better if we get to see a healthy looking little baby on the screen (I'm almost at 14 weeks). Please wish me luck that everything is OK.


OK, well I'm back and everything looks fine so far! He looks like a real little baby (I think it's a boy, but of course have no proof yet!). They did a nuchal translucency scan and for a normal 36 year old there is a 1 in 200 chance of having a baby with Down's and my results came back at 1 in 1,396. I know it's no guarantee but I sure felt better! Thanks for all the good wishes!

One piece of advice: if you are a person who normally stays pretty hypdrated - don't drink quite as much water as they tell you!

My best advice for an ultrasound is DON'T PANIC if they seem to find something. I have 2 beautiful healthy little girls and at each of their ultrasounds, they founds something "not quite right" and it turned out to be nothing at a later more high-tech ultrasound.

That's good advice! WHen I went for mine, they said 'Come with a FULL bladder.'. So that's what I did...drinking a one liter Sprite in the hour or so prior to my ultrasound. Boy did I wish I hadn't when she started pushing down on my stomach with the scanner thingie...

But good luck. I'm going to tell you that at this point , you'll most likely be able to see w hat looks like something straight out of that movie Alien: giant eggshaped head, long skinny body and little stumps for arms/legs. Eyes will look lke giant black holes and it'll look rather skeletal. Or at least that's what I thought when we had ou r first sonogram at around 12 weeks. You might be able to see the baby move a little bit if you are lucky.

Nothing quite like seeing the little buddy for the first time, no matter what it looks like. With all 3 kids it was just so cool to know for sure that there was REALLY something in there. Good luck and let us know what you find out!

Good luck to you. I remember my first one, they actually let me go empty my blatter a little before becuase it was to full LOL! I drank so much water beforehand LOL. The hardest part was to go and then have to STOP!! I know, to much info

When I had my ultrasounds I was never told to drink water. My first time I actually asked about it because of the horror stories I had heard. I was told the equipment is so hi tech now(this was in 1996) that they dont need you to have a full bladder anymore. What a relief that was. In fact they even took urine samples right before all my ultrasounds.
