1st timers buying 100 pts via resale?

We are new to the DVC. We have 2 small children (3 1/2 and 18 mos.) We have a pending purchase of 100 pts. at SSR. Are there any drawbacks to purchasing only 100 pts. (via resale market)? Additionally, if we are going through the resale market is it smarter to buy SSR or one of the other resorts?

The only drawback will be that you won't be able to stay as long or as much as you'd like to. Of course the same could be said no matter how many points you buy.

What is "smarter" is really subjective. What's smart for one person may not be for another. I would ask you if you bought SSR because that's where you wanted the most? If the answer is yes, then it was a smart buy. Of course there are many other factors to consider too (like lenght of contract and price).

We bought 100 points at BWV and that is all we own, and we do not regret it at all. We did not want to make that big of an investment and it works out well for us. We have gone two times in "off seasons" that do not require as many points and have stayed Sun through Thur which also requires less points. Also, we own at BWV so we have a standard room option (that is not available elsewhere) that also is less points. So, if you plan it the right way - banking, borrowing, chosing seasons and days of week, etc - I think it is a perfectly smart introduction to DVC and may be all you need. I'd go for it.

As HBC eluded to the first thing you want to ask yourself is what resort do you want to stay at the most and choose that resort (for the 11 month booking window).

Next figure out how many points you need based on the typical time of year and length of stay you desire. You can figure that out here using the DVC Points Calculator (click here)

We just purchased a 190 point contract through the Timeshare Store. We plan on going every other year and since the kids are too old to take out of school for the next few years, we calculated using the summer months as a guide.

For your young family the longer contracts available at SSR may also be a big incentive.

Don't forget that you can also bank and borrow to take a trip requiring up to 300 points. So as long as you don't have to go every year you can stay longer or upgrade your accomodations.

We bought 100 OKW points resale and that's all we own as well. I'd love to buy more at some point - but right now, we don't have enough vacation time available to worry about needing more. With banking and borrowing - we were able to stay for a week in a 1 bedroom in the Fall. It was great. Have fun!

...and don't worry about "point envy" either. After reading about the multi-bazillion point contracts some members have it does make me want to add to our 180pt SSR contract "just cuz".. an extra 100-150points would be dreamy, but with some careful planning you can get some wonderful vacations out of the points you do or don't have.

[SIZE=+0]JimmyDisney, the 150 point minimum only applies if you buy directly through Disney. If you buy through the resale market, you can join DVC by buying as little as 25 points.

We own less than 150 points as well. It can work out well for some families. You can certainly stretch your points by staying in only studios and going on weekdays only. Of course, keep in mind that there is a small chance DVC may reallocate the points chart in the future, so it's always good to have a little bit extra in points. [/SIZE]
