1st Timer-Confused about prices

We are WDW regulars and now want to do a cruise. I've never cruised before and have always heard that cruise pricing is often discounted. When I get onto the Disney site, there is a big range for the listed prices. I know price depends on time of year, itinerary, and category. I'd like to get a better feel for the ACTUAL price that most people are able to get so that I can plan accordingly. I know this is a tough question to answer, and I don't want to be out of line, but I'd like to understand real pricing for a Disney cruise. If the prices on the site are close to the actual price, then at least I know. I just need to know one way or another. Our thoughts are a 7-Night Western Carib. cruise, category 7, in early May (value season). 2 Adults and 2 children under 12.

Any help would be greatly appreciated! Thanks.

I looks like May 8th is the only "value sailing" for the Western. Catagory 8 is 4847.00 including trip ins. and transfers and a cat 6 is 5807.00. Cat. 7's aren't available thru DCL right now. I believe cat. 7's for our Nov. 29, 2003 Eastern didn't become available until about 90 days out. The lest expensive time to book is now. The difference in price between my cat 6 Eastern sailing in Jan. 2003 and Aug. 2003 was about 600.00 for 4 of us.

sardan,

What you can do is go to www.disneycruise.com and click on "reservations." You can put in a dummy reservation and check all the things you want (which sailing, which category, if you want air or ground transfers included, ages of the kids, etc) It will then give you a total for that particular sailing. Or you can go back and change your itinerary or change categories, or see how much it would be if you left the kids at grandmas ;) You are not obligated to buy that cruise. Just get an idea then exit out without clicking "book now"

I ....uh.....maybe once or twice....have used that to just see....like....maybe how much it would cost to squeeze in another cruise. Ok, maybe I do it on a weekly basis..."if I wanted to sail for the WHOLE MONTH of January, what would it cost?" I've also compared the differences between a 7 day cruise and a 4 and a 3 day back to back cruise.

We are booked on the May 8, 2004 western 7 day cruise with two kids under the age of 12 in a category 6. Our total is $4,735. A cat 7 like you wanted will be cheaper than that.

Maybe we'll see you onboard?????

I would suggest getting a quote from DU--just click on their ad on the home page of the DIS.

If you want to find out instant quotes, you can go to www.allseastravel.com They have pricing through the end of 2004. You can look at different sail dates and categories at one time and compare prices very easily without having to wait for someone to call or email you back.
:D

Oh, btw, my May 8th cruise does not include air, ground transfers or insurance. :)

Hey Ohio - Great post! Got quite the chuckle, especially the sailing for the whole month of Jan. A good suggestion on getting the pricing - I hadn't thought about the dummy reservation. I also appreciate you're providing the info so that I can get an idea of pricing. Now I can plan better. We're thinking about the May 8 cruise you're on, so who knows!

GFD - I'll also keep DU in mind for a quote and will probably do this.

Thanks all for the feedback.

sardan,
How old are your "two children under twelve?"

I will have an almost 10 yr old girl and a 7 yr old boy on that sailing. :)

There are lots of sites to play with the prices, even Expedia. But mostly it seems you will get the same price in the end, it mostly depends on WHEN you book, not with whom. Look out for most of the web sites because the port charges and taxes do not show up until the end, and as the number of people in the cabin goes up, so do those charges. However, different companies provide different perks, lots of them will give you credits for each room. We booked with a local cruise expert travel agency and got a $75 credit for a cat 11 and a $100 credit for a category 6. Disney Visa also gives perks, such as interest free for six months, but the fine print can get you. Read about that at:

www.mousesavers.com

We too have been obsessively checking all the prices...uh... maybe once or twice...:rotfl: to make sure we are getting the best deal. Our early booking of our cruise in January seems to have saved us money on the cat 6, but not much difference on the cat 11.

Thanks again for the suggestions and info.

Ohio - our kids are 9 (DD) and 7 (DS). We've been talking it over and it looks like we won't be able to swing a Disney Cruise next year. Back to WDW early May. Gee, that's not so bad either. :)

We're thinking we're on for a cruise in 2005. We can start saving now and be all set. Is the cruise as great as everyone says?

In our opinion the cruise is even better than the parks just because there are limited people on the ship, lots of character time, lots of family time and time to just sit and unwind without a lot of running around like you do in the parks! It is nice to go and have EVERYTHING included (minus tips and excursions of course) but to not have to worry about if we can afford to eat that at this restaurant or having to get PS like you do at the parks. It is nice to have alot of options of things to do and the clubs are great for the kids! The spa is really nice as well and very relaxing!!!

We are a family of 5 going on the May 1 cruise to the E. Carrib. We booked through DU and got 2 connecting cat 8 cabins with an oceanview for 5500 not including transfers, airfare or insurance. We saved about 1100 dollars booking a few months ago with dreams over booking with Disney direct and dreams has given us amazing service each time we have booked with them. Also you only have to give a deposit now of $250 per person and then the balance is due 60 days out from sailing. We make payments every single month on our account with DU and it makes it so much easier at the end when the balance due comes up. We figured out if we payed to stay at a nice WDW hotel for 7 nights, admission to the park for all 7 days, eating out at the hotel or WDW itself it would cost us as a family of 5:

7 nts at Poly for 5 of us is 383.56 x 7 = 2684.92
Park Passes for 5 of us is 5 day park hopper is 217.00 x 2 for adults = 434.00
and 5 day park hopper for the kids is 172.00 x 3 = 516.00

so as of now the rate for the room and the passes is a total of
3634.92 and that is without any food or "entertainment" type things that you might get on a cruise!

Figure that if you only spent 150 per day for food x 7 = 1050.00 that makes your total trip 4684.92 which is only 900 less than the 7 day cruise and that is if you only spent $150 on food for the whole day including drinks, snacks, breakfast, lunch and dinner. We ate at LEAST that much last time but I was going light on the amount! For a few hundred dollars you get a cruise to different islands and Castaway Cay which is amazing!

Just thought I would break it down. I know what it is to feel it is too out of the price range to do it...but if you figure it out per day for like my family of 5 it came to 158.00 per person per day roughly! Pretty good price when you think about all you get!

2005 if you book soon you will get pretty decent rates on since you are over a year out...and then you are right you can save for that year!

Heidi - thanks so much for the breakdown. As we've never cruised before, we're struggling with whether we're 'cruise people' or not. I've been reading this board for some time now and we are very excited to give the Disney cruise a try. One tip I've picked up from this board and in talking with friends who've sailed w/Disney is to go for the 7 night cruise rather than a shorter one. Given that decision is made, now we have to decide Eastern or Western itinerary! Your cost breakdown has really helped us out. It's WDW early May and we're going to contact DU about 2005.
