1st time taking video camera question

I'm taking a video camera this trip. Since I can't lock my luggage, is it ok to take as carry on? Do you know if it will do anything to the film?

It's not mine, so want to handle it with care!!

Film? Hopefully it uses either video tape or a memory card.

Security scanners should not affect your video media.

I would ONLY carry it on. The scanners do not harm your video tape, or any regular speed film for your camera (if speed is above 1000, have TSA hand check it).
