1st Time Making Ressie - Points ?????

Hi all,

I'll be making our first reservation next month for a 08 Sept/Oct trip to AKV - our home resort. Here's my question and a little background:

We will need a total of 221 points. We have 160 per UY (August). I have yet to bank any for this year. Do I need to bank the 61 points we will need for next year before I start calling for my reservation? I don't want to borrow as I know those cannot be returned....on the flip side - if we do not use our points this year and end up banking them all at the end of January, can we then have MS switch the ressie using all our 07 UY points first so we can then bank the leftover 99 08 UY points into 09?

I think I would bank the points from 2007 before you call and make the ressie.

Doesn't MS always take the oldest available points first for a reservation? They should be taking your Aug 07 points to book your trip. They will just do the banking (your 160 '07) while you are on the phone making the reservation. The remaining 61 points will come from your 08 UY

For the newbies: Siince the OP has an August use year, the late September 08/early October 08 trip falls within her 2008 use year. If she doesn't tell MS to bank her 2007 use year points, MS will just make the reservation using 2008 use year points. The CM may ask if she wants to bank and use 2007 points, but I sure wouldn't count on that! And there have been several reports that MS doesn't always use the "oldest available" points first, even though it's a good practice to do so.

The OP can tell MS to bank her 2007 points and then make the reservation on the same call.

It's a good idea to review the status of your points after every transaction before you hang up. Lots easier to fix a discrepancy or misunderstanding when it happens than it is to find it and try to fix it later!

Thanks all for the advice. Since we are unsure if we will need any points before then (still debating using some at DL in January) it seems my best course of action would be to bank all the points and then borrow from my 08 UY if we decide to do any type of trip using points before our planned one...right?

No, probabaly not! Once you bank 2007 points into 2008, you can ONLY use them for 2008 ressies, they can't go backwards. So, if you are going to take a trip before Sept 08 (assuming it would be in your 2007 use year), then you should for now, only bank what you need for that one Sept 08 trip. You have plenty of time to bank once you figure out what other trips you want to take in 07.

Sorry, I had it somewhat straight in my head, but did not translate it well to the question (of course!) - I'll clarify my above statement - if I bank all 07UY and we decide to take a trip I could still borrow 08UY (not the banked 07 ones) correct?

Correct, if you decide to take a trip in your 2007 use year after you have banked your points, you'd be borrowing 2008 points for the trip.
