I am going to take the plunge and overcome my paralyzing fear of flying.
DH and I are going to fly round trip from Chicago to Orlando in September.
To keep my mind occupied on something other than my fear, I want to start thinking about packing. I have no idea what size carry-ons are allowed to be.
Can I pack full size shampoos, conditioners, purell and other liquid items in a checked in luggage? Are their certain size that liquid items such as sunscreen, makeup, etc have to be to be put in your carry on?
How do you all pack for a plane trip? Can I take on board my camera, Ipod, laptop, cell phone?
I am lost and need help! I appreciate it!

Try this site for tips on liquids:
http://www.tsa.gov/311/index.shtm

Check with your airline's web site to find out how big your carry-on should be.

I would definitely keep my camera, ipod, laptop and cell phone on board.

While they limit what you can carry on 3-1-1. You can take full size bottles in your checked bags. I would condider bringing only what you need in a smaller container. Liquids are heavy and you don't want to have to pay extra for an overweight bag. Also put all your liquids in a zip-lock bag to protect the rest of your things in case of leakage.

Thanks so much for the information. I didn't realize that carry on liquids had to be in a 1 quart size zip lock bag. I had gallon size. I thought about the regular size shampoo and conditioner in the checked luggage and then I realized how heavy those bottles really are. We only use about 1/4 of what's in them when we are on a week's trip. I think I will pack smaller bottles.
I appreciate any other tips.

I have no idea what size carry-ons are allowed to be. Airline requirements vary. In general, you are allowed one carry-on suitcase whose dimensions (length + width + depth, including wheels and handles) total 45" or less and one personal item (purse, briefcase, laptop bag, small backpack, etc.) that can fit under the seat in front of you.
Can I pack full size shampoos, conditioners, purell and other liquid items in a checked in luggage? Yes
Are their certain size that liquid items such as sunscreen, makeup, etc have to be to be put in your carry on? Liquids in carry-on bags must be in containers 3 oz. or smaller and all liquid containers must be in a one-quart zip-top bag. Each passenger is allowed one bag of liquid items. Medications, including contact lens solution, can be taken in quantities larger than 3 oz. in carry-on bags, but must be declared to the TSA screeners.
How do you all pack for a plane trip? As lightly as possible.
Can I take on board my camera, Ipod, laptop, cell phone? Yes. Laptops must be removed from your carry-on bag or personal item and sent through the x-ray machine by itself in a bin. Other items can stay in your bags. DO NOT put expensive or irreplaceable items in your checked bags.

Any more questions, just ask!

This is very good and true advice about liquids on planes. In all honesty, on a trip from Chicago to Orlando, which is quite short, I would not take any liquids in my carry on unless it's something you will absolutely need in the time you are on the plane - medication, etc. I never take any liquids on the plane unless I'm flying a long distance flight with multiple legs and might end up stuck somewhere. :)

Yes, you can take your laptop, iPod, cell phone, etc. on the plane with you.

The most important thing you should know is what to do when you get to security at the airport - people in Chicago aren't known for being the most patient and kind at airports and will visibly roll their eyes at you if you hold up the security line in the airport - especially if you travel during a weekday when lots of business travelers are trying to get out.

Here's what you need to know so you won't look like a novice...this is just for getting through security - so you have your boarding pass at this point and your luggage has been checked.

1. Have your boarding pass and your I.D. in your hand when you get in the security line. You will eventually approach a podium where someone will want to see both.

2. When he returns them, you can put your I.D. away, but continue to hold your boarding pass - you'll need it again.

3. As you approach the security screeners, grab a bin (or three...), take off your shoes and put them in a bin. I add stuff from my pockets, etc to the same bin. If you are wearing a hat - throw it in. Same with a belt that has metal.

4. Remove your laptop from the bag and put it in a bin by itself.

5. Place your carry on bag, directly on the belt, don't try to shove it in a bin. If you are wearing a jacket, place that on the belt as well - no need to put it in a bin. I've seen TSA ask people to take them out multiple times. If you do have liquids, they must come out of your bag and go into a bin as well.

6. Make sure your boarding pass is still in your hand and NOT in one of the bins.

7. When you get to the front of the line, wait for the TSA personnel to sort of nod at you or motion you through. Some don't care if you come on your own, but they like people to come through one at a time and I've seen a few employees get really snippy with passengers for not waiting their turn or, god forbid, coming too soon.

8. As you walk through the metal detector, the TSA agent on the other end will have his hand held out. He doesn't want to shake - he wants your boarding pass. Hand it to him. He'll look at it for a second and then scribble something on it before handing it back to you.

9. Stand next to the other end of the conveyor and grab all your stuff - returning it as quickly as possible to your feet and bags.

You made it! Oh, and don't panic if they pull you aside to wave their magic wand at you. If you set off the alarm a few times, they'll do it as a matter of course, but they also choose random passengers - I win that prize a lot. It's no big deal...

A couple of other things I do...

1. I always try to take a bag that I'll be able to fit under the seat in front of me. I hate bothering people to get into the overhead bins during a flight so I bring a back pack or smaller bag that I can shove in front of me. It gives me more flexibility to get my stuff during the flight.

2. When I sit down in my seat, I always take out a book and my iPhone so that I have something to do until we are in the air and I can access my things again. The phone will have to be turned off for awhile, but at least I can make calls until they shut the doors to the plane and then I can read while we wait to take off.

If you are leaving from O'Hare - get there really early, especially if you have an early morning flight. If you are leaving from Midway, you don't need to be there as early - but I'm not as sure about times, I haven't flown out of Midway since I lived in Chicago 7 years ago.

You can pretty much put anything you want in your packed luggage. But, putting liquids into a ziploc or two is a good idea. I've even been known to use a small amount of packing tape on the lids because on one business trip I arrived to find a lovely concoction of shampoo and lotion covering all my clothes - what can I say, I'm just lucky like that! :confused3

You didn't mention what airline you are fliying but remember if you are flying anyone but Southwest then you will pay a per bag checked fee. Fees vary by airline.

If you don't feel like transferring items to smaller bottles just set aside your regular products when they are nearing empty and then just discard the bottles when you are leaving WDW.

Even Southwest charges, starting with the third bag per passenger.

JetBlue allows each passenger one checked bag free, then charges $20 for the second.

All other airlines do charge most of us for even the first checked piece. Passengers in higher classes, and "best" customers, are often exempt. Those of us who pay as little as possible for the ticket get charged for checking luggage.

If you don't feel like transferring items to smaller bottles just set aside your regular products when they are nearing empty and then just discard the bottles when you are leaving WDW.
Applies to liquids being packed in checked luggage; carry-on liquids/pastes/gels must be in containers 3.4 ounces or smaller. One ounce of shampoo left in a seven ounce bottle? TSA will - or should, if they're paying attention - confiscate and toss it.

Oh my gosh, I am so glad I asked my questions here.
I knew I could get the best advice.
I am most likely flying out of Midway.
I'm still nervous about flying but I figure I only live once and we can't handle the 18 drive back and forth anymore.
Thanks!

Take lots of zip-loc bags - quart and gallon sizes are the best. Any liquids to go in your checked bags should be in a zip-loc. And items like underwear and socks that it doesn't matter if they wrinkle you can put in the gallon size and squish the air out - saves lots of space. Then re-use the bags for dirty clothes.

Another suggestion which I am taking from a friend of mine is, and this depends on how picky you are. Use the H2O products disney provides in your room. All I'm taking is sunscreen, toothpaste and deodorant. That way you have more room and don't have to deal with much at security. You can also go to about any retail store and buy a kit which has a heavy duty quart size ziploc bag and empty bottles. When in Sept are you going? I will be there 9/8-9/12. By the way if you are really afraid of flying and start have anxiety don't be afraid to call you dr. I'm not afraid but have bad anxiety over it. My dr perscribes Xanax, works wonders. .:grouphug::cheer2:

DO NOT PACK ANY VALUABLES IN YOUR CHECKED LUGGAGE!!! If you ever want to see your valuables carry them on. Lots of stuff is stolen from checked luggage.

A lot of great advice has already been posted!! :thumbsup2

I am not the best flier but would rather fly than drive from Chicago any day! Bring headphones, a book, cards, puzzles, etc. that will keep you occupied.

The noises you hear on the plane are normal...I need to take my own advice still! :lmao:

Wear socks to the airport. You are required to take your shoes off for screening and you will not want to be walking around the airport floor (even in it is for a few seconds) in your bare feet!

Good luck! We will be there in Sept. to, but flying out of O'Hare!
