Well just back from 5 nights at the lovely grounds of OKW. I'll give generics first about the trip then specifics on the resort.

First on the week in general:
Arrived Sunday May 30 around 1:30pm, got stuff from online check-in (which we love!), dropped stuff in our room, then headed to MK. Crowds were swelled (somewhat) but manageable that day and on Monday Mem. Day at AK. Rest of the week was easy going for crowds, did all of DHS in 1 day with only 1 FP (which was for TSM but we really didn't need it) and spread Epcot and MK over 2 days. DTD was pleasant by night as usual, otherwise a great visit to our "Home Away from the Other Place We Live!"

On OKW:

The Good:
1) Grounds are beautiful, nice easy-going feel to the whole place. Although some spots are remote, the resort still managed to have an intimate feel to it--I think the landscaping helps that.
2) Rooms are spacious, and we liked the layouts of the rooms.
3) Location is pretty central to everything else in the world, bus rides not too long to any one place.
4) Bus service was spot on, waited max 20 mins. only once.
5) Community Hall rocks--practice makes perfect I suppose!
6) Main pool and slide (best slide award!) are great!
7) I liked being able to park near my room (as the primary packer)!

What we didn't care for:
1) Missed not having a grab-n-go for bakery goods, were on QSDDP so missed being able to use our snacks for what we're used to at BF.
2) QS option at resort limited on entrees.
3) Took the boat from DTD near Rainforest to the resort, didn't realize had to change boats--just take the bus.
4) Beds were super firm for my ailing back (just preference--I don't expect Disney to cater to the millions of different backs they host).
5) Laundry room for studio folk at HH pool is small. Even my small DW had trouble manuevering in there. We usually do 1BRs but this was a last minute trip.

What we learned:
1) We are "hotel-style" accomodation folks, plain and simple. Prefer the air-conditioned hallways connected to amenities, so OKW will be an every-once-in-a-while for us.
2) We understand why people love this place, the grounds and atmosphere screams laid back and I'll get 'round to it later.

Summing it up:
OKW is a great resort and we know why the faithful return there, but we're not in that number. Now, OKWers don't flame me, it just isn't for us like VWL didn't feel right for us. Of course take into account that DW got SPOILED for BLT in Feb.!!! OKW reminds me of the CBR with toned down colors and less dining options. If I could take those room layouts with me I could. The resort was great (construction was a bummer), but just not our diggs, that's all.

Now let me add on the details from the worst week of my life at Disney--ever! Grab the popcorn::

1) Lost my 3yo son in the bathroom at AK in Dinoland--talk about heart attack! He pottied, then daddy's turn, and he took off. Fortunately he went straight to DW outside (without my knowledge) so my worst fears were averted. Needless to say--the longest 90 seconds of my entire life! :scared1:

2) Lost my camera charger 2 weeks before the trip, so borrowed my DM's for Disney--and broke the LCD screen in line for SE getting caught on the queue line railings--and the camera had no manual view-finder, so we kept snapping hoping for the best--bought her replacement Monday. :sad2:

3) Spilled food on myself 3 times--:headache:

4) The Best of the Best--With 2 perennially ruptured discs in my lower back, of course, I fall down the steps at OKW on check out day!!!! My fault, carrying things to pack and was blind to anything beneath my waist, of course had rained the entire night before, and I missed the bottom step thinking I was already on it. I lurched forward (luckily) dropping all the gear in my hands on the wet ground and threw my back out again (but not as bad as I'm proned to)!!!

Thanks for the honest review of OKW Shawn!

Sorry to hear about the bad parts of your week though. We lost one during our trip too. We left as you were arriving. Just missed each other.

Just a question....I've never been on any dining plan, but couldn't you use Goods To Go or the food options in the gift shop ? Just curious for future reference should I ever decide to do the QSDDP. thanks

So so sorry about the mishaps !!! Glad your son was found and so sorry about the fall. Hope you're feeling ok. Thanks so much for the TR.

I stayed at OKW last Halloween, I loved it. We had a 2 bedroom and 1 bedroom next to each other and it was perfect. We had the dining plan, but my neice made planned all the food stops.
Enjoy

Arrived Sunday May 30 around 1:30pm

We were at OKW 5/25-5/30 so we probably passed you Sunday morning! You were arriving while we were on our way back to south Mississippi. I agree with you about the extra firm beds. I wonder what the refurbished beds will be like? Sorry OKW wasn't exactly to your liking. We like the laid back atmosphere so our stay at AKV/BWV after Thanksgiving will be a new experience for us.

Here is the link to my trip report with some pics of OKW (and many others!) if anyone is interested...

We are here now for our first stay and totally love OKW.
I agree with your good/not so good list. I did have enough room in the laundry at the Turtle Pool.
I see why so many love this place--it is beautiful, relaxing, and just a short ride to all the parks.
Hope your back heals quickly and glad it happened your last day and not your first.

We're used to having selections of croissants, bagels, cinnamon rolls/buns, danish, fruits, cereals, etc. at other locations--these usually use up 1 snack each-as each person gets 2 snacks per night that works out great having mugs! That leaves the other snack to use in the parks.

We were at OKW 5/30-6/6! I'm going to post a trip report once all my pictures(over 500) finish uploading!

If you noticed a 30-something couple(big guy, smaller wife with curly blonde hair) and a 10 year old boy and a 5 yo girl that was us!:rotfl:

Thanks for the trip report, sorry about the fall! Better to happen at the end than at the beginning of your vacation. I prefer OKW but in the end I enjoy all of the DVC resorts for one reason or another. That's the beauty of DVC, even if you can't get your favorite resort, your trip won't be ruined by the resort you may have to settle for! I just returned from SSR because I could not get OKW and we had a marvelous time, even having to walk all the way down 3 corridors!
