We are taking our first so-cal trip next summer. There will be 6 of us, and we could do 2 rooms, but would prefer one. I think we're going to stay in GCA at Disneyland, but then we want to spend a few days in San Diego. Where would you stay?

We're planning on Sea World and San Diego Zoo or Wild Animal Park (maybe both). The Old Town Mariot was my first choice, but some reviews give me pause. Where would you stay? We won't have a car, so shuttles (free?) would be helpful. Walking distance to food would be nice (or food on site). Nice pool(s) at the hotel are desired also. Hotel should be up-to-date, not too old.

Thanks in advance for any help!

Hi Dan, I am responding mostly because no one else did. But not sure I can help. This summer we stayed at a beach house for three days in Mission Bay a few minutes from SW. We had seven people. No pool. Only the ocean. Did not do the Zoo. We used to be AP holders at the zoo when we lived in SD. We went to Mission Beach one day.

If you are interested in a beach house option I can give you info there. I just do not stay in hotels in SD so cannot tell you anything more than what you might find from tripadvisor.

Good luck. :)

I live in SD, therefore, have not stayed in many hotels here. But I would advise you to go on Trip Advisor. They rank hotels in any area based on customer reviews. They also show amenities and ratings for different sizes/types of families.
Old Town is not in walking distance of very much of SD, only a lot of Mexican food places (which are good!). There is a trolley system throughout the downtown area to access food places/entertainment (does not go to Sea World or Zoo). Buses go to both, however.
My parents stayed in a nice hotel with a nice pool and food on-site by the SeaWorld area. I can't remember the name, but there are only a few over there. Google it??
Sorry I cannot be of more help.

Thank You both! I may be interested in the beach house "Hydro guy". I'll let you know as we plan.

Again, thank you both for your time on these boards.

We had a really nice stay at the Omni in January and would recommend it. Was close to lots of restaurants and not far from the middle of the city.

We are going to stay at the Catamaran Resort next week. I will let you know what we thought of it when we get back, but I had also gotten two favorable reviews for the resort on another thread.

Two years ago, we stayed at the Bahia. It was kind of run down and dated, but a fantastic location. We were able to walk out the back door of our suite and go to the bay. We had 2 dble beds and a pull-out couch with a full kitchen.

I have never stayed at but have visited many times at the Hotel del Coronado. If you have the money, this is the place to be! Fantastic location and glorious facilities. Anything else on Coronado would be a great spot. There are a couple of chains like Marriott and/or Hilton there as well, but they did not accomodate our family of 5 economically, so I looked elsewhere.

The Comfort Inn has really great rates near Sea World. There are two locations, one right on the interstate and one ever so slightly off. Both get mixed reviews on Trip Advisor, but they have some amazing specials.

The other place that we were looking at staying was the Embassy Suites in La Jolla. There is no view from this location, but La Jolla is a really great area to be.

Hope this helps, and I will let you know about the Catamaran!
