DH left tonight for an RV convention in Louisville...for the next 3-4 days they are forcasting highs in the 20's. Our house has a woodfired/oil back up forced hot air furnace. We normally just use wood, and when the stove reaches a certain temperature, the blower kicks on, and the heat is sent through the house...well, USUALLY!
DH left, about 4:30, I had to run some errands with DD's, and I loaded up the stove, about 1/2 way at 5pm when we left...my plan was to have the stove ready to be loaded for the night about 10pm...this would give the 5pm wood ample time to burn..HA!
I come home about 645, and the house is "cool"...I look at the thermostat, 72'...yup- thats cool here. With this heat set up- our house is normally close to 80' all winter. The size of this system is big enough for a 2 story, 3000 sq foot house...our house is a 1 story 3 bedroom ranch..1300 sq feet...
I run downstairs to check the stove...I hear some hissin...yup- green wood...#$$#%@ it!...I open the drawer, to assit in the air circulation..it starts flaming..good..
Get the kids to bed, after the "i miss my daddy" routine, pick up the living room, and put the dishes away, and realize I had not heard the stove "Kick on" yet...back down stairs..woods burning, what the heck can be the problem.
I open up the door, flames, I push the "override" button on the blower, yup- kicks on...I pull the button, as your not suppose to run it that way...
I throw a piece of birch in, that stuff burns NICE....swap the laundry, come back up here...
1/2 hour passes-still no "kick on"...run back down stairs ( I think I burned about 5000 calories)...NOTHING...woods still burning, but no blower..
Without the blower, the heat is only what rises, and since it cant really go THROUGH the floors, well, you get the idea.
I walk over the the thermostat, its now at 68...HOLY MOLY THATS COLD.....back downstairs, open the drawer again, flames are shootin, fires crackin, all is well.....well until that stupid blower doesnt kick yet.
I decide to leave it as is...I have set the thermostat for the furnace to come on if it gets to 67....
You know the worst part is that if DH was here, he could have that stupid thing kicked on in about 2 minutes.
I can't wait for him to call so I can tell him how much I HATE this wood furnace!
then he'll remind me I like it in the morning when I step onto the hardwood floors, and they are WARM..
