when you decide how to save some money make sure to sock it away. if you are in the circumstance wherein you have to sign a lease for your apartment remember that if for some reason your income stops or drops you will still have to pay for the entire duration of the lease (even if you choose to move out).
also on shopping/cooking-don't know what your background is, but i learned to shop and cook from mom (who cooked for a family of 6). i had to learn how to cook in smaller amounts, and buy (perishables) in smaller amounts to prevent waste.
when looking for an apartment (aside from the common safety issues) remember to take into consideration the location and set up of the apartment and it's surroundings/amenities. while i feel safer on the 2nd floor of a 2 story apartment, i would have to balance it out against hauling groceries up and laundry down the stairs. one location may look great, but it may entail a long walk in rain/snow to the parking area. and check with your car insurance agent-a move to an apartment complex can result in higher rates (due to greater instance of car breakins) and a move from one area within a city to another can result in increases as well (dependant on crime).
