1st (and likely only) DLR trip....skipping WoC?

I haven't seen the new "Celebrate" version yet, but I have seen the original. We did the Ariel's Grotto dining package. We were right in the front at the railing. It was awesome.

I wouldn't miss it if I were you, since you say this may be your only trip to DLR. I plan on doing a dining package again in October. Not sure which restaurant, though.
 
Your kids will have the best shot seeing if you can find a spot with a hedge/railing in front of it, even near the back (like the fire hydrant spot mentioned).

I would say that WoC is the most unique of the nighttime shows for Disneyland and might be worth it for that. You do need a FP or dining package, but you don't have to show up painfully early.

I haven't read all the responses, but here's my take. WoC isn't that spectacular. Yeah, it's kind of cool. If you get a good spot, it is pretty beautiful. But, it's not spectacular. Skip it. You aren't missing anything.
