How old was your DD when you got her first AG doll? Not the Bitty Baby.
My DD is going on 6 and I was thinking for her 6th birthday I might... I know the suggested age is 8.

:santa: Santa is bringing our DD6 her first AG~Julie doll for Christmas. I think she is responsible enough to take care of her, she loves her babies...she tells me all the time "your holding her wrong"....like I have never held a baby before:rotfl2:

My dd just turned 7 and she is getting Emily for Christmas. She has wanted one for quite a while, but I just didn't think she was ready to keep track of all the accessories etc. I think she is now almost ready to be responsible for taking care of her doll and making sure everything is put away properly. I think you should decide if your dd is ready to take care of an expensive doll and let that be your guide.

My DD turned 6 this summer and got a Just Like Me doll. She loves her and takes good care of her. For Christmas she is getting Kit (thanks to Nana and Papa.) I think 6 is a great age as long as she takes good care of her toys.

DD7 received hers for her 7th birthday. I think that the others are correct in saying that it depends on the responsibility of the child. In addition, I think that there is another reason to wait. The AG dolls help girls learn about history. I suppose that they can get the doll now and learn later, but for me, this is a huge attraction of the dolls and why I don't mind them so much despite the price. DD7 was able to read the book that came with her doll and made references to the time period when we talked about other things.

My dd turned 6 this past September and she is getting her first AG doll this Christmas. She is pretty mature and responsible with her things and she understands that these dolls cost a lot of money. I can't wait to give it to her. They are really nice quality.

My older 2 girls are 6 and 5..they each have one ( Just like you and Emily) They take very good care of them...thats why they are each getting 2 more for Christmas (one from Santa and one from Grandma :))

My DD got the Just Like Me doll for her 6th birthday. She is great at taking care of her and keeping track of all her things. She does want one of the historical dolls, and I told her for her 7th birthday. I thought she would be able to relate to the history aspect better. However, I think Grandma is getting her one!

My DD got her first AG doll when she was 4, she has looked after her really well, and absolutely adores her. She loves the stories and although they are a little difficult for her to read by herself, we read them together at bedtime. She is now 6 and for every birthday and Christmas since then she has gotten more dolls, she has a just like you doll, a bitty baby, Kit, Felicity, Molly, Emily, and is getting Elizabeth and Josefina this year. I did buy the Julie offer, but I am going to put her away for DD's birthday.
I know the recommended age for AG's is 8, but I knew my DD would look after hers, so I don't see the problem with getting them when they are still young, besides, I think you get more value for money if they get them younger as they have more years to play with them. Sadly girls are growing up so fast now, they barely reach 11/12 before they stop playing with their dolls. Here in the UK, kids start high school at 11, so it isn't cool to play with dolls :o(

Hope you have a happy Christmas and New year everyone :grouphug:

We are lucky enough to live close enough to the American Girl Place in Chicago, to go there in the summer, so my DD got to see the AG show, and she wanted the book with the pictures of the show. We also bought the soundtrack and listened to it many many times! Now she understands an overview of the historical dolls and decided that she wants Kit for Christmas.

DD was 6 when she got her first AG doll(Samantha). She had the Bitty Baby first at 5 to test her on how well she would take care of it. She did great, but I was still worried about her taking care of a doll with real hair. She is almost 10 now and has a bunch of AG dolls and the Bitty twins and takes such good care of them and plays with them all the time. We are also lucky to live close to an AG store and love shopping in there! We all tease DH and say he turns into a little girl when he's in there! He wants to buy DD everything!LOL One time I sent him there(he works in the area)to pick up the AG NYC outfit because DD was taking her JLM doll with us to WDW. Well he came home with the outfit, PJ's, and the Nicki doll!!!:scared1: He now has a personal shopper there for all his orders!!LOL:lmao: I love it too and just love the quality of everything.

My 4 & 6 year olds are getting their 1st, and 2nd, AG dolls for Christmas this year, they both have the My Disney Girl and other dolls, Baby Annabelle and some less expensive dolls, that they take good care of and play with all the time. You know your child best.

What reading level to they consider the historical books?
I got Kirsten back before Felicity came out. Then when Felicity came out we HAD to go to Williamsburg for her big intro party and then I got one of those first ones. lol. They are still at my mom's house. I really need to get them. lol. I want to get a nice curio cabinet for them first.
I really do want to get my dd Kit for her 6th Birthday in May. I think she could handle it. Then again, if I buy it and before I give it to her and decide she's not ready, I can hold it for later.

My DD8 is getting her first AG-Nikki this year for Christmas. We wanted to wait until she was ready to take care and really appreciate such a doll. We are soo excited to give her one as she is really into reading this year.

My oldest is 6 (will be 7 in April). She got a Bitty baby for her 3rd birthday and I've been amazed how well she's taken care of it. We have every sock, shoe, pair of tights, book, bitty bear accessory, etc. that she's gotten over the years. Last Christmas she got the Bitty Twins (brunette girls) and has loved them just as much.

This year, I've been SO excited to get her a historical doll. I finally decided on Kit - ordered her and a couple of outfits with the free shipping code. The day I ordered, she started saying how she wanted the blonde twins, a boy & a girl. I asked if she really needed 5 bitty babies, and wouldn't she rather have one of the bigger dolls? Nope, still the bitty babies. My mom talked to her later and again she said that maybe she'd like an AG doll when she's older but she still wants Bitty Babies for now. UGH!

So, grandma bought her the blonde twins, and I have her birthday already taken care of - LOL! :thumbsup2 I had actually thought about taking her to Chicago to the AG store for her 7th birthday. Maybe we'll do that for her 8th instead. After the Kit movie comes out this summer I'm sure she'll love her.

My 3 yr old is getting a Bitty Baby for Christmas as well - however, she'll probably be the one to draw on her face with a Sharpie and cut her leg off just to see what's inside.

I guess we're a little overzealous - we've been getting the yearly ones (I forget the exact term) since she was born. She has 2 now. She is getting Bitty Babies for Christmas. She'll be 3 in January.

We're actually debating this right now. DD will turn 6 in January, and we are thinking of taking her into NYC to do a full day (tea, show, photo shoot) at the AG Doll Place and pick out her first doll. She pores over the catalogs, and she loves them all! I know she likes Samantha, Nellie, Felicity, and Elizabeth the best. She has seen all 3 of the movies, and we have read all of the Samantha books. I already got her the Feicity books for Christmas when they were on sale on the AG.

We're definitely doing this - just trying to decide if it should be for her 6th bday or her 7th....
