Sunday 24th October 2010

Another early start today as we were going to Animal Kingdom.

We set off in our two separate cars, choosing different routes.

Unfortunately, our favoured route taking the “short cut” up Sherbeth Road somehow led us to what appeared to be the staff entrance to the park. Not sure how we managed that! We quickly u-turned and found the correct road, but were a bit late getting to the park.

The others had gone ahead and were already queuing at Expedition Everest, then going to Kilimanjaro Safaris.

Mandy got some good animal photos.

We caught up with them, having first done Everest ourselves, and managed to get most of the rides done in the morning.

A day at a theme park is not complete without a soaking, this time on Kali River Rapids.

We had a lovely lunch at Yak and Yeti Counter service. Honey chicken with rice and orange beef with rice, and half the price of going inside (we were a bit mindful of how we were spending our money this trip, having lost some of our holiday money in the Crown Currency fiasco). Maddie went with Andrew and Kieran to Restaurantasauras for lunch for burgers and fries (of course) and finally got a Disney cookie that she had been looking forward to.

It was even hotter today, temperatures almost hitting the record for October. We had had absolutely perfect weather so far; wonderful clear blue skies and no rain at all.

We stopped for Mickey ice-creams.

Love this ride. Scary and fun at the same time. It reminds me of riding the very rickety Wild Mouse ride at Hayling Island in my childhood.

Andrew won a bat! Kieran also won one after several extra goes given to him by the kind CM.

Peter and Andrew went off to do Everest again, while the rest of us caught the train to Rafiki’s Planet Watch, a place we haven’t been to for many years. We patted a few goats in affection section, and listened to the sounds of the rainforest which was very effective as you are sitting in a completely dark, quiet little room with headphones on. Kieran tickled Mandy’s neck in the dark and made her shriek.

The park was strangely inefficient today though; some rides had really long wait times and others were walk-ons. We had a fast pass for Kilimanjaro Safaris and still waited 35 minutes! Most of the trucks had been taken off, apparently.

We got off the safari ride with half a minute to spare before the parade started.

We left the park around 4.30, having seen everything we wanted to see. We waited ages in the hot sun for a tram back to the parking lot though. Somehow, the park did not seem as well-organised as usual.

We headed back to the villa, Mandy coming in our car so we could stop at The Loop for a teeny bit more shopping! We just went in Michaels for a few things.

Back at the villa, we showered and changed and went out to Applebees for dinner.

We really enjoyed it. I had a huge melon and kiwi sangria which was lovely and refreshing. Looks like I've ha a few already in this picture.

Tony and I shared our favourite appetiser, the spinach and artichoke dip with tortillas, which we had last year. Our steaks were good too, with delicious creamy mash. Maddie, of course, had a burger! I can’t recall what the others had, though I’m pretty sure Kieran would have pleaded to have a burger again, followed by the chocolate cake dessert, being addicted to both! The desserts were delicious. Tony and I shared the Maple Syrup Blondie Skillet, which was a huge maple and pecan sponge cake served warm on a skillet and covered with ice-cream and maple syrup sauce and sugared pecans. Melt-in-the mouth deliciousness. We tucked in far too quickly to take any photos, unfortunately.

Back at the villa, we relaxed for a while watching American football and playing pass-the-pigs, a strange-but-fun game of Kierans, involving throwing little plastic pigs onto the table to see what positions they fall in! The stranger the position, the more points you get!

Tomorrow: Mall at Millenia and The Cheesecake factory.

That photo of Mandy and Kieran with Jiminy Cricket is a nearly unique souvenir, isn't it? I've never seen Jiminy in a park and in fact don't think I've ever even seen a photo of him in a trip report. Only know he's alive and well and somewhere out there from postcards and books about Disneyland/World. You get extra points for that picture.

lovely dayand lots of rides too. I have never been to Applebees but it sounds fab, it's now on the list.:goodvibes

A fun day at Animal Kingdom, and lovely pics too. I like the look of that melon and kiwi sangria drink ;)

love the look of your drink

We've not seen him before either, Susan. He was at Conservation Station.

I love pass the pigs!

I hadn't heard of it before. It's strangely addictive.

Girls, that sangria was delish. I love the flavour of melon.

I'm desperate to get a photo with Jiminy!! Apparently he's out quite often at Disneyland Paris but I've never been lucky enough to see him. :(

Pass the Pigs brings back some childhood memories ~ family friends had it and always used to get it out when we visited.

ETA: Forgot to say ~ love the bug glasses! :rotfl:

Wow! And then wow! again! Those animal shots are just stupendous. Mandy's missed her calling in life (unless she's a photographer, of course :rotfl:). Actually, all today's photos are great - this report has really captured the feel of a day at AK.

Have the staff at Michael's started inviting you to their homes for dinner, yet? :rotfl2:

The kiwi sangria looks scrummy. Tell me, why have we never played the pigs game with you? :teeth:
