Back in 1975, The Magic Kingdom was the only Disney Park, and we spent three days there. We also spent a day visiting Kennedy Space Center, and a day driving up to Yogi Bear’s home Jellystone Park. Our mum’s friend’s Ralph and Thelma drove us in their car along with their two boys David and Mark. All eight of us easily fitted into their huge car. There were two long bench seats in the car and so much room! We had only ever seen cars like that on the TV.
We stopped at some orange groves on the way. The whole Orlando area was surrounded by groves back then and orange sellers were everywhere. We were ridiculously excited to see real oranges growing!
I'm not sure which one of us this is:
Here we are at Jellystone Park with Mark and David.
And in a wagon
I had considered re-visiting Jellystone on this trip, but it’s quite a long way out of Orlando, much further than I remembered, so we shelved that idea due to lack of time.
We only have one single photo of Kennedy Space Center from 1975:
No-one wanted to re-visit this time as we have all done it on past holidays.
Today, we had decided to go to Blizzard Beach and arrived at around 10.30 and grabbed ourselves some loungers in the partial shade around the lagoon. It was promising to be a very hot day again. We did a slide or two, though not many, and spent most of the morning restfully bobbing about in the lazy river. Kieran found a friend and spent most of his time in the ski patrol area. Mandy and I went over there to try and get some photos, but we couldn’t find him. Mindful of the time wasted on our last trip to a water park, we gave up and went back to the lazy river.
We had taken an assortment of snacks with us – crisps, Doritos, mint oreo cookies, peanut butter crackers, all the bits and bobs left over from the last two weeks, and bought a portion of chicken tenders and fries to share for lunch. No pulled-pork sandwiches this time!
We left around 4pm and Tony and I headed to Downtown Disney while the others went to hunt out some sports shops.
Sports Dominator:
At Downtown, we bought a few things in World of Disney including a nice character pen, a photo frame for the Dis photo comp prize and a Mickey-shaped pancake/egg mould. We also found a little glass Tinkerbell ornament for Maddie from Arribas Brothers to add to her collection and popped into Ghirardelli’s for some peppermint bark to take home.
We bumped into Mandy and Peter who had a couple of hours to themselves while the boys went into Disneyquest.
From Downtown, Tony and I drove to Marshalls as we were trying to get a few things for Cal for Christmas, and then to Walgreens as I wanted some headache sticks to take home. While we were in there we took advantage of a special offer on Reeces Fast Breaks and Paydays and bought a huge bagful to bring home. Sadly, they have long since been eaten. Luckily though, The American Candy Co is just a 15 minutes drive from our house, so I can see a visit happening in the near future.
We came back to the villa and started to pack our second suitcase as we needed to see if there was room for any more food to take home. It’s very important to use every sliver of space and every ounce of weight allowance. To our joy, there was still room for more! Walmart tomorrow, then.
We went out and met the others at Smokey Bones for dinner. We all enjoyed our meal. The ribs were good and the “sides” were really delicious – fire-cooked corn and creamy mash/loaded jackets. We all had desserts too. Kieran and I had scrumptious 7 layer chocolate cake again (one each, obviously) though we would have preferred it warm not cold. The nice server said he could warm them up for us, but we couldn’t wait for that!
Someone had a delicious apple pie, or it may have been apple cheesecake:
We returned to the villa, had a glass of wine, packed a bit more and watched some football on the TV before going to bed, sad that tomorrow would be our last whole day.
Tomorrow: Magic Kingdom, Shopping, and a Halloweeny time at Celebration.
